Download or read book Brahms and the Scherzo written by Ryan McClelland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the incredible diversity in Brahms's scherzo-type movements, there has been no comprehensive consideration of this aspect of his oeuvre. Professor Ryan McClelland provides an in-depth study of these movements that also contributes significantly to an understanding of Brahms's compositional language and his creative dialogue with musical traditions. McClelland especially highlights the role of rhythmic-metric design in Brahms's music and its relationship to expressive meaning. In Brahms's scherzo-type movements, McClelland traces transformations of primary thematic material, demonstrating how the relationship of the initial music to its subsequent versions creates a musical narrative that provides structural coherence and generates expressive meaning. McClelland's interpretations of the expressive implications of Brahms's fascinatingly intricate musical structures frequently engage issues directly relevant to performance. This illuminating book will appeal to music theorists, musicologists working on nineteenth-century instrumental music and performers.

Download or read book Varieties of Musical Irony written by Michael Cherlin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irony, one of the most basic, pervasive, and variegated of rhetorical tropes, is as fundamental to musical thought as it is to poetry, prose, and spoken language. In this wide-ranging study of musical irony, Michael Cherlin draws upon the rich history of irony as developed by rhetoricians, philosophers, literary scholars, poets, and novelists. With occasional reflections on film music and other contemporary works, the principal focus of the book is classical music, both instrumental and vocal, ranging from Mozart to Mahler. The result is a surprising array of approaches toward the making and interpretation of irony in music. Including nearly ninety musical examples, the book is clearly structured and engagingly written. This interdisciplinary volume will appeal to those interested in the relationship between music and literature as well as to scholars of musical composition, technique, and style.

Book Molecules Into Materials

Download or read book Molecules Into Materials written by Peter Day and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2007 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decade has seen the emergence and explosive growth of a new field of condensed matter science: materials chemistry. Transcending the traditional boundaries of organic, inorganic and physical chemistry, this new approach aims to create new molecular and lattice ensembles with unusual physical properties. One of its pioneers, the author has worked on structure-property relations in the inorganic and metal-organic solid state for over 40 years. His seminal work on mixed-valency compounds and inorganic charge transfer spectra in the 1960s set the scene for this new type of chemistry, and his discovery of transparent metal-organic ferromagnets in the 1970s laid the ground rules for much current work on molecular magnets. He has also published extensively on molecular metals and superconductors, especially on charge transfer salts combining conductivity with magnetism. This indispensable volume brings together for the first time a selection of his articles on all these topics, grouped according to theme. Each group is prefaced by a brief introduction for the general reader, putting the articles into their context in the evolution of the subject and describing the intellectual circumstances in which each project was conceived and executed.

Book Polymers Metal Compounds and New Materials

Download or read book Polymers Metal Compounds and New Materials written by Vasile Gutsanu and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-12-05 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the interaction of strongly basic anion exchangers with some metal cations. These polymers are a high tonnage production of the chemical industry, and are widely used in various chemical and technical operations, particularly in the treatment of water at thermal and atomic power stations. Their interaction with metal cations, especially with iron, an unpredictable and uncontrollable process, leads to their intoxication and rapid exhaustion. However, if the interaction of these polymers with cations is controlled, then in the polymer phase, ultra-fine particles of the compounds are formed, which radically change their physical and chemical properties. These composites become selective sorbents and catalysts with good hydro and aerodynamic properties to carry out processes in flow, an important factor in technology. This is demonstrated by patents on water purification from chromates, nitrate/nitrite, sulphides and air purification from iodine and hydrogen sulfide. The book also shows, for the first time, that cations Fe3+, Cr3+, Al3+, Ga3+, In3+, lanthanide (III) in the phase of strongly basic anion exchangers form compounds of the jarosite mineral type.
