Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Machines of Sex Research describes how researchers worldwide integrated technology into studies of human sexuality in the postwar era. The machines they invented made new ways of seeing bodies possible. Some researchers who studied men used machines like penile strain gauges to police “deviant” male sexuality; others used less painful devices like penis-cameras to study women’s sexual responses and map the physiology of their arousal and orgasm. While researchers used the findings from their technological innovations to propose their own views of how people should view their bodies and should manage their sexual lives, their readers interpreted their findings to enact their own visions of sexuality. Drucker shows how the use of machines in sex research provided some of the intellectual underpinnings of the sexual revolution and the women’s and gay rights movements, and in turn how the sex research community developed new machines for investigations that would enhance sexual happiness rather than constrict it. The Machines of Sex Research is a key read for those interested in the intersections between human sexuality, technology, and twentieth-century social movements. Describes the little-known history of the machines of human sex research in the postwar era Shows how researchers worldwide invented and used machines to study human sexuality and the body in new ways, and how they used and improved each other's designs Relates the relationship between the machines of sex research to Cold War sexualities and gender and sexual liberation movements.

Book Behind the Shock Machine

Download or read book Behind the Shock Machine written by Gina Perry and published by New Press, The. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When social psychologist Stanley Milgram invited volunteers to take part in an experiment at Yale in the summer of 1961, none of the participants could have foreseen the worldwide sensation that the published results would cause. Milgram reported that fully 65 percent of the volunteers had repeatedly administered electric shocks of increasing strength to a man they believed to be in severe pain, even suffering a life-threatening heart condition, simply because an authority figure had told them to do so. Such behavior was linked to atrocities committed by ordinary people under the Nazi regime and immediately gripped the public imagination. The experiments remain a source of controversy and fascination more than fifty years later. In Behind the Shock Machine, psychologist and author Gina Perry unearths for the first time the full story of this controversial experiment and its startling repercussions. Interviewing the original participants—many of whom remain haunted to this day about what they did—and delving deep into Milgram's personal archive, she pieces together a more complex picture and much more troubling picture of these experiments than was originally presented by Milgram. Uncovering the details of the experiments leads her to question the validity of that 65 percent statistic and the claims that it revealed something essential about human nature. Fleshed out with dramatic transcripts of the tests themselves, the book puts a human face on the unwitting people who faced the moral test of the shock machine and offers a gripping, unforgettable tale of one man's ambition and an experiment that defined a generation.

Book A Study of The Mating Behaviors between Humans Dragon Shifters

Download or read book A Study of The Mating Behaviors between Humans Dragon Shifters written by Dlenti O'Pick and published by Boruma Publishing. This book was released on 2021-10-26 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This experiment explores the potential coupling between non-shifter humans and Dragons Shifters. After rejecting ten prior participants, the Dragon Brood unexpectedly accepts both Subject Eleven and Subject Twelve. This is the first recorded study of the Dragon Shifters' mating behavior. Request to catalogue the various equipment, including, but not limited to, sounding rods of different sizes, assorted dildos and plugs, whips, clamps, sex machines, and bondage equipment, have been denied. Cassey knows what she's getting herself into and she's honored to be chosen by the Dragon Shifters, although being taken by a group of Dragon Shifters, even in their human forms, is really intimidating because of their large size and very sizable... packages, and that's before she realizes their penchant for bondage and perverse, insatiable appetite. Alana is only in it for the participation money, a sizable amount just to show up and be rejected. The last thing she expects is to be chosen, and then taken one after another - and at times, together - by the Dragon Shifters. They're all in way over their heads. ~~~~~ Excerpt ~~~~~ The stirrup beds are standard facility equipment. However, the sex machine and dildos or various shapes and sizes are certainly not provided by the research. Neither are the different sex toys, including, but not limited to, several sounding rods, nipple clamps, anal plugs, dildos of various sizes, whips, paddles, handcuffs, chains, and so on. Our request to have their sex toys itemized and photographed have been rejected. The objects are claimed to be completely sanitized and they are possessive of the items, refusing to let any of the team members get a good look. Additional notes have been made to include antibiotics and provide thorough cleaning of subjects after each session after samples have been taken. Once both subjects are stripped and placed on the beds, the team leave, and the Dragon Shifters enter the room. They begin by binding both subjects. They appear to be very adept at using these specialized sex tools, cuffing both subjects to the bed and using several lengths of material to wrap around their bodies to prevent them from falling from the bed if they were to struggle too hard. They also tested the strength of the beds and seem to be satisfied with it. Next, they begin preparing both subjects for penetration, coating their fingers with lube and lubricating both. The Dragon Shifters appear to do this in turns, and the sequence at which each Shifter gets a turn is noted, but there does not seem to be a specific chronology. The Dragon Shifters then roll up an alarmingly sized sex machine. It is noted that they had flown back to their nest and retrieved these equipment. Their full Dragon Shifts are as impressive as ever and their speed continues to defy the laws of physic. It is infuriating that they do not allow their flight speed to be studied. The jackasses.

