Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great love stories in history and fiction often somehow ended in tragedy or loss, which Lolita Jardeleza always thought was sad. Why were there no stories of great romances between ordinary, everyday people who married each other, raised children, paid mortgages, had spats, became grandparents—even great-grandparents—had arthritis, and used walkers? Romances lived and loved in “normal lives” are the real ones. These loves didn't go up like a burst of fireworks but burned on like stars, year after year, unabated, soul-satisfying, deliciously nourishing, and mind-blowing day after day. Jardeleza offers hers as proof.

Book 70 Faces Torah Poems

Download or read book 70 Faces Torah Poems written by Rachel Barenblat and published by . This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each of the poems in Seventy Faces arose in conversation with the Five Books of Moses. These poems interrogate, explore, and lovingly respond to Torah texts-the uplifting parts alongside the passages which may challenge contemporary liberal theology. Here are responses to the familiar tales of Genesis, the liberation story of Exodus, the priestly details of Leviticus, the desert wisdom of Numbers, and the anticipation of Deuteronomy. These poems balance feminism with respect for classical traditions of interpretation. They enrich any (re)reading of the Bible, and will inspire readers to their own new responses to these familiar texts.

Book Love Poems by Pedro Salinas

    Book Details:
  • Author : Pedro Salinas
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2010-05
  • ISBN : 0226734269
  • Pages : 253 pages

Download or read book Love Poems by Pedro Salinas written by Pedro Salinas and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Pedro Salinas’s 1933 collection of love poems, La voz a ti debida, was introduced to American audiences in Willis Barnstone’s 1975 English translation, it was widely regarded as the greatest sequence of love poems written by a man or a woman, in any language, in the twentieth century. Now, seventy-five years after its publication, the reputation of the poems and its multifaceted writer remains untarnished. A portrait of their era, the poems, from a writer in exile from his native civil war–torn Spain, now reemerge in our time. In this new, facing-page bilingual edition, Barnstone has added thirty-six poems written in the form of letters from Salinas to his great love, Katherine Whitmore. Discovered years later, these poems were written during and after the composition of La voz and, though disguised as prose, have all the rhythms and sounds of lineated lyric poetry. Taken together, the poems and letters are a history, a dramatic monologue, and a crushing and inevitable ending to the story of a man consumed by his love and his art. Bolstered by an elegant foreword by Salinas’s contemporary, the poet Jorge Guillén, and a masterly afterword by the Salinas scholar, Enric Bou, that considers the poet and his legacy for twenty-first century world poetry, Love Poems by Pedro Salinas will be cause for celebration throughout the world of verse and beyond.

Book Arabic and Hebrew Love Poems in Al Andalus

Download or read book Arabic and Hebrew Love Poems in Al Andalus written by Shari Lowin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-20 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arabic and Hebrew Love Poems in al-Andalus investigates a largely overlooked subset of Muslim and Jewish love poetry in medieval Spain: hetero- and homo-erotic love poems written by Muslim and Jewish religious scholars, in which the lover and his sensual experience of the beloved are compared to scriptural characters and storylines. This book examines the ways in which the scriptural referents fit in with, or differ from, the traditional Andalusian poetic conventions. The study then proceeds to compare the scriptural stories and characters as presented in the poems with their scriptural and exegetical sources. This new intertextual analysis reveals that the Jewish and Muslim scholar-poets utilized their sacred literature in their poems of desire as more than poetic ornamentation; in employing Qur’ānic heroes in their secular verses, the Muslim poets presented a justification of profane love and sanctification of erotic human passions. In the Hebrew lust poems, which utilize biblical heroes, we can detect subtle, subversive, and surprisingly placed interpretations of biblical accounts. Moving beyond the concern with literary history to challenge the traditional boundaries between secular and religious poetry, this book provides a new, multidisciplinary, approach to existing materials and will be of interest to students, scholars and researchers of Islamic and Jewish Studies as well as to those with an interest in Hebrew and Arabic poetry of Islamic Spain.

Book The Reception of W B Yeats in Europe

Download or read book The Reception of W B Yeats in Europe written by Klaus Peter Jochum and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-14 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intellectual and cultural impact of British and Irish writers cannot be assessed without reference to their reception in European countries. These essays, prepared by an international team of scholars, critics and translators, record the ways in which W. B. Yeats has been translated, evaluated and emulated in different national and linguistic areas of continental Europe. There is a remarkable split between the often politicized reception in Eastern European countries but also Spain on the one hand, and the more sober scholarly response in Western Europe on the other. Yeats's Irishness and the pre-eminence of his lyrical work have posed continuous challenges. Three further essays describe the widely divergent reactions to Yeats in his native Ireland, during his lifetime and up to the most recent years.

Book Weaving Sundown in a Scarlet Light Fifty Poems for Fifty Years

This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A magnificent selection of fifty poems to celebrate three-term US Poet Laureate Joy Harjo’s fifty years as a poet. Over a long, influential career in poetry, Joy Harjo has been praised for her “warm, oracular voice” (John Freeman, Boston Globe) that speaks “from a deep and timeless source of compassion for all” (Craig Morgan Teicher, NPR). Her poems are musical, intimate, political, and wise, intertwining ancestral memory and tribal histories with resilience and love. In this gemlike volume, Harjo selects her best poems from across fifty years, beginning with her early discoveries of her own voice and ending with moving reflections on our contemporary moment. Generous notes on each poem offer insight into Harjo’s inimitable poetics as she takes inspiration from Navajo horse songs and jazz, reckons with home and loss, and listens to the natural messengers of the earth. As evidenced in this transcendent collection, Joy Harjo’s “poetry is light and elixir, the very best prescription for us in wounded times” (Sandra Cisneros, Millions).
