Book Early Settlers and Indian Fighters of Southwest Texas

Download or read book Early Settlers and Indian Fighters of Southwest Texas written by A.J. Sowell and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on 1900-01-01 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition is abridged and annotated with updated information. A judge from Prussia. A French Texas Ranger. Emigrants from all over the U.S. Their names and stories are mostly now forgotten but were recorded in this 1900 volume by Andrew Jackson Sowell. They were mostly young, hardy, and looking for new opportunities in land they felt was wide open but, in fact, was inhabited by Native Americans. The lives of these early pioneers is part of the history of the American West. The original bound edition of this book ran over 1100 pages and most of that content is here. It's the story of an incredibly violent and adventurous time that was lived by the people whose stories you find here. Sowell talked to them all and created one of the most interesting collections of personal histories of the wild West. For less than you'd spend on gas going to the library, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One-hundred-fifty miles west of Dallas, on a gently rolling prairie that was once the predatory domain of the Plains Indians, lies Shackelford County. Anglo-American settlers began arriving in the 1850s to raise livestock and cultivate crops near the Clear Fork of the Brazos River. To protect the settlers from the Indians, the US Army established Fort Griffin in 1867. In true Wild West fashion, the raucous town of Fort Griffin sprang up nearby to service the soldiers, cattle drovers, and buffalo hunters. In 1874, Albany became the county seat, and with the arrival of the Texas Central Railroad in 1881, then the oil and gas boom in 1910, both Albany and Moran flourished while Fort Griffin folded. Today, Shackelford Countys economy is based on cattle ranching, farming, petroleum, and hunting. Visitors enjoy shopping Albanys beautifully restored Main Street and taking in the Old Jail Art Center, the stately limestone courthouse, the Fort Griffin State Historic Site, and the Fort Griffin Fandangle.

Book excerpt: In this publication, which is reprinted from "The Register of the Kentucky Historical Society," the author has furnished a history of the Peters Colony as well as a list of the colonists themselves, which comprises the final half of the book. In this list the genealogist is given full scope for his researches, as each of the 2,000 settlers is positively identified with regard to the following information: name, marital status, occupation, age, year of migration to Texas, county of settlement, state of birth, and state from which he migrated. Professor Connor extracted his information from original sources in the general land office, records of the Peters Colony, and the 1850 census of Texas.

Book excerpt: Explore the history of immigration to the United States through the eyes of two of its earliest familiesthe Nuckollses and the Lymans. Charles R. Nuckolls Jr. examines the religious strife, war, and other problems that forced his descendants and others to flee to the New World. His examination of his familys role in historic events provides a framework for understanding the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the beginnings of government in the United States. The Roses presents the history of the Lyman family in New England and then follows the Nuckolls family of Virginia as they head west. It will take all of their strength and courage to survive financial panics, wars, and social upheavals. An examination of the roles the Lymans and Nuckollses played in the founding of various colonies, the American Revolution, and other important events helps convey the important position immigrants held in the development of America. Take a detailed look at how immigrants contributed to the rise of America and how they survived difficult times in The Roses: The Nuckolls Family, the Lyman Family, and One Hundred Fifty Immigrants Who Helped Shape America.
