Download or read book Seven Radical Elders written by David Janzen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-10-19 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many young idealists, after a few failures, burn out and return to status quo lives. Not so with the seven radicals in this book, who met in an interracial house church and intentional community on Chicago’s West Side during the civil rights era. Here you will make the acquaintance of a Church of the Brethren pastoral couple who tried to bring communal life to the black ghetto; a fashionable socialite who trashed her curlers and joined the simple life; an elite Stanford graduate who cast his lot with a bus full of black teens on an epic ride to Washington, DC, to hear MLK’s “I Have a Dream” speech; two ethnic-Mennonite women who became community leaders and elders during a male-dominated era; and a painfully shy “geek” awakened to the traumas of racism by five days in the Albany, Georgia, jail. Now, in their seventies, eighties, and nineties, these veterans of community witness to the possibility of radical life conversions, engagement with the hard, slow work of racial reconciliation that learns from mistakes and does not quit. This book concludes with the invitation to the joyful path of becoming who God made us to be—saints.

Download or read book Visible Saints written by Edmund Sears Morgan and published by Ithaca, N. Y., Cornell University Press [1965. This book was released on 1963 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a detailed account of the genesis, flowering, and decline of the Puritan ideal of a church of the elect in England and America, Morgan offers an important reinterpretation of a pivotal era in New England history. Historians have generally supposed that the main outlines of the Puritan church were determined in England and Holland and transplanted to the new world. Morgan convincingly suggests that the distinguishing characteristic of the New England churches, the ideal of a church composed exclusively of true and tested saints, developed fully only in the 1630's and 1640's, some time after the first settlers arrived in New England. He also examines the influence of the Separatist colony at Plymouth on the later settlers of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and follows the difficulties created by a definition of the religious community so selective that the New England churches nearly expired for lack of saints to fill them--From publisher description.
Download or read book Holy Women Holy Men written by Church Publishing, and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2010 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fully revised and expanded, this new work is the first major revision of the liturgical calendar of the Episcopal Church in more than 40 years! It is the official revision of Lesser Feasts and Fasts and authorized by the 2009 General Convention. All commemorations in Lesser Feasts and Fasts have been retained, and many new ones added. Three scripture readings (instead of current two) are provided for all minor holy days. Additional new material includes a votive mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary, many more ecumenical commemorations, plus a proper for space exploration. For years the oft revised volume, Lesser Feasts and Fasts (LFF), has served parishes and individuals mark part of the holiness of each day by providing Scripture readings, a collect, a Eucharistic preface, and a narrative about those remembered on the church's calendar that day whose lives have witnessed to the grace of God. Holy Women, Holy Men (HWHM) is a major effort to revise, but also to expand and enrich LFF. Where LFF provided two readings (gospel and other New Testament) plus a psalm, HWHM adds an Old Testament citation. Where LFF was limited to few non-Anglicans in the post-reformation period (and few non-Episcopalians after 1789), HWHM dramatically broadens appreciation for other Christians and their traditions. Over-emphasis on clergy is redressed by additional laity, males by females, and "in-church" activities by contributions well beyond the workings of institutional agendas. These almost daily commemorations occupy over 600 of the book's 785 pages, by far the lion's share of its content. Remaining sections address: principles of revision and guides for future revision; liturgical propers for seasons (Advent/Christmas, Lent, and Easter); and new propers for a miscellany of propers usable with individuals (or events) not officially listed in the formal calendar. Two cycles of propers for daily Eucharist are also included, one covering a six week period, the other a two year cycle.
Download or read book Living The Code written by Dakota Livesay and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-08-29 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many historians agree that America’s greatness is a direct result of America being a frontier country for our first 300 years. To survive the harsh life of the frontier required people who were hard working and creative, with ingenuity and a desire to work with their neighbor. As far back as the time of Moses and the Ten Commandments, people have lived by principles that worked as guidelines for successful lives. And the same was true with the people who lived on the American frontier. Although they were 300 years in the making, these principles were solidified by the American cowboy in our last frontier. They became known as “The Code of the West.” To make this code relevant to our lives today, Dakota has used a large number of stories and examples from the past and the present that show us how to apply them to each of our daily lives; and as a result, live a fulfilling life.

Download or read book Rebel Between Spirit and Law written by Scott Alan Kugle and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the authority of saints in Islam and their ability to build communities among Muslims in North Africa. It analyzes the power generated in religious communities through their allegiance to saints, a power usually identified with the term Sufism. In the late 15th and 16th centuries, a community of Sufis in Fes (Fez), Morocco, and other urban centers in North Africa advocated this paradigm of sainthood during a time of intense political and religious crisis. Juridical sainthood, a concept that fuses Islamic legal rectitude and devotional piety, was the center of their reformist agenda. The juridical saint was to be absorbed in legal training and religious values, in ways that questioned political loyalty and dynastic legitimacy. Scott A. Kugle explores this tradition by focusing on the life and writings of Shaykh Ahmad Zarruq. Following his exile from Fes, Zarruq traveled widely over North Africa, spreading his teachings and writings and attracting followers from Morocco to Mecca. The life and teachings of Zarruq remain useful for Muslims. They are a piece of the past that present-day Muslims are rediscovering and redeploying to reconcile Islam's heritage with its very troubled post-colonial present.

Download or read book The Words written by Said Nursi and published by Tughra Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Words forms the first part of the Risale-i Nur collection, an approximately 6,000-page Qur?anic commentary. In this commentary Bediuzzaman Said Nursi's main concern is how to save and strengthen one's religious belief when confronted with the current prevalent materialist philosophy. It does not explain when or why a verse was revealed, but rather the truth that it represents. Subjects discussed are God, resurrection, prophethood, destiny, ego, worship, and how the truth of these matters is revealed through nature. The author also analyzes naturalist and materialist philosophy, as well as scientific theories and findings, and refutes them based on evidence that is clearly apparent in nature itself.
