Book Adventures of the First Settlers on the Oregon Or Columbia River 1810 1813

Download or read book Adventures of the First Settlers on the Oregon Or Columbia River 1810 1813 written by Alexander Ross and published by Westphalia Press. This book was released on 2018-09-26 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon after information from Lewis and Clark's expedition to chart the western region of the United States was shared, investors and explorers sought ways to capitalize on the information. In this work, Alexander Ross details the trials and tribulations of one such expedition, now known as the Astor Expedition. Ross was employed by John Jacob Astor's Pacific Fur Company, and this led to the founding Fort Astoria, an American outpost near the Columbia River. Although the title suggests that members of Astoria were "the first settlers" of the region, it fails to consider the numerous indigenous tribes Ross encountered and described in great detail. For example, this work includes an appendix of Chinook vocabulary, highlighting how extensive and advanced the indigenous populations were that had already settled in that region. The fort itself was populated by a variety of people, including French-Canadians, Scots, Hawaiians, Americans, and a variety of indigenous North American peoples, such as Iroquois. Due to the War of 1812, the fort was bought out by the North West Company, which renamed it Fort George.

Book excerpt: Illahe presents the history of white settlement in the most isolated part of southern Oregon's rugged Rogue River Canyon, starting in the 1850s, based on the words of the people who lived there.Author Kay Atwood creates a personal picture of what life was like in the remote canyon, drawing on first-person accounts from diaries, journals, and interviews she conducted with people who lived there in the early 20th and late 19th centuries -- people who were often descendants of the first white settlers and Native Americans from the region. Their stories recount hardships, dangerous river travel, deadly floods, extreme winters, constant isolation, and the self-sufficiency required to survive in this wild, beautiful place. In addition to artfully presenting the words of homesteaders, miners, and their descendants, Atwood has also gathered a treasure trove of approximately 160 photographs, supplemented by her own drawings and hand-drawn maps. For anyone who has enjoyed the Rogue River canyon and wondered about the history of this national Wild and Scenic Rivers corridor, as well as for historians and other readers interested in pioneer history, oral history, and the settlement of southern Oregon, Illahe offers a captivating portrait of a truly unique time and place.

Book Environment and Experience

Download or read book Environment and Experience written by Peter Boag and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2022-04-29 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pioneer battling with a hostile environment—whether it be arid land, drought, dust storms, dense forests, or harsh winters—is a staple of western American history. In this innovative, multi-disciplinary work, Peter Boag takes issue with the image of the settler against the frontier, arguing that settlers viewed their new surroundings positively and attempted to create communities in harmony with the landscape. Using Oregon's Calapooia Valley as a case study, Boag presents a history of both land and people that shows the process of change as settlers populated the land and turned it to their own uses. By combining local sources, ranging from letters and diaries to early maps and local histories, and drawing upon the methods of geography, natural history, and literary analysis, Boag has created a richly detailed grass-roots portrait of a frontier community. Most significantly, he analyzes the connections among environmental, cultural, and social changes in ways that illuminate the frontier experience throughout the American west. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact.
