Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender Development is the first book to examine gender from a truly developmental perspective and fills a real need for a textbook and source book for college and graduate students, parents, teachers, researchers, and counsellors. It examines the processes involved in the development of gender, addressing such sensitive and complex questions as what causes males and females to be different and why they behave in different ways. The authors provide an up-to-date, integrative review of theory and research, tracing gender development from the moment of conception through adulthood and emphasising the complex interaction of biology, socialisation, and cognition. The topics covered include hormonal influences, moral development, play and friendships, experiences at school and work, and psychopathology.

This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescenceâ€"beginning with the onset of puberty and ending in the mid-20sâ€"is a critical period of development during which key areas of the brain mature and develop. These changes in brain structure, function, and connectivity mark adolescence as a period of opportunity to discover new vistas, to form relationships with peers and adults, and to explore one's developing identity. It is also a period of resilience that can ameliorate childhood setbacks and set the stage for a thriving trajectory over the life course. Because adolescents comprise nearly one-fourth of the entire U.S. population, the nation needs policies and practices that will better leverage these developmental opportunities to harness the promise of adolescenceâ€"rather than focusing myopically on containing its risks. This report examines the neurobiological and socio-behavioral science of adolescent development and outlines how this knowledge can be applied, both to promote adolescent well-being, resilience, and development, and to rectify structural barriers and inequalities in opportunity, enabling all adolescents to flourish.

Book Conceptual Social Cognitive and Contextual Issues in the Fields of Play

Download or read book Conceptual Social Cognitive and Contextual Issues in the Fields of Play written by Jaipaul L. Roopnarine and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2002 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research and theoretical contributions of international and multidisciplinary scholars have advanced our understanding of the role of play in evolution and behavior. The diverse articles in this volume range from theoretical and conceptual advances, scientific investigations, to discourse about applied issues and different dimensions of play. The authors provide excursions into the adaptive, cultural, and social significance of play. The databased papers fall into four categories: the role of age, gender, and ethnicity in play participation, social-cognitive connections to play, fighting and play fighting, and play and process in adulthood. Play is defined as behavior that is not necessary to survival and yet is undertaken voluntarily as a method by which to improve the quality of life. This study, addressing the definition, role, and characteristics of play, falls within the research of education, psychology, anthropology, sociology, leisure studies, and primatology. The play of humans and nonhumans takes a variety of forms and serves multiple purposes within mental and emotional states of being. The motivation and impact of play behavior varies with the type of play performed. The studies included in this volume address simple games, more complex creative activities, the emotional implications of play throughout adult life, and the role of play in human social construction.

Providing readers with the tools and understanding necessary to develop children’s spatial sense through the domains of mapping and architecture, this cutting-edge volume lays the groundwork for both cognitive development and early childhood specialists and educators to develop more robust models of STEAM-related curriculum that span the early years through to adolescence.

Book Children s Block Play with Their Parents

Download or read book Children s Block Play with Their Parents written by Eleni Zervas and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study examined the various constructions parents built with their sons and daughters using a set of LEGO blocks, in order to investigate whether parents encouraged block configurations appropriate to their child's sex. Parents' speech to their children during play was also investigated to examine whether any differences occurred as a result of parents' and children's sex, type of block play or an interaction of any of these three variables. Twenty-four children ranging in age from 60 to 83 months, and their parents participated in this study. Each parent was assigned the same task but was observed separately with their child. Every child was observed playing for 10 minutes with the father and for an additional 10 minutes with the mother. All observations took place in the family's home. Results indicated that (1) fathers, more than mothers made greater distinctions based on a child's sex, (2) children built more gender-typed block constructions with fathers, (3) mothers were significantly more talkative during play sessions than fathers, (4) children were more verbally interactive with mothers than fathers, (5) boys were more verbally interactive with mothers when the type of block play they engaged in together was appropriate to the mother's sex. Findings are discussed in reference to Social Learning Theory.
