Book Setting a Generator Protective Digital Relay

Download or read book Setting a Generator Protective Digital Relay written by James Flanagan and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-31 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relay protection is a mixture of art and science. Engineers, utilities and companies all have different philosophies about generator protection. This book works through setting a multifunction digital relay for a specific generator from beginning to end. The book also demonstrates PRC compliance. Many books have been written on the theory, principles and application of generator protective relaying. Therefore, the theory in this book is very concise and to the point.

Book Protective Relaying for Power Generation Systems

Download or read book Protective Relaying for Power Generation Systems written by Donald Reimert and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power outages have considerable social and economic impacts, and effective protection schemes are crucial to avoiding them. While most textbooks focus on the transmission and distribution aspects of protective relays, Protective Relaying for Power Generation Systems is the first to focus on protection of motors and generators from a power generation perspective. It also includes workbook constructions that allow students to perform protection-related calculations in Mathcad® and Excel®. This text provides both a general overview and in-depth discussion of each topic, making it easy to tailor the material to students' needs. It also covers topics not found in other texts on the subject, including detailed time decrement generator fault calculations and minimum excitation limit. The author clearly explains the potential for damage and damaging mechanisms related to each protection function and includes thorough derivations of complex system interactions. Such derivations underlie the various rule-of-thumb setting criteria, provide insight into why the rules-of-thumb work and when they are not appropriate, and are useful for post-incident analysis. The book's flexible approach combines theoretical discussions with example settings that offer quick how-to information. Protective Relaying for Power Generation Systems integrates fundamental knowledge with practical tools to ensure students have a thorough understanding of protection schemes and issues that arise during or after abnormal operation.

Book Calculations of Protective Relay Settings for a Unit Generator Following Catastrophic Failure

Download or read book Calculations of Protective Relay Settings for a Unit Generator Following Catastrophic Failure written by Jaime Anthony Ybarra and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: After a catastrophic failure of a unit generator system the major components may need to be replaced. Many times exact replacement of the failed or damaged components may not be possible. In such a case components with electrical characteristics as close to the original may be used. Therefore new protective relay settings must be calculated. In this thesis, we will examine a type of generator protection relays, evaluate new settings and develop a one-line diagram for a 25 MVA generator system. A methodology for the development of a safe and reliable protections scheme for a unit generator system is also presented.

Book Design of a New Digital Relaying Algorithm for a Generator Protection Against Loss of Field

Download or read book Design of a New Digital Relaying Algorithm for a Generator Protection Against Loss of Field written by Mahmud Hasen Musa and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this thesis is to develop a new digital-relaying algorithm for theprotection of the generator in case of loss of its field current. In order to establish this goal the following steps are followed:-Firstly a study of the main protection requirements of an electric generator was done in order to form a common understanding about the most essential protection devices used for this purpose. Loss of field protection of asynchronous generator was given more attention, with special concentration onthe disadvantages of the conventional relaying method based on the applicationof a mho distance relay.-Secondly a study of the operational characteristics of the generator during steady and transient states were done. These studies focus on the reactive power output from the generator, and its characteristics during loss of field.-Thirdly attention is directed to the study of the traditional method used to protect.generators in case of loss of field with concentration on its disadvantages inorder to overcome them in the planned new relaying algorithm. The traditionalmethod uses an offset mho distance relay , which measures the impedance of thegenerator seen at its terminals and compares it to the setting values of the relay .-Then the new algorithm based on the direction of the reactive power flowthrough the generator was introduced. This algorithm measures the movingaverage of the total reactive power output of the generator over a complete cycle of the system frequency and compares it to its setting values.-In the last section a computer simulation study was performed on a representative power system to test the response of this new algorithm for actual loss of field, and for other abnormal operating conditions.-, Finally a collection of conclusions and suggested recommendations were given at the end of this thesis.

Coverage also includes different AC fault types, a detailed theoretical analysis of fault and protection strategy in AC fault, and the different types of fault detection algorithms to maintain power system reliability.

Book Improving Backup Protection Using Sampled Values for Generating Stations

Download or read book Improving Backup Protection Using Sampled Values for Generating Stations written by Sruthi Chilukuri and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaluation of relay misoperations provides an opportunity to improve the design of backup protection schemes. Existing generator station backup protection schemes use distance protection (21) or voltage controlled/restrained overcurrent protection (51V) elements for clearing phase faults that are not cleared by either line protection or generator protection. Many schemes also use transformer ground overcurrent protection (51NG) for backup protection for ground faults on the system. Since generator protection can respond to faults with fault resistance accurately only when there is no remote infeed from the other terminals, designing a secure backup protection for a generating station during remote infeed conditions is a challenge. Apart from the remote infeed, fast response of automatic excitation controllers also affects the current seen by the generator protection relay. Considering these effects, different vendors have different approaches for setting the 21 element. In order to analyze these recommendations, this thesis studies the performance of backup protection schemes applied at a thermal power station connected through a breaker and half scheme using Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) simulations. This thesis proposes a new approach to enhance the performance and coverage of backup protection schemes by using the IEC 61850 standard by using measurements from multiple VT locations in the same relay to enhance protection security.. In addition to that, this thesis also address the challenges associated with the existing generator breaker failure protection schemes based on breaker auxiliary contacts and undercurrent elements and proposes a solution using a synchronism check element which uses sampled values. These two techniques can be used in existing generating station protection schemes to improve the reliability and security of these schemes.
