Book excerpt: "Leaning into the Wind is a series of ten intimate essays in which Susan Allen Toth, who was spent most of her life in Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, reveals the ways in which weather has challenged and changed her perceptions about herself and the world around her. She describes her ever-growing awareness of and appreciation for how the weather marks the major milestones of her life. Toth explores issues as large as weather and spirituality in "Who Speaks in the Pillar of Cloud?" and topics as small as mosquito in "Things That Go Buzz in the Night." In "Storms," a severe thunderstorm becomes a continuing metaphor for the author's troubles first marriage. Two essays, one from late middle age, ponder how the weather seems different at various stages of life but always provides unexpected opportunities for self-discovery, change, and renewal."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Eric Meola became interested in storms during a 1977 road trip across Nevada to photograph an album cover for musician Bruce Springsteen. While driving on a long dirt road in the desert they encountered a violent storm, and Springsteen wrote a song about the experience called 'The Promised Land'. Meola was transfixed as well by the display of nature's fury: "I always wanted to go back to that day when we drove up on a hilltop and watched as lightning revealed the valley floor." Meola began to photograph the tornadic storms of the Great Plains - the area in America's heartland west of the 98th meridian and east of the Rockies. Driving through the area known as Tornado Alley - from the Rio Grande in southern Texas, north to the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan - he photographed a forbidding landscape where atmospheric instability collides with moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and spectacular cumulonimbus clouds form at twilight. Over a period of several years he documented a landscape of elemental forces, where immense storms percolate miles above the ground, rotating with energy until tornadoes spin on the horizon. And he discovered a country of haunting beauty where the wail of coyotes and the glow of constellations fill the prairie's void with simple graces. Fierce Beauty: Storms of the Great Plains includes more than one hundred photographs made during six seasons of tornadoes, lightning, dust storms, and storm phenomena, as well as a detailed and vivid description of a moment-by-moment close encounter with a cataclysmic tornado by renowned storm chaser and meteorologist William T. Reid. AUTHOR: Eric Meola studied photography at the Newhouse School of Journalism at Syracuse University, and graduated with a BA degree in English Literature. Meola's photographs are included in the archive of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP), the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC, the International Center of Photography in New York City, and the George Eastman Museum in Rochester, New York. His previous books include Born to Run: The Unseen Photos (Insight Editions, 2006), and INDIA: In Word & Image (Welcome Books, 2008). He has won numerous awards, including the 'Advertising Photographer of the Year' award in 1986 from the American Society of Media Photographers. In 2014, he received the 'Power of the Image' George Eastman award as part of ceremonies and an exhibition in Beijing, China. Eric and his wife, photographer Joanna McCarthy, live in Sagaponack, New York, on the south shore of Long Island. SELLING POINTS: * Features more than 100 detailed and atmospheric photographs of tornadoes, lightning, dust storms, and storm phenomena taken during four decades of personal trips to the Great Plains and during six seasons of chasing storms, from 1977 to 2019 * Chronicles Eric Meola's initiation into storm chasing during a trip to Nevada with Bruce Springsteen in the late 1970s to make photographs that eventually would be used on Springsteen's album The Promise, and which he documented in the song 'The Promised Land' * Features several extracts of storm-chasing experiences by renowned storm chasers and meteorologists, such as Charles Chuck Doswell III, Chris Gullikson, and William T. Book An Introduction to Severe Storms and Hazardous Weather

Download or read book An Introduction to Severe Storms and Hazardous Weather written by Jeffrey B. Halverson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 805 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a deep and encompassing survey of severe weather in all its forms. An Introduction to Severe Storms and Hazardous Weather is an exciting new textbook that allows students to learn the principles of atmospheric science through the drama, exhilaration, and even tragedy of severe weather. Balancing breadth and depth, Jeffrey B. Halverson adeptly combines a short, accessible introduction to the basic principles of meteorology with detailed coverage on large- and small-scale weather hazards. He draws on specific up-to-date case studies from North America to illustrate the cause of meteorological events including hurricanes, heavy snow and ice, floods, and tornadoes. Unlike existing books on the market, Halverson delves deep into the societal impacts of these events, drawing on examples from agriculture, utility infrastructure, and commercial aviation. Each chapter also features high-quality, customized color artwork by Thomas D. Rabenhorst that helps to enhance and embed learning. Thorough in its scope, and written with an impeccable focus on the science, this book will be an essential resource for introductory undergraduate courses in severe weather, natural hazards, and extreme meteorology. It is also an excellent supplemental textbook for courses on meteorology and atmospheric science.

Lightning... ¦ Causes an average of 55-60 fatalities and 400 injuries each year ¦ Occurs with all thunderstorms ¦ Costs more than $1 billion in insured losses each year Tornadoes... ¦ Cause an average of 60-65 fatalities and 1,500 injuries each year ¦ Can produce wind speeds in excess of 200 mph ¦ Can be 1 mile wide and stay on the ground over 50 miles Straight-line Winds... ¦ Can exceed 125 mph ¦ Can cause destruction equal to a tornado ¦ Are extremely dangerous to aviation Flash Floods and Floods... ¦ Are the #1 cause of deaths associated with thunderstorms, more than 90 fatalities each year Hail... ¦ Can be larger than a softball (5 inches in diameter) ¦ Causes more than $1 billion in crop and property damage each year Some helpful tips included in this guide include how quickly these weather-events can result to a devastating situation. Therefore, it emphasizes that by having a plan in place prior to the event that is practiced from time to time, will allow response actions to be positive rather than stressful. This resource also provides guidance on the type of items that should be included in an Emergency Supply Kit for use at home, office, school, or place of business. Download or read book A Resum of the Heavy Snowfall and Persistent Cold of the Winter of 1968 1969 in the Upper Midwest and the Flood Situation Resulting Therefrom written by United States. Weather Bureau. Central Region and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The past winter was an extraordinary one, weatherwise, for most residents of the Upper Midwest. There were numerous heavy snowstorms in various sections of the area during the winter and more especially within the 75-day period beginning in mid-December and running through February. Some of these heavy snowstorms were widespread. A number of them were accompanied by strong winds and much drifting and blowing of snow resulting in blizzard or near blizzard conditions. Several were interspersed with ice storms in some localities. One of the cumulative effects of the numerous heavy snowstorms, accompanied by persistently below normal temperatures, has been the development of an unusually deep mantle of snow with a very high water content over much of the area. This has resulted in the imminence of severe flooding on many streams in the area of the Upper and Central Midwest as the spring snowmelt period begins to come to the area. The following sections and the accompanying figures and table point up the nature of the past winter's weather in the Upper Midwest and the seriousness of the flood situation that exists and is even now rapidly unfolding from the snowmelt"--Introduction
