Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seven Great Hymns Character as to deserve rank as the great hymns of universal literature. In this sea son of Lent - a season which is each year more widely observed by those who pro fess and call themselves Christians - a pre sensation of the greatest of the hymns of the Christian Church is appropriate. This not only for their religious significance, but because of their literary value; an attribute too often lost sight of by the general reader, who does not appreciate the fact that a knowledge of the masterpieces of hymno graphy is as essential to a broad literary education as a knowledge of the master pieces of short-story composition. Were we obliged to search the treasures of the various hymnodies, the task of selecting the seven great hymns - one for each Wednes day in Lent - would be appalling, and years might well be occupied in the task; but, fortunately, the responsibility of selection and the labor of appraisement has been. Book Precious Hymns Classic Reprint

Download or read book Precious Hymns Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Precious Hymns For a long time we have felt in our Sabbath School and Prayer Meetings the need of a Book of Song - something different from any of the numerous publications designed for such use. A book, first of all, without notes. The notes are valueless to nine-tenths of our scholars, and tend to confuse those who do not read music. A book that shall contain a larger number and proportion of the good old fashioned hymns and songs which are made doubly dear by sacred associations. A book containing the choicest selections of more recent Sunday-school songs, such as we have found by experience are best liked by the children, and best calculated to do them good. In this little book we have attempted to meet this want. How successful we have been, can be determined only after it has been for some time in the hands of our children, and in use in our Prayer Meetings. May the blessing of God attending it be proportionate to the sincerity of our desire in undertaking the task, rather than the skill with which we have executed it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns, Original and Selected Whilst we may desire that there should be more union of mind and judgment in matters of doctrine and worship, and upon the subject of books of praise and divine song, a different view may be taken of the numberless Hymn Books extant. We may readily see that there is, in our day - together with its new openings of thought, and its varied tendencies - a decided spirit of worship, of devo tion, and of communion with God; these find their expression in the publication of all kinds of Hymns, and of every variety of selections. The service of song was an important one in jewish times. David gave great attention to it during his reign. In the present age, especially in the later centuries, much care has been bestowed upon this branch of wor ship. Doubtless the use of psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs, was common in, the Apostles' days. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In modern times Hymns have assumed such an important position in our public worship, that some acquaintance with their origin, history and meaning, Seems necessary for their intelligent use. Influenced, therefore, by this idea, I was induced to prepare and preach three series of seven sermons each on the subject of Hymns and their Singers. The result will be found in this book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns of the Ages: For Public and Social Worship In the preparation of the Hymns of the Ages, the Editor has expend ed a vast amount of time and labor, and has attempted to gather the best hymns and tunes both of Europe and America. The cost of copyrights has been very great. He wishes to return thanks to those composers who have kindly allowed him to use their pieces gratis; and to a large number of European composers whose addresses it has been impossible to secure. He is under lasting obligation to the accomplished musician Prof. N. Bowditch Clapp, for his revision of the musical part of the work; and, for their help in the selection of hymns and tunes, to Rev. M. D. Hoge, D. D., Rev. W. A. Campbell, D. D., Rev. T. D. Witherspoon, D. D., Rev. W. S. Lacy D. D., and Rev. J. P. Smith D. D. These distinguished divines have afforded invaluable assistance by giving the benefit of their experience and taste in the preparation of the work. A large chorus choir, trained to sing rapidly, and with spirit, is the best inspiration for congregational singing. After the introduction of a new book, there should also be meetings held on some evening during the week for congregational practice that the people may learn new tunes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns This is a perfect collection of the Hymns, the only one; but it contains also an addition of fifty-six new Hymns, fulfilling with tolerable accuracy his original conception of what the Hymn Book should be and should contain. It is published in its present shape, not only as the Author's text and as a library edition, matching the 1857 edition of his Poems, but chiefly as a book of spiritual reading. It has been asked for very urgently and for some years by several persons, who have to do with ministering to those, with whom, from their being in sickness or in sorrow, the effort of following a connected prose book is hardly to be expected. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Chain of Praise: Hymns HE wellnigh ninety hymns which appear for the first time in this edition are not introduced together or set in chronological order, but are arranged among the others according to the theme, in conformity with the character and title of the book, so as to fit in as links of one unbroken Chain of Praise. While no chronological order is observed, I have affixed the date of composition to each hymn for the sake of friends in England and America interested in such matters. The half-century (1845 - 1894) which separates the last born from the first born of these strains, a period so fruitful in religious change, has but the more commended to me that conception of Religion as an inward principle, as a moral and spiritual power manifesting its work on the heart by its workings on the life which pervades the latest as it inspired the earliest of these divine songs. I have sought to combine the depth of the seventeenth with the width of the nineteenth century, to blend the spirit of the ancestral Puritans with the loftiest aspirations of our own time. Seven of the hymns put forth in the First Edition have been withdrawn on account of imperfection ofviii Preface to this Edition. All deviations from the author's text are indicated in the note beneath the hymn. The date set to the hymn is the earliest date obtainable, ordinarily that of its composition, in some cases necessarily that of first publication. Where two dates are given, they indicate that of the original form of the hymn, and that of the author's revised text used in this book. The word publ. Indicates that the date of writing is unknown, and that the date of publication is posthumous. The letter c, (circa), before a date is used where exact certainty is unobtainable. The names of the tunes, unless for good reason to the contrary, are those authoritatively given them by the composer or his representative. Tunes bearing identical names are distinguished by adding the composer's name in brackets, e. G. Alleluia (lowe), alleluia (wesley). The dates set to the tunes are the dates of first publication. Where dates, either of hymns or tunes, are altogether wanting, the date of the author's or composer's birth and death are given in brackets, e. G. (1816 or, where living, that of birth only, e. G.
