Book SEVA to Realize the SELF

Download or read book SEVA to Realize the SELF written by Mahesh C. Mangalick and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In villages around India, many people have no facilities that provide adequate health care and education, despite the Indian government allocating an enormous amount of funding. In order to offset this lack of health care and educational facilities in Indian villages, many private individuals and organizations provide medical services and educational opportunities to the poor. This book details two major SEVA projects founded by Mr. and Mrs. P.C. Mangalick in Agra, India. SEVA is selfless service that an individual or group provides to underprivileged people. These acts of selfless service are prompted by an awareness of the presence of God in all beings. This book describes how SEVA leads to a purified mind and, therefore, an understanding of the self, the part of "one source" (God) within an individual’s personality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experience of wonder—encompassing awe, bewilderment, curiosity, excitement, fear, dread, mystery, perplexity, reverence, surprise, and supplication—and the ineffable quality of that which is wondrous have been entwined in religion and human experience. Yet strangely, wonder in non-western societies, including South Asia, has rarely been acknowledged or understood. This groundbreaking volume brings together historians and ethnographers of South Asia, including leading and emerging scholars, to consider the place and meaning of wonder in such varied joyful, tense, and creative sites and moments as Sufi music performances in Gujarat, Tamil graveyard processions, trans women's charitable practices, Kipling's Orientalist tales, village Kuchipudi dance performances, and Rajasthani healing shrines. Offering a synthetic and scholarly reading of wonder that speaks to the political, aesthetic, and ethical worlds of South Asia, these essays redefine the nature and meaning of wonder and its worlds. Taken together, they provide an invaluable research tool for those in the fields of Asian religion, religion in context, and South Asian religions in particular.

Book Civil Society and Democratization in India

Download or read book Civil Society and Democratization in India written by Sarbeswar Sahoo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-26 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing a distinctive theoretical framework on civil society, this book examines how Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) contribute towards democratization in India and what conditions facilitate or inhibit their contribution. It assesses three different kinds of politics within civil society – liberal pluralist, neo-Marxist, and communitarian – which have had different implications in relation to democratization. By making use of in-depth empirical analysis and comparative case studies of three developmental NGOs that work among the tribal communities in the socio-historical context of south Rajasthan, the book shows that civil society is not necessarily a democratizing force, but that it can have contradictory consequences in relation to democratization. It discusses how the democratic effect of civil society is not a result of the "stock of social capital" in the community but is contingent upon the kinds of ideologies and interests that are present or ascendant not just within the institutions of civil society but also within the state. The book delivers new insights on NGOs, democratization, civil society, the state, political society, tribal politics, politics of Hindu Nationalism, international development aid and grassroots social movements in India. It enables readers to understand better the multifaceted nature of civil society, its relationship with the state, and its implications for development and democratization.

Book excerpt: Jay Shetty, social media superstar and host of the #1 podcast On Purpose, distills the timeless wisdom he learned as a monk into practical steps anyone can take every day to live a less anxious, more meaningful life. When you think like a monk, you’ll understand: -How to overcome negativity -How to stop overthinking -Why comparison kills love -How to use your fear -Why you can’t find happiness by looking for it -How to learn from everyone you meet -Why you are not your thoughts -How to find your purpose -Why kindness is crucial to success -And much more... Shetty grew up in a family where you could become one of three things—a doctor, a lawyer, or a failure. His family was convinced he had chosen option three: instead of attending his college graduation ceremony, he headed to India to become a monk, to meditate every day for four to eight hours, and devote his life to helping others. After three years, one of his teachers told him that he would have more impact on the world if he left the monk’s path to share his experience and wisdom with others. Heavily in debt, and with no recognizable skills on his résumé, he moved back home in north London with his parents. Shetty reconnected with old school friends—many working for some of the world’s largest corporations—who were experiencing tremendous stress, pressure, and unhappiness, and they invited Shetty to coach them on well-being, purpose, and mindfulness. Since then, Shetty has become one of the world’s most popular influencers. In 2017, he was named in the Forbes magazine 30-under-30 for being a game-changer in the world of media. In 2018, he had the #1 video on Facebook with over 360 million views. His social media following totals over 38 million, he has produced over 400 viral videos which have amassed more than 8 billion views, and his podcast, On Purpose, is consistently ranked the world’s #1 Health and Wellness podcast. In this inspiring, empowering book, Shetty draws on his time as a monk to show us how we can clear the roadblocks to our potential and power. Combining ancient wisdom and his own rich experiences in the ashram, Think Like a Monk reveals how to overcome negative thoughts and habits, and access the calm and purpose that lie within all of us. He transforms abstract lessons into advice and exercises we can all apply to reduce stress, improve relationships, and give the gifts we find in ourselves to the world. Shetty proves that everyone can—and should—think like a monk.

