Book excerpt: Jackson Alpheus Graves (1852-1933) and his family left Iowa in 1857 for a life as ranchers and farmers in Marysville and San Mateo, California. After graduation from St. Mary's College and a clerkship in a San Francisco law office, Graves moved to Los Angeles in 1875 and became one of the city's leading attorneys and bankers. My seventy years in California (1927) describes Graves's boyhood and education in northern california and Los Angeles as he found it in 1875: Democratic politics, the position of Hispanic citizens, conflicting land claims, railroad interests, the legal profession, social life, and farming. He offers ancedotes of thirty years of law practice in the city as well as his personal interests: hunting trips in Southern California and Oregon, a San Gabriel Valley ranch, a beach home on Terminal Island, and yachting to Catalina. After 1904, Graves's professional life centers on his work as vice president and president of the Farmers & Merchants Bank, and his book details the banking community and his interests in orange growing and the petroleum industry.

Book excerpt: William Heath Davis (1822-1909) was the son of a Boston ship captain engaged in the Hawaiian trade and a Polynesian mother. He visited California twice on trading voyages before setting up business there in 1838. In 1845 he settled permanently in San Francisco, becoming one of the city's leading merchants. His marriage to María de Jesus Estudillo tied him to the Hispanic community in his adopted region. Seventy-five years in California (1929) is an expansion of Sixty years in California, a book Davis published in 1889. It is a history of California as well as the author's memoirs of his life through the mid 1850s with an emphasis on the transformation of Yerba Buena to San Francisco, the Gold Rush, and the imposition of United States power in California.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventy-Five Years in California spans the 19th century, offering William Heath Davis' view of California's Pastoral Period. He gives readers a unique look at the disintegration of missions, the rise of the rancheros, the American Invasion, the Gold Rush and the adoption of the territory as a state. Davis himself had an interesting personal history, having been born in Hawaii in 1822, raised in Boston, traveled a great deal by sea, and became one of the most prominent merchants in San Francisco by 1845. The California Gold Rush really was a bonanza. Between 1849 and 1855 the miners gathered more than $400 million dollars; once adjusted, it is a sum today reaching into the trillions. It was a social phenomenon marked by the carnivalesque. In his work Roughing It (1872) Mark Twain's protagonist remarks as his brother heads West, "Pretty soon he would be hundreds and hundreds of miles away on the great plains and deserts, and among the mountains of the Far West, and would see buffaloes and Indians, and prairie dogs, an antelopes, and have all kinds of adventures, and may be get hanged or scalped, and have ever such a fine time, and write home and tell us all about it, and be a hero...And by and by he would become very rich, and return home by sea, and be able to talk as calmly about San Francisco and ocean, and 'the isthmus' as if it was nothing of any consequence to have seen those marvels face to face." Go they did to the Land of Golden Dreams, in the largest internal migration in American history, and the adventures and tragedies have created a large and memorable literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CALIFORNIA, The First 100 Years. 1769 - 1869. Spain wanted a military presence in California to keep out the English, French and Russians all of whom were beginning to pose threats to Spain‘s expansion to uncivilized California. Four Spanish Exhibitions, left New Spain (today‘s Mexico) in 1769, two by land and two by sea bound for San Diego. More than one third participating lost their lives on these expeditions due to scurvy and starvation. The survivors were expected to meet in San Diego to create Missions (education centers) and Presidios (Forts) to civilize the Indians at both San Diego and Monterey. Travel to California for the next 100 years by land or by sea was a high risk, dangerous trip for anyone. Indians attacked the settlers who crossed the plains with covered wagons. Weather and the severe elements took many more lives in the hot deserts and freezing High Sierras. California’s First 100 Civilized Years were governed by Spain, then Mexico and finally The United States climaxing with Statehood as our Nations 31st State, the Gold Rush and the Golden Spike.
