Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seven Centuries in the Kneeland Family Some ten years ago the "Encyclopedia of Contemporary Biography" of New York, published a biographical sketch of the writer, which contained an alleged genealogical summary of the Kneeland family in this country. A little study satisfied me that the editor was several miles out of the correct path in his data. Spurred on by the discovery of this fact, I commenced a systematic inquiry into the heretofore of the family, running back several centuries, and in the completion thereof have examined critically some thousands of volumes and tens of thousands of names, inscribed on musty records in the cobwebbed archives of the past. Although the history, prior to 1800, has been mostly made up from bible entries, public records, historical and genealogical works, the continuation could never have been perfected but for the assistance of numerous members of the family, to whom general credit is herewith given and specific mention is hereinafter inserted. The fact that not a single criminal act has appeared to mar a history covering nearly seven centuries, has, after all, made the work a labor of love. That fact is a wonderful stimulus to each living and future member of the family, and a warning against being the first to break the record of such a law-abiding, honorable race. Jefferson writes of his dread of “a doting old age.” He inserts an anonymous note in the Richmond Enquirer denying that he has endorsed a candidate for the next presidential election, and he publishes two letters in that newspaper under his own name to refute a Federalist claim that he once benefited by overcharging the United States Treasury. Jefferson does not reply to unsolicited letters seeking his opinion on constitutional matters, judicial review, and a call for universal white male suffrage in Virginia. Fearing that it would set a dangerous precedent, he declines appointment as patron of a new society “for the civilisation of the Indians.” Jefferson is also asked to comment on proposed improvements to stoves, lighthouses, telescopes, and navigable balloons. Citing his advanced age and stiffened wrist, he avoids detailed replies and allows his complaint to John Adams about the volume of incoming correspondence to be leaked to the press in hopes that strangers will stop deluging them both with letters. Jefferson approves of the growth of Unitarianism and predicts that “there is not a young man now living in the US. who will not die an Unitarian.”