Book Experimental

  • Author : Natalia Cecire
  • Publisher : JHU Press

  • ISBN : 1421433788
  • Pages : 318 pages

Download or read book Experimental written by Natalia Cecire and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2019-12-30 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling revision of the history of experimental writing from Pound and Stein to Language poetry, disclosing its uses and its limits. In this bold new study of twentieth-century American writing and poetics, Natalia Cecire argues that experimental writing should be understood as a historical phenomenon before it is understood as a set of formal phenomena. This seems counterintuitive because, at its most basic level, experimental writing can be thought of as writing which breaks from established forms. Touching on figures who are not typically considered experimental, such as Stephen Crane, Jacob Riis, Busby Berkeley, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Gottlob Frege, Experimental offers a fresh look at authors who are often treated as constituting a center or an origin point of an experimental literary tradition in the United States, including Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams, and Marianne Moore. In responding to a crisis of legitimization in the production of knowledge, this tradition borrows and transforms the language of the sciences. Drawing upon terminology from the history of science, Cecire invokes the epistemic virtue, which tethers ethical values to the production of knowledge in order to organize diverse turn-of-the-century knowledge practices feeding into "experimental writing." Using these epistemic virtues as a structuring concept for the book's argument, Cecire demonstrates that experimental writing as we now understand it does not do experiments (as in follow a method) but rather performs epistemic virtues. Experimental texts embody the epistemic virtues of flash, objectivity, precision, and contact, associated respectively with population sciences, neuroanatomy, natural history and toolmaking, and anthropology. Yet which virtues take precedence may vary widely, as may the literary forms through which they manifest. Bringing it up to the 1980s, Cecire reveals the American experimental literary tradition as a concerted and largely successful rewriting of twentieth-century literary history. She shows how the Language poets, a group of primarily white experimental writers, restored to the canon what they saw as modernism's true legacy, whose stakes were simultaneously political and epistemological: it produced a poet who was an intellectual and a text that was experimental.

Download or read book Groove Theory written by Tony Bolden and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2020-10-21 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tony Bolden presents an innovative history of funk music focused on the performers, regarding them as intellectuals who fashioned a new aesthetic. Utilizing musicology, literary studies, performance studies, and African American intellectual history, Bolden explores what it means for music, or any cultural artifact, to be funky. Multitudes of African American musicians and dancers created aesthetic frameworks with artistic principles and cultural politics that proved transformative. Bolden approaches the study of funk and black musicians by examining aesthetics, poetics, cultural history, and intellectual history. The study traces the concept of funk from early blues culture to a metamorphosis into a full-fledged artistic framework and a named musical genre in the 1970s, and thereby Bolden presents an alternative reading of the blues tradition. In part one of this two-part book, Bolden undertakes a theoretical examination of the development of funk and the historical conditions in which black artists reimagined their music. In part two, he provides historical and biographical studies of key funk artists, all of whom transfigured elements of blues tradition into new styles and visions. Funk artists, like their blues relatives, tended to contest and contextualize racialized notions of blackness, sexualized notions of gender, and bourgeois notions of artistic value. Funk artists displayed contempt for the status quo and conveyed alternative stylistic concepts and social perspectives through multimedia expression. Bolden argues that on this road to cultural recognition, funk accentuated many of the qualities of black expression that had been stigmatized throughout much of American history.

Book Combining Experimentation and Theory

Download or read book Combining Experimentation and Theory written by Enric Trillas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-13 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unexpected and premature passing away of Professor Ebrahim H. "Abe" Mamdani on January, 22, 2010, was a big shock to the scientific community, to all his friends and colleagues around the world, and to his close relatives. Professor Mamdani was a remarkable figure in the academic world, as he contributed to so many areas of science and technology. Of great relevance are his latest thoughts and ideas on the study of language and its handling by computers. The fuzzy logic community is particularly indebted to Abe Mamdani (1941-2010) who, in 1975, in his famous paper An Experiment in Linguistic Synthesis with a Fuzzy Logic Controller, jointly written with his student Sedrak Assilian, introduced the novel idea of fuzzy control. This was an elegant engineering approach to the modeling and control of complex processes for which mathematical models were unknown or too difficult to build, yet they could effectively and efficiently be controlled by human operators. This ground-breaking idea has found innumerable applications and can be considered as one of the main factors for the proliferation and adoption of fuzzy logic technology. Professor Mamdani's own life and vital experience are illustrative of his “never surrendering” attitude while facing adversaries, which is normal for a person proposing any novel solution, and represent a great example for everybody. His subtle sense of humor, his joy for life, and his will to critically help people, especially young people, were characteristics deeply appreciated by all the people who enjoyed and benefited from his friendship and advice. This book constitutes a posthumous homage to Abe Mamdani. It is a collection of original papers related in some way to his works, ideas and vision, and especially written by researchers directly acquainted with him or with his work. The underlying goal of this book will be fulfilled if, in the very spirit of Mamdani's legacy, the papers will trigger a scientific or philosophical debate on the issues covered, or contribute to a cross-fertilization of ideas in the various fields.

Download or read book Revolutionary Experiments written by Nikolai Krementsov and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2014 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Krementsov examines a particular fascination with the dream of immortality and the place of science and fiction in its pursuit in Russia during roughly a decade that followed the country's political revolutions of 1917. It argues that contemporary scientific experiments aimed at the control over life, death, and disease inspired many Russian writers to conduct their own literary experiments with the ideas and techniques offered by experimental biology and medicine, which found expression in both popular-science writings and a new literary genre, science fiction.
