Book Mary Mills Patrick s Cosmopolitan Mission and the Constantinople Woman s College

Download or read book Mary Mills Patrick s Cosmopolitan Mission and the Constantinople Woman s College written by Carolyn McCue Goffman and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-01-28 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Mills Patrick’s Constantinople Woman’s College was one of the most influential institutions of higher learning for women in the Middle East in the last decades of the Ottoman Empire. Patrick arrived in the 1870s to evangelize, but she gradually distanced herself from Christian proselytism in order to create a “cosmopolitan” college for all Ottoman women. Patrick was president of the Constantinople Woman’s College for 34 years, protecting the institution through the Balkan Wars, World War One, the British occupation of Constantinople, the demise of the Ottoman Empire, and the founding of the Turkish Republic. Just as the late Ottoman Empire underwent extraordinary changes, so did Patrick transform herself and the Constantinople College to meet the demands of a twentieth-century Muslim state, ultimately sacrificing her “cosmopolitan,” heterogeneous student body to an ethnically homogeneous one that reflected the newly racialized nationalism of the Turkish Republic. Mary Mills Patrick’s Cosmopolitan Mission and the Constantinople Woman’s College explores Patrick’s career from the 1870s to the 1930s, tracking her personal religious struggle and her professional transformation from Protestant evangelist, to feminist educator, to advocate for Muslim women, to, finally, supporter of Turkish nationalism.

This book was released on 2017-01-24 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelfth Annual Report of the Woman's Board of Missions: Presented at Its Annual Meeting, in Springfield, Mass., January 13, 1880 Once more we stand upon the threshold which divides two years of the life of our Woman's Board of Missions - a brief resting-place between our past and our unknown future. As in former years, through the blessing of our Heavenly Father, we may still look backward thankfully, and forward hopefully. While we mourn over all our shortcomings, our lukewarmness, mistakes and failures, thoroughly conscious that whatever of suc cess or strength we may have has come from above, we yet rejoice most earnestly in all we have been able to accomplish. We rejoice at what our God has done through us; at the plans he has helped us to form and carry forward; at the ever-increasing confidence of the Christian women in our churches in our society, shown by constant accessions to our numbers; at the many seemingly unmistakable tokens of our 'master's approval. We rejoice to feel that, year by year, our work is becoming a living reality to hundreds of women who formerly gave only cool, indifferent approbation to a good object, but who now gladly give time and talents and money and prayer to a cause that lies very near their hearts. To bring the record of a year crowded with labor of various kinds within the limits of a half hour, will allow but the briefest mention of the more important points. Book Tenth Annual Report of the Woman s Board of Missions of the Interior

This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tenth Annual Report of the Woman's Board of Missions of the Interior: Presented at Its Annual Meeting, Held in Kalamazoo, Mich., November 6 and 7, 1878 The great calamities which, during the past year, have thrown their shadow upon the principal Missions of the American Board are, we believe, unprecedented in any former year, considered both in their severity and wide extent. Among these are to be reckoned the horrors of war, in greater or less measure, in all our stations in the Ottoman Empire, with attendant famine and pestilence, these last prevailing to a fearful degree also in India and Ceylon; and last and most terrible, the famine and fever of China. But in the midst of these appalling scenes the servants of God have found in Him a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall. They can indeed, in the words of the Psalmist, say unto God, How terrible art Thou in Thy works! Through the greatness of Thy power shall Thine enemies submit themselves unto Thee. The faith of our mission aries, as we learn from their abundant testimony, has not been tried by long waiting for a sight of His purposes; but, in the very day of terrible visitation, He has assured them by His providence that all these things are working together for good, not only to those who love Him, but also for the advancement of His kingdom in the whole.
