Download or read book The Report Dubai 2014 written by Oxford Business Group and published by Oxford Business Group. This book was released on 2014-01-28 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many respects 2014 marked the transition from strong recovery to promising growth for Dubai. With many exciting projects in the pipeline, not least the hosting of Expo 2020, the emirate is continuing to build on its reputation as a dynamic and international centre for business. Already a regional and global centre for business and finance, Dubai’s reputation has been bolstered by the MSCI’s decision to upgrade the UAE from frontier to emerging market status in 2014, while the emirate’s successful Expo 2020 bid is expected to generate myriad opportunities for private investors across a range of sectors. Construction is thriving once again, driven in large part by strong retail sector growth, with various projects, including plans for the world’s largest mall, indicating that the sector will maintain its position as the emirate’s biggest GDP contributor moving forward. The transport and logistics framework is set for major expansion in the coming years as well, furthering cementing the emirate’s status as a leading transport and logistics hub not just regionally, but globally too. The continued development of Dubai’s retail and hospitality offerings, alongside the upgrades to its airports, should help to ensure robust growth in visitor numbers from both the region and further afield.

Download or read book Special Economic Zones in India written by Arpita Mukherjee and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-14 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines India’s ten years of experience developing Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and the performance of SEZs in the context of India’s growing international engagement, its endeavours to attract domestic and foreign investment in manufacturing and services and its aim to increase and diversify exports of goods and services. SEZs are industrial enclaves/clusters within a country that receive certain incentives and business facilitation benefits that are not generally available to the rest of the country. To facilitate private and foreign investment in SEZs, India introduced the SEZ policy in 2000, which was followed by the SEZ Act in 2005. After ten years under the Act, India now has one of the largest number of approved SEZs in the world and its SEZ policy remains heatedly debated, with a number of studies arguing both for and against it. Given this background, the book also identifies the challenges faced by SEZs in India and offers policy recommendations on how to make the SEZs an engine for India’s economic growth and development that can more effectively link the country’s manufacturing and services sectors to global value chains.

Download or read book Court Uncourt STA Law Firm written by STA Law Firm and published by STA Law Firm. This book was released on 2015-01-05 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the fact that the Arabic world marks Al-Hijra at the start of Muharram (the first month in the lunar Islamic calendar) and the Chinese community celebrate the “Spring Festival” at the turn of the Chinese lunisolar year in late January/early February, the Gregorian calendar’s New Year marks a new beginning for millions of individuals across the globe. The way in which we celebrate this varies from place to place – in parts of South America, the colour of one’s clothing is said to symbolize hopes and desires for the year to come (red for love, yellow for wealth), whereas in Spain it is believed that consumption of grapes on the strike of midnight will bring prosperity over the coming twelve month. The same may be said of wearing polka dots in the Philippines, and burning torches and fireballs are believed to drive out the impurities of the dying year at the Scottish festival Hogmanay. However the underlying principle is the same – it’s out with the old and in with the new. Yet some things never change. Like your trusty, innovative and high-quality legal publication, Court Uncourt. Marking the New Year with a new volume, our team of lawyers in UAE and globally at STA promise to continue in our efforts to bring you the latest legal news with our trademark bespoke twist. We wish you a blessed New Year and an enjoyable read.

Download or read book Dubai written by Syed Ali and published by Yale.ORIM. This book was released on 2010-05-28 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revealing portrait of the famously wealthy Persian Gulf city investigates the human cost of its miraculous rise to global prominence. In less than two decades, Dubai has transformed itself from an obscure territory of the United Arab Emirates into a global center for business, tourism, and luxury living. With astonishing skyscrapers and tax-free incomes, its rulers have made Dubai into a playground for the global elite while skillfully downplaying its systemic human rights abuses and suppression of dissent. It is a fascinating case study in light-speed urban development, massive immigration, and vertiginous inequality. In Dubai: Gilded Cage, sociologist Syed Ali delves beneath the dazzling surface to analyze how—and at what cost—Dubai has achieved its success. Ali brings alive a society rigidly divided between expatriate Westerners enjoying opulent lifestyles on short-term work visas, native Emiratis who are largely passive observers, and workers from the developing world who provide the manual labor and domestic service needed to keep the emirate running, often at great personal cost. “At last, a comprehensive expose of the economic and sexual exploitation that erected this utopia of greed. Syed Ali has seen the future in Dubai and it doesn’t work.” —Mike Davis, author of Planet of Slums
Download or read book Raising Capital on Arab Equity Markets written by Lu’ayy Minwer Al-Rimawi and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first book of its kind discusses in particular the role of investor protection as regards disclosure when issuers are offering securities to the public, with full descriptions of the securities markets and stock exchanges in seventeen Arab jurisdictions. In two interrelated parts it examines both the regional macroeconomic matrix and a detailed case study (that of Jordan) in order to analyse the development and characteristics of an Arab regulatory model. Among the important issues and topics arising in the course of the analysis are the following: relevance of international regulatory standards to Arab securities markets; mandatory versus voluntary securities disclosure; the fundamentals of the Islamic financial system, role of riba and gharar, nature and impact of Shari’a’s unquantifiable juridical risks on the modus operandi of Arab securities markets; macroeconomic adjustment policies and structural adjustment programmes in several Arab countries; recent economic and Arab capital markets impact in the wake of the ‘Arab Spring’; extent of different countries’ reliance on Shari’a as a constitutional source; constitutional challenges to the imposition of interest; the need for the positive law to compel securities disclosure under Shari’a; shareholders’ remedies when suing for fraud or negligent misstatements; liability for misleading or inaccurate disclosure (under the general law of the UK and a selected Arab jurisdiction); prospectus liability under the statutory regime of the UK and an Arab regulatory regime; bars to rescission of contract: Comparative UK and Shari'a aspects; and Arab, UK regulatory agencies' enforcement, prosecutorial, administrative and civil remedies. The author closely examines various instruments deployed for conveying securities disclosure and dissemination of information, and looks extensively at relevant rulings as enunciated by an Arab court of cassation. He then constructs a model of an effective securities disclosure regime in order to provide better investor protection for shareholders under Shari’a. 'Among the strengths of Dr Lu’ayy Minwer Al-Rimawi’s book is the fact that at all times he adopts a comparative approach, not only as between different Arab systems, but also with an appreciation of the legal position in the UK and the European Union and elsewhere’ [The Hon. Mr Justice Sir William Blair Q.C., High Court Judge in the UK and Chairman of the Qatar Financial Centre Regulatory Tribunal]. As the first in-depth discussion of the regulation of Arab capital markets in English, with an eye to international standards and the policy issues involved – and with attention focused on the central question of how the law can properly protect investors – this book will commend itself to all those with an interest in securities markets in the Arab world.