This book was released on 2022-11-09 with total page 2883 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Started in 1958, Sanathana Sarathi is a monthly magazine devoted to Sathya (Truth), Dharma (Righteousness), Shanti (Peace) and Prema (Love) - the four cardinal principles of Bhagawan Baba's philosophy. It is published from Prasanthi Nilayam (the Abode of Highest Peace) and acts as a mouthpiece of Baba's Ashram as it speaks of the important events that take place in His sacred Abode, besides carrying Divine Messages conveyed through Divine Discourses of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. The word meaning of Sanathana Sarathi is the 'Eternal Charioteer'. It signifies the presence of the Lord in every being as the atma guiding their lives like a charioteer. It implies that he who places his life, the body being likened to a chariot, in an attitude of surrender in the hands of the Lord, will be taken care of by the Lord even as a charioteer would take the occupant of his chariot safely to its destination. The magazine is an instrument to disseminate spiritual knowledge for the moral, physical and mental uplift of humanity without any discrimination as the subject matter discussed therein is always of common interest and of universal appeal. The fifteen Vahinis - streams of sacredness - known as the Vahini Series comprising annotation and interpretation of the Upanishads and other scriptures, Itihasas like the Ramayana, the Bhagavatha and the Mahabharata, and authentic explanations on Dhyana, Dharma, Prema, etc., have been serially published in this magazine as and when they emanated from the Divine pen of Bhagawan Baba. This magazine is published in almost all Indian languages, English and Telugu from Prasanthi Nilayam and others from respective regions. Every year Sanathana Sarathi comes out with a special issue in November commemorating the Divine Birthday. The English and Telugu magazines are posted on the 10th and 23rd respectively, of every month, from Prasanthi Nilayam. This magazine has wide, ever increasing circulation in India as well as abroad, as the study of it brings the reader closer to the philosophy of the Avatar in simple understandable language THUS SPAKE SAI... Discoursing during the launch of Sanathana Sarathi... From this day, our Sanathana Sarathi will lead to victory the cohorts of truth - the Vedas, the Sastras and similar scriptures of all faiths, against the forces of the ego such as injustice, falsehood, immorality and cruelty. This is the reason why it has emerged. This Sarathi will fight in order to establish world prosperity. It is bound to sound the paean of triumph when universal Ananda is achieved.

Book excerpt: How does someone share a passion for service, for hospitality, when life itself can be so inhospitable? Like many young Indian women of her day, Kiran's life was shaped by family tradition and duty. Her life trajectory was pre-set. Yet, while still a young girl, the most unlikely of events ultimately shaped Kiran's calling and ignited a passion for service. Her own grandmother's inspiration would completely transform her life and her career. As a young mother living in Hong Kong, Kiran faced personal struggles and an uncertain future. Unshaken, she was determined to make her own way. She drew on her instinct to serve and leapt into the arena she knew best - hospitality. Leveraging her cooking and design skills acquired as a young girl, Kiran launched a successful catering and concept design business, quickly followed by a specialty foods venture.Prior to venturing out on her own, Kiran was a social mover and leader in her community. Now she found herself a hands-on leader in the "trenches". Her work was diverse and exhilarating. Kiran found herself pitching her concept designs in a board room in the morning, and then standing on an eighteen-foot hydraulic lift completing decorations in a 5-star hotel late into the night. Her sheer tenacity and drive to share her gift opened up doors to some of Asia's top restaurants, hotels and institutions. After the handover of Hong Kong to China in 1997, Kiran's family decided to relocate to San Francisco. The adjustment to a new life in completely unique surroundings produced another crossroad and a life-altering decision. Kiran was a self-made entrepreneur and artisan of service, but she lacked classical training. Should she pivot and recast herself in a completely different environment? In this reflective memoir, Kiran Robinson paints a portrait of service leadership, or Seva-leadership - a person who overcomes adversity to lead through selfless service. Imparting insight gathered over her 30-year career in the hospitality industry, Kiran draws on her personal journey to convey the key ingredients to becoming a leader in this field.
