Book excerpt: I didn’t know what I was doing in a bar at midnight. On a weeknight. Certainly not sleeping, even though I had to work the next day. Definitely not open to talking with anyone, or trying to pick up a date. Surely . . . not paying the least bit of attention to the beautiful bartender with gorgeous hazel eyes and a body built for sin. He’d flash a smile and the women around him melted. He’d chuckle and even I wasn’t immune to the silken way it slid down my spine. And I was singular. I didn’t pay attention to men (and yes, I said that as a filthy, four-letter word). I existed by myself. For myself. It was safer that way. Then . . . he talked to me. Then . . . he flashed that smile my way. Then he made me want a stranger more than I wanted my careful distance. Oh. Hell.

Book The Impossibility of Sex

Download or read book The Impossibility of Sex written by Susie Orbach and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book I have struggled with certain words without a satisfactory conclusion. I am unhappy about all the words used to describe the person who visits the therapist's consulting room. Is she or he a patient? Well, sometimes yes. Certain individuals like that word because it captures for them the sense that there is something wrong, an emotional illness. Is she or he a client? Again, sometimes yes. Certain individuals like that word because it connotes a kind of consultative process. Is she or he an analysand? Certain individuals like this word because it conveys something about the process of a therapy and it has a symmetry: analyst–analysand. I myself find that all these words capture something about the therapy and the therapy process but are considerably less than perfect. In what follows I have chosen to use the words interchangeably, as well as the words psychotherapist, therapist and analyst. In the text, in the musings in italics, I have usually referred to the primary carer in the person's early life as mother. I realize that this is not always the case. There are fathers who have primary responsibility for their children from birth and there are relatives and nannies who fulfil this role. Rarely in my clinical experience of seeing adults has this role been an enterprise between two people in the way that it is becoming for some couples with children today. We have yet to see the effects of joint child-rearing on adult psychologies so I have retained the notion of the mother or mother substitute, a notion which will have to be expanded as the generations now raising children make new arrangements between them. I have also chosen for simplicity's sake to use the word 'she' throughout for the personal pronoun rather than 'she or he'.

Book Secrets from the Cockpit

Download or read book Secrets from the Cockpit written by Robert Schapiro and published by Jonathan Ball Publishers. This book was released on 2021-06-18 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A witty, sometimes heart-stopping, and always engrossing path from "boy pilot" to elite aviator.' – Jaundiced Eye columnist, William Saunderson-Meyer Robert Schapiro always wanted to fly. Challenging anti-Semitic bullying, mockery and fierce rivalry, he realised his dream by earning his wings in the South African Air Force and going on to command C-47 Dakotas in the Border War. He joined South African Airways (SAA) in 1979, soon learning it was a time when SAA crews were dominated by the 'Royal Family' – captains who thought themselves above the rules and who spent time overseas on drinking binges or coaxing air hostesses to be their 'airline wives'. When sanctions forced SAA to cut back on its routes, he was seconded to Japan's Nippon Cargo Airlines, routinely flying between New York and Tokyo and grappling with often-hilarious cultural misunderstandings as he adapted to a Japanese style of operations. Schapiro is disarmingly frank about life as an international pilot. He divulges near misses, emergency landings, navigation errors, passenger shenanigans (seat sex, anyone?), how pilots control rowdy travellers and absorbing detail about the technique of flying different aircraft types. Uplifting and humorous, his memoir offers a rare slice of aviation history.

Book How Sex Got Screwed Up The Ghosts that Haunt Our Sexual Pleasure Book Two

Download or read book How Sex Got Screwed Up The Ghosts that Haunt Our Sexual Pleasure Book Two written by Jon Knowles and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2019-03-31 with total page 1034 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ghosts that haunt our sexual pleasure were born in the Stone Age. Sex and gender taboos were used by tribes to differentiate themselves from one another. These taboos filtered into the lives of Bronze and Iron Age men and women who lived in city-states and empires. For the early Christians, all sex play was turned into sin, instilled with guilt, and punished severely. With the invention of sin came the construction of women as subordinate beings to men. Despite the birth of romance in the late middle ages, Renaissance churches held inquisitions to seek out and destroy sex sinners, all of whom it saw as heretics. The Age of Reason saw the demise of these inquisitions. But, it was doctors who would take over the roles of priests and ministers as sex became defined by discourses of crime, degeneracy, and sickness. The middle of the 20th century saw these medical and religious teachings challenged for the first time as activists, such as Alfred Kinsey and Margaret Sanger, sought to carve out a place for sexual freedom in society. However, strong opposition to their beliefs and the growing exploitation of sex by the media at the close of the century would ultimately shape 21st century sexual ambivalence. Book Two of this two-part publication traces the history of sex from the Victorian Era to present day. Interspersed with ‘personal hauntings’ from his own life and the lives of friends and relatives, Knowles reveals how historical discourses of sex continue to haunt us today. This book is a page-turner in simple and plain language about ‘how sex got screwed up’ for millennia. For Knowles, if we know the history of sex, we can get over it.

Book Sex and God at Yale

Download or read book Sex and God at Yale written by Nathan Harden and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To glimpse America's future, one needs to look no further than its college campuses. Of those institutions, none holds more clout than Yale University, the hallowed "cradle of presidents." In Sex and God at Yale, recent graduate Nathan Harden undresses perversity among the Ivy and ideology gone wild as the upper echelon of academia is mired in nothing less than a full-fledged moral crisis. Three generations ago, William F. Buckley's classic God and Man at Yale, a critique of enforced liberalism at his alma mater, became a rallying cry of the conservative movement. Today Harden reveals how a loss of purpose, borne of extreme agendas and single-minded political correctness shielded under labels of "academic freedom," subverts the goals of higher education. Harden's provocative narrative highlights the implications of the controversial Sex Week on campus and the social elitism of the Yale "naked party" phenomenon. Going beyond mere sexual expose, Sex and God at Yale pulls the sheets off of institutional licentiousness and examines how his alma mater got to a point where: • During "Sex Week" at Yale, porn producers were allowed onto campus property to give demonstrations on sexual technique—and give out samples of their products. • An art student received departmental approval—before the ensuing media attention alerted the public and Yale alumni—for an art project in which she claimed to have used the blood and tissue from repeated self-induced miscarriages. • The university became the subject of a federal investigation for allegedly creating a hostile environment for women. Much more than this, Harden examines the inherent contradictions in the partisan politicizing of higher education. What does it say when Yale seeks to distance itself from its Divinity School roots while at the same time it hires a Muslim imam with no academic credentials to instruct students? When the same school that would not allow ROTC on its campus for decades invites a former Taliban spokesperson to study at the university? Or employs a professor who praised Hamas terrorists? As Harden asks: What sort of moral leadership can we expect from Yale's presidents and CEOs of tomorrow? Will the so-called "abortion artist" be leading the National Endowment for the Arts in twenty years? Will a future president be practicing moves he or she learned during Sex Week in the closet of the Oval Office? If tyrants tell little girls they aren't allowed to go to school, will an Ivy-educated Taliban emissary be the one to deliver the message? Sex and God at Yale is required reading for the parent of any college-bound student—and for anyone concerned about the direction of higher education in America and the implications it has for young students today and the leaders of tomorrow.
