Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dirty Words: The Rhetoric of Public Sex Education, 1870-1924, details the approaches and outcomes of sex-education initiatives in the Progressive Era. In analyzing the rhetorical strategies of sex education advocates, Robin E. Jensen engages with rich sources such as lectures, books, movies, and posters that were often shaped by female health advocates and instructors. She offers a revised narrative that demonstrates how women were both leaders and innovators in early U.S. sex-education movements, striving to provide education to underserved populations of women, minorities, and the working class. Investigating the communicative and rhetorical practices surrounding the emergence of public sex education in the United States, Jensen shows how women in particular struggled for a platform to create and circulate arguments concerning this controversial issue. The book also provides insight into overlooked discourses about public sex education by analyzing a previously understudied campaign targeted at African American men in the 1920s, offering theoretical categorizations of discursive strategies that citizens have used to discuss sex education over time, and laying out implications for health communicators and sexual educators in the present day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High Schools and Sex Education: A Manual of Suggestions on Education Related to Sex Whatever the reasons for the failure of so many homes in the past, we shall probably not bring up a generation of better home makers except through educational procedure directly bearing upon home making; and for any comprehensive and systematic educational work we must depend upon our schools and our teachers. That teachers are aware of a growing responsibility in this field is shown by the resolutions adopted by the National Education Association at its annual convention in Salt Lake City, July, 1920: As effective health education is essential to the conservation of the. Child, who is the most important asset Of the Nation, we favor definite plans for physical training to be carried on regularly in every school of the Nation; we indorse the making of good-health practices a part Of the daily life of the child; we recommend some such system as the modern health crusade as a part of an effective course of health education; we favor the teaching of social hygiene in all teacher-training institutions, and recommend the cooperation of teachers with all organizations of parents in the instruction necessary to the inculcation Of sound ideas and attitudes in children and youth. As to the essentials of social hygiene, we favor the establishment by the States and the Nation of definite standards and ideals of physical perfection of children of school age, to be placed before pupils and parents, and we advise the adoption of a plan of regular reports to parents of the physical standing of their children, to the end that every American child may build his life on a basis of sound physical health. Download or read book Teaching Sex written by Jeffrey P. Moran and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2002-10-15 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex education, since its advent at the dawn of the twentieth century, has provoked the hopes and fears of generations of parents, educators, politicians, and reformers. On its success or failure seems to hinge the moral fate of the nation and its future citizens. But whether we argue over condom distribution to teenagers or the use of an anti-abortion curriculum in high schools, we rarely question the basic premise--that adolescents need to be educated about sex. How did we come to expect the public schools to manage our children's sexuality? More important, what is it about the adolescent that arouses so much anxiety among adults? Teaching Sex travels back over the past century to trace the emergence of the sexual adolescent and the evolution of the schools' efforts to teach sex to this captive pupil. Jeffrey Moran takes us on a fascinating ride through America's sexual mores: from a time when young men were warned about the crippling effects of masturbation, to the belief that schools could and should train adolescents in proper courtship and parenting techniques, to the reemergence of sexual abstention brought by the AIDS crisis. We see how the political and moral anxieties of each era found their way into sex education curricula, reflecting the priorities of the elders more than the concerns of the young. Moran illuminates the aspirations and limits of sex education and the ability of public authority to shape private behavior. More than a critique of public health policy, Teaching Sex is a broad cultural inquiry into America's understanding of adolescence, sexual morality, and social reform.
