Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seventy-Fifth Anniversary and Rededication of Broadway Presbyterian Church, Rock Island, Illinois: 1875-1950 Time is a history maker. Names Of persons and places, dates and events are the contributors. A history is an account of facts, and the history of a church, like that Of other organizations, gathers increasing interest with increasing years, and the record becomes valuable in proportion. Our own Broadway, with a record of 75 years, has hereto fore had no published history. The disappearance from among us Of one and another who started out with us in 1900, gives us warning that if those who succeed us would know Of our early struggles, we must record them in some permanent' form for their benefit. The time is short; if we would work for God, it must be now. Adapted from 1875 record of Dr. J. W. Stewart, by, 1950 Historical Committee. • Author : Esther Benbassa

Download or read book Suffering as Identity written by Esther Benbassa and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2010-03-02 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reaching from biblical times to the present day, Esther Benbassa’s prize-winning exploration of Jewish identity is both epic and comprehensive. She shows how in the Jewish world, the representation and ritualization of suffering have shaped the history of both the people and the religion. Benbassa argues that the nineteenth century gave rise to a Jewish ‘lachrymose’ historiography, and that Jewish history was increasingly seen to be a ‘vale of tears’—a development that has become even more pronounced since the Holocaust. The treatment of the Holocaust in the State of Israel now has the form of a civil religion. In principle within reach of everyone, the ‘duty of memory’ and the uniqueness of the genocide have mitigated for many Jews the loss of other traditions. The Israeli government invokes the memory of the Holocaust to neutralize threats to its interests—ensuring that suffering continues to be a central part of Jewish identity and positioning the State of Israeli as a redemptive force.

Book Shaping Letters Shaping Communities Multilingualism and Linguistic Practice in the Late Antique Near East and Egypt

Download or read book Shaping Letters Shaping Communities Multilingualism and Linguistic Practice in the Late Antique Near East and Egypt written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-12-11 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume explores linguistic practices and choices in the late antique Eastern Mediterranean. It investigates how linguistic diversity and change influenced the social dimension of human interaction, affected group dynamics, the expression and negotiation of various communal identities, such as professional groups of mosaic-makers, stonecutters, or their supervisors in North Syria, bilingual monastic communities in Palestine, elusive producers of Coptic ritual texts in Egypt, or Jewish communities in Dura Europos and Palmyra. The key question is: what do we learn about social groups and human individuals by studying their multilingualism and language practices reflected in epigraphic and other written sources?

Book The Only Tradition

  • Publisher : State University of New York Press
  • Release : 1997-02-06
  • ISBN : 1438416652
  • Pages : 414 pages

Download or read book The Only Tradition written by William W. Quinn Jr. and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1997-02-06 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Only Tradition examines the first principles of the perennial philosophy or ancient wisdom tradition as expressed in the writings of René Guénon and Ananda K. Coomaraswamy, and the current breakdown of value, meaning, and culture in the West due to the decline of these principles since the thirteenth century. The book further focuses on the relationship or reciprocity between the first principles and Western and Eastern culture, and discusses the future development of a homogenous, worldwide system of belief that would restore value and meaning to people's lives. Quinn argues for a return to the first principles inherent in the perennial philosophy, which constitute the sacred primordial Tradition and which inform all the world's great religious traditions. His book makes an excellent introduction to this powerful current of European esoteric thought—primordial tradition.
