Book Seven Trees of Stone

Download or read book Seven Trees of Stone written by Leo Hunt and published by Candlewick Press. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just when Luke thinks he’s left Deadside—and Dunbarrow—behind, he finds himself back where it all started as the two worlds violently collide in a riveting finale. Now that last year’s nightmare is in the past, Luke and Elza have started college, and Luke’s mum has moved on, too, with a new boyfriend named Darren. Life is returning to something like normal — until Luke and Elza spend New Year’s Eve at Darren’s cottage and find themselves transported to the forest near Dunbarrow with no knowledge of how they got there. Gray fog is spreading through town, the sky is awash with green light, and something is clearly very wrong: a great spirit from Deadside, known as the Barrenwhite Tree, has broken open the gateway between the living and spirit worlds, leaving Dunbarrow to be taken over by the world of the dead. Together with Luke’s old friends from school, who seem oddly unaffected by the plague of insanity unleashed on the town, Luke and Elza need to find a way to close the gateway while they still can. Not only that, but the devilish Mr. Berkley is abroad in Dunbarrow with an agenda of his own — and he hasn’t forgotten Luke’s debt to him.

Book The Trees of San Francisco

Download or read book The Trees of San Francisco written by Michael Sullivan and published by Pomegranate. This book was released on 2004 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mike Sullivan loves his adopted city of San Francisco, and he loves trees. In The Trees of San Francisco he has combined his passions, offering a striking and handy compendium of botanical information, historical tidbits, cultivation hints, and more. Sullivan's introduction details the history of trees in the city, a fairly recent phenomenon. The text then piques the reader's interest with discussions of 71 city trees. Each tree is illustrated with a photograph--with its common and scientific names prominently displayed--and its specific location within San Francisco, along with other sites; frequently a close-up shot of the tree is included. Sprinkled throughout are 13 sidelights relating to trees; among the topics are the city's wild parrots and the trees they love; an overview of the objectives of the Friends of the Urban Forest; and discussions about the link between Australia's trees and those in the city, such as the eucalyptus. The second part of the book gets the reader up and about, walking the city to see its trees. Full-page color maps accompany the seven detailed tours, outlining the routes; interesting factoids are interspersed throughout the directions. A two-page color map of San Francisco then highlights 25 selected neighborhoods ideal for viewing trees, leading into a checklist of the neighborhoods and their trees.

Book excerpt: The future is big right now—for perhaps the first time, our society is more focused on what is going to happen in the future than what is happening right now. In Trees on Mars: Our Obsession with the Future, cultural critic and indie entrepreneur Hal Niedzviecki asks how and when we started believing we could and should “create the future.” What is it like to live in a society utterly focused on what is going to happen next? Through visits to colleges, corporations, tech conferences, factories and more, Niedzviecki traces the story of how owning the future has become irresistible to us. In deep conversation with both the beneficiaries and victims of our relentless obsession with the future, Niedzviecki asks crucial questions: Where are we actually heading? How will we get there? And whom may we be leaving behind?

Book Aristotle s Ladder Darwin s Tree

Download or read book Aristotle s Ladder Darwin s Tree written by J. David Archibald and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-08-19 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading paleontologist J. David Archibald explores the rich history of visual metaphors for biological order from ancient times to the present and their influence on humans' perception of their place in nature, offering uncommon insight into how we went from standing on the top rung of the biological ladder to embodying just one tiny twig on the tree of life. He begins with the ancient but still misguided use of ladders to show biological order, moving then to the use of trees to represent seasonal life cycles and genealogies by the Romans. The early Christian Church then appropriated trees to represent biblical genealogies. The late eighteenth century saw the tree reclaimed to visualize relationships in the natural world, sometimes with a creationist view, but in other instances suggesting evolution. Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species (1859) exorcised the exclusively creationist view of the "tree of life," and his ideas sparked an explosion of trees, mostly by younger acolytes in Europe. Although Darwin's influence waned in the early twentieth century, by midcentury his ideas held sway once again in time for another and even greater explosion of tree building, generated by the development of new theories on how to assemble trees, the birth of powerful computing, and the emergence of molecular technology. Throughout Archibald's far-reaching study, and with the use of many figures, the evolution of "tree of life" iconography becomes entwined with our changing perception of the world and ourselves.
