Download or read book In Our Own Backyard written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1994-02-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume takes a fresh lookâ€"primarily from a technological perspectiveâ€"at the nation's "infrastructure": a collection of diverse modes that function as a system supporting a wide range of economic and social activities. Within an infrastructure system, operating and maintenance procedures, management practices, and development policies (i.e., the software) must work together with the facilities' hardware. This study has a strongly local perspective, drawing valuable information from workshops held in Phoenix, Cincinnati, and Boston. These workshops illustrated common elements of local experience that offer infrastructure practitioners, policymakers, and the public at large both understanding and guidance in the form of specific strategies that can lead toward "win-win" situations, where parties with potentially opposing interests seek a way to resolve infrastructure issues so that all parties gain. Local issues, combined across many regions, give infrastructure its strategic national significance. The book recommends specific principles that should be applied in national policy to support effective local infrastructure development and management.

Book Engineering and Construction for Sustainable Development in the 21st Century

Download or read book Engineering and Construction for Sustainable Development in the 21st Century written by Civil Engineering Research Foundation and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared by the Civil Engineering Research Foundation. This report identifies key engineering research and construction issues for the 21st century that support sustainable development. The report reflects the findings of a two-phase Delphi survey involving construction industry experts from more than 20 countries and was prepared to provide the technical context for an international research symposium that will be hosted by the Civil Engineering Research Foundation in Washington, D.C., on February 4-8, 1996. The intended audience includes worldwide representatives from government, academia and business involved in engineering and construction research. The report is organized around five focus areas: Management and Business Practices, Design Technology and Practices, Construction and Equipment, Materials and Systems, and Public and Government Policy. A team of international experts from engineering and construction disciplines author the five papers comprising this report. Each paper covers research needs and barriers to implementation of new technologies and practices. The papers explore opportunities for international cooperation, present case studies of successful research efforts and offer preliminary recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of research in their respective areas. The papers are preceded by an introduction that address the conceptual links among the papers within the context of sustainable development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First released in the Spring of 1999, How People Learn has been expanded to show how the theories and insights from the original book can translate into actions and practice, now making a real connection between classroom activities and learning behavior. This edition includes far-reaching suggestions for research that could increase the impact that classroom teaching has on actual learning. Like the original edition, this book offers exciting new research about the mind and the brain that provides answers to a number of compelling questions. When do infants begin to learn? How do experts learn and how is this different from non-experts? What can teachers and schools do-with curricula, classroom settings, and teaching methodsâ€"to help children learn most effectively? New evidence from many branches of science has significantly added to our understanding of what it means to know, from the neural processes that occur during learning to the influence of culture on what people see and absorb. How People Learn examines these findings and their implications for what we teach, how we teach it, and how we assess what our children learn. The book uses exemplary teaching to illustrate how approaches based on what we now know result in in-depth learning. This new knowledge calls into question concepts and practices firmly entrenched in our current education system. Topics include: How learning actually changes the physical structure of the brain. How existing knowledge affects what people notice and how they learn. What the thought processes of experts tell us about how to teach. The amazing learning potential of infants. The relationship of classroom learning and everyday settings of community and workplace. Learning needs and opportunities for teachers. A realistic look at the role of technology in education.

Book Federal Public Works Infrastructure R D

Download or read book Federal Public Works Infrastructure R D written by Civil Engineering Research Foundation and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared by the Civil Engineering Research Foundation. This report provides an analysis of the federal role in public works infrastructure research and development; it is one of a series of special studies commissioned by the U.S. Corps of Engineers under a Congressional directive. To perform this analysis, CERF contacted more than a dozen federal agencies and coordinated with the Federal Laboratory Consortium to obtain data from 257 federal laboratories. The objective of the analysis was to establish baseline information regarding the federal government's role in public works infrastructure (PWI) research and development (R&D). What, where, and how PWI R&D is accomplished by the federal government is the focus of this analysis. After providing background information and defining public works infrastructure, the report provides an overview of responses collected from a variety of government agencies concerning their perceived role in PWI R&D. As part of the effort to determine whether federal PWI R&D meets national public works infrastructure needs, a typical federal R&D program life-cycle is synopsized to include an explanation of the role of contributing organizations. Next, the report quantifies the federal role in public works infrastructure R&D. The components of this quantification include estimates of federal funding PWI R&D, where such R&D is accomplished, the types of R&D performed, and technical transfer mechanisms. Funding trends for the various infrastructure components are also addressed. Findings are documented in both tabular and graphic form. Finally, to place federal PWI R&D into a worldwide perspective, the report compares the United State's PWI R&D investment with other industrially advanced nations.
