Book Seventy Images of Grace in the Epistles

Download or read book Seventy Images of Grace in the Epistles written by Norma Cook Everist and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can faith speak directly to people's real lives? How can conversation around Scripture make "all the difference" in the arenas of one's daily world? People who have heard the Bible many times--or for the first time--want to know in the terms and images of their life situation. "When my world seems to be shaking all around me, why doesn't it help to hear 'You are forgiven'?" And further, "What can I say to someone who feels totally alienated from God?" Seventy Images of Grace in the Epistles will help people make connections and empower them for their ministries in daily life. The book presents an interplay of stories of people's actual lives and Epistle images of grace. Readers will begin to recognize the depth of the human predicament and the power of the gospel, thereby becoming equipped for Christian discipleship and vocation, not from duty or guilt, but from freedom. "Guides for Engagement" will help readers turn the book into a learning event.

Book Wilhelm Loehe and North America

Download or read book Wilhelm Loehe and North America written by Craig L. Nessan and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-06-19 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilhelm Loehe is one of the most significant nineteenth-century figures for North American church life and mission, whose influence continues into the present. Loehe is unique for joining together aspects of the Christian life often held to be antithetical: worship and mission, orthodoxy and pietism, evangelical proclamation and diakonia, and theological imagination and practical skill in administration. Already in the nineteenth century Loehe contributed a vital principle for advancing ecumenical understanding: the idea of "open questions." When the church confesses core teachings as one, there does not need to be agreement on all secondary matters in order to live together in church fellowship. This book explores Loehe's historical activity as a pastor, as a supporter of mission in North America, as an organizer (together with Friedrich Bauer) of theological education in North America, and as a founder of deaconess institutions in Neuendettelsau, Germany, that still exist today. The central themes represented by Loehe not only constitute a matrix that has significance for the church and its mission today but also constitute an agenda for the church of the future.

Book excerpt: Free in Deed serves as a primer in Lutheran ethics for faith and the church as the body of Christ. It captures the fruit of Craig L. Nessan's teaching of ethics and his research and reflection on Christian ethical existence over his entire career. The heart of Lutheran ethics, Nessan claims, involves serving neighbors. When Christ sets us "free indeed" (John 8:36), we are set free to serve others "in deed." Ethics involves intentional and disciplined reflection, together in community, on the choices we must make in living out our lives in the world. While the focus on loving the neighbor is not unique to Lutheran ethics, the author contends in this book that it is the most distinctive feature of ethics in the Lutheran perspective. To that end, Nessan explores biblical authority and Lutheran hermeneutics alongside the authority of the traditional elements of tradition, reason, and experience. He moves on to explore what gospel freedom looks like in the current American context. Nessan acknowledges the misinterpretation of Luther's two-kingdoms teaching, opting to describe Luther's two kingdoms as God's two strategies to bring forth the kingdom (shalom) of God. Also addressed are the themes of justification and sanctification, the vocation of the universal priesthood, the ethics of the cross, Lutheran ethics and political advocacy, and the ethics of forgiveness. The book is accessibly written with theology students, pastors, and interested lay readers in mind.

Book Created in the Image of God

Download or read book Created in the Image of God written by Otis Lee Gaston and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-08-02 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are told in the Scriptures that God desires that we know Him more than He desires sacrifices (Hosea 6:6). The way to know God is through the study of His word, the Bible, and a personal relationship with Him through our acceptance of the salvation offered through His Son, Jesus. The primary goal of Created in the Image of God is for us to know God through studying the Trinity, the three-part structure of God, as presented in the Bible and comparing and contrasting the Trinity with the three-part structure of mankind, who is created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26). Created in the Image of God attempts to bring forth relevant Scriptures as pertaining to the Trinity and the creation of mankind, as well as applicable thoughts of theological scholars as they pertain to this topic. Through the study of the trichotomic structure of mankind, we will see how mankind is able to relate to God, the meaning of regeneration at salvation, the distinction between the indwelling and the filling of the Holy Spirit, the root cause of addictive behaviors, the reason that mankind is above and different from the rest of the animal kingdom, and the purpose and cause of prevenient grace. Above all, the hope of Created in the Image of God is that it leads readers to know God more fully, so that we can love him more wholly.

Book excerpt: 70 The Dawn of New Beginning is about the thirteen-year journey of Joseph's suffering""from being a prisoner until he became the prime minister of Egypt. It is about twenty-five years of Abraham's walk with God before the birth of Isaac, from bareness to fruitfulness. It is about the nation of Israel when Jerusalem is finally recognized as the capital of Israel. This book is about "new beginning of" and "commissioning of" some truths worth knowing by the believer and unbelievers alike. When unbelievers give their lives to the Lord, it is a new beginning for them. There are some significant truths marked by the ages 20, 40, 50, 70, 80, 120 that specify certain noticeable milestones in the ongoing life of believers. For example, biblical age for emancipation is twenty, purpose driven is at age forty, an established life at fifty, and new beginnings at seventy. Israel turning seventy was marked by Jerusalem declared as the capital city by the United States.
