Book excerpt: The production and removal of Nox and other combustion products during fossil fuel combustion is a serious environmental problem for both stationary and mobile energy systems. Since stationary systems are faced with increased utilization of coal, oil shale, or synthetic fuel oils, all of which have significant levels of fuel-bound nitrogen, NOx formation may become acute. Recent studies of the production of NOx due to oxidation of fuel nitrogen indicate that a critical role is played by the interaction of NH/sub i/ (i = 1,2,3) species with NO, O2, OH, and H. In fact, these reactions play a vital role in the homogeneous removal of NOx from combustion exhaust streams upon addition of NH3 or NH3-like compounds. Over the past two years, there has been an increased understanding of the chemistry of the NH/sub i//NOx system at combustor exhaust temperatures. For an ammonia addition system to be effective in reducing NO/sub x/ emissions, it must work successfully in the presence of a variety of sulfur-bearing compounds present in the products of combusted coal and oil shale. The work in progress has three major objectives. The first objective is to determine whether the reactions of SO2 (the predominant sulfur-bearing compound present) + NH/sub i/ (i = 1,2,3) directly produce NO/sub x/ in the temperature range of 300 to 1500 K. Depending on the products and value of these rate constants, the effectiveness of NO removal by NH3 could be dramatically affected. The second objective is to screen and evaluate various sulfur-containing scavenger precursors such as SO, SO2, HS, and H2S to assess their impact on the NH/sub i//NO/sub x/ chemical system.

Book Third Quarterly Technical Summary Report on the Homogeneous Production and Removal of NO sub X from Combustion Exhaust Flows 27 Reactions of Sulfur Or Sulfur Compounds with Other Gases Or Vapors

This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The addition of ammonia to the exhaust stream of stationary combustors is a promising approach toward reducing NO/sub x/ emissions. The use of high sulfur-content fuels will produce moderate quantities of SO/sub 2/ and other sulfur-bearing compounds which may affect the effectiveness of this thermal deNO/sub x/ process. Modeling efforts indicate that the presence of SO/sub 2/ is slightly beneficial in removing NO above 1250K. In addition, experiments show that the ammonia species (NH/sub i/, i = 1,2,3) have no appreciable reaction rate with SO/sub 2/. An explanation of the effect of SO/sub 2/ on the thermal deNO/sub x/ process is presented, as well as preliminary calculations leading to the measurement of the key reaction of H + SO/sub 3.

This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rate constants for the reaction OH + NH3 .-->. NH2 + H2O have been measured over the temperature range 294 - 1075 K. The data can be fit by the Arrhenius expression k(cm3 molecule−1 s−1) = 5.41 +- 0.86 x 10−12 exp( -2120 +- 143 kcal mol−1/RT). A chemical model of the NO/sub x/ chemistry has been developed which includes 54 reactions. Although not yet complete, the reaction set clearly indicates the key reaction is NH2 + NO. The determination of the product channels and their branching ratios is of utmost importance in understanding the effect of NH3 addition to combustor exhaust streams for removal of NO/sub x.

Book Homogeneous Production and Removal of NO3 from Combustion Exhaust Gases Fifth Quarterly Technical Summary Report September 1 November 30 1979

Download or read book Homogeneous Production and Removal of NO3 from Combustion Exhaust Gases Fifth Quarterly Technical Summary Report September 1 November 30 1979 written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rate constant for the reaction of NH2 + NO has been measured over the temperature range of 294 to 1200°K. It exhibits a decrease in value with increasing temperatures. An upper limit to the rate of reaction of NH3 + NO .-->. NH2 + HNO is also reported. The hydroxyl radical has been identified as one of the products of the NH2 + NO reaction, and the implications of this upon the modeling is discussed.

Book excerpt: Over the past decade the topic of emissions reduction and control has remained an important area of research due to the enforcement of various Government policies in an attempt to minimize the impact on the environment. One area in which a great deal of research has been conducted to address this policy is NOx/SOx suppression. However, despite the progress that has been made over this time period, further research into the most effective method of reducing NOx/SOx emissions is still urgently required. In developed countries, a more stringent requirement in the level of emissions (such as is NOx/SOx component of less than 10ppm) will be enforced in the near future. Developing countries will also need a new technology that is effective and that is suited to each countries needs. Additional research and development efforts are thus necessary to meet such requirements. This compendium contains a collection of key papers themed around NOx/SOx emissions from combustion of hydrocarbon resources and the attempts to secure an efficient and effective method for reducing these emissions. These key papers are taken from the journals Fuel, Fuel Processing Technology and Progress in Energy and Combustion Science.
