Book Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative

Download or read book Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-01-15 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to see deeply affects how human beings perceive and interpret the world around them. For most people, eyesight is part of everyday communication, social activities, educational and professional pursuits, the care of others, and the maintenance of personal health, independence, and mobility. Functioning eyes and vision system can reduce an adult's risk of chronic health conditions, death, falls and injuries, social isolation, depression, and other psychological problems. In children, properly maintained eye and vision health contributes to a child's social development, academic achievement, and better health across the lifespan. The public generally recognizes its reliance on sight and fears its loss, but emphasis on eye and vision health, in general, has not been integrated into daily life to the same extent as other health promotion activities, such as teeth brushing; hand washing; physical and mental exercise; and various injury prevention behaviors. A larger population health approach is needed to engage a wide range of stakeholders in coordinated efforts that can sustain the scope of behavior change. The shaping of socioeconomic environments can eventually lead to new social norms that promote eye and vision health. Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative: Vision for Tomorrow proposes a new population-centered framework to guide action and coordination among various, and sometimes competing, stakeholders in pursuit of improved eye and vision health and health equity in the United States. Building on the momentum of previous public health efforts, this report also introduces a model for action that highlights different levels of prevention activities across a range of stakeholders and provides specific examples of how population health strategies can be translated into cohesive areas for action at federal, state, and local levels.

Book excerpt: While the business aspect of an optometrist's practice may come second to patient care, optometrists today are faced with greater competition for new patients and income. Book Build Your Own Medical Optometry Practice Part 1 Medical Knowledge Second Edition

Download or read book Build Your Own Medical Optometry Practice Part 1 Medical Knowledge Second Edition written by Jeffrey Sedgewick, O.D., M.D. and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-02-03 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Optometrists don't perform medical eye services, certainly not exclusively. You can develop a successful practice while providing a much needed service by bucking this trend. Jeffrey Sedgewick, O.D., M.D. spent 4 years as a practicing Optometrist prior to entering medical school. While practicing as an Optometrist and as an Ophthalmologist, he has seen many examples of poor medical care by Optometrists, himself included. He is convinced that it doesn't have to be this way. He believes Optometrists who start their own Medical Optometry Practice can fill an increasingly important function, but they need more knowledge and clinical experience, which he seeks to provide in this textbook, in his web site www.theodmdconsultinggroup.com, in future courses and as a consultant to your Medical Optometry Practice.

Book The Value Driven Eye Care Game

Download or read book The Value Driven Eye Care Game written by Alistair L. Jackson M.ED F.A.A.O. and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-11-06 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the establishment of optometry as the primary eye care profession, and significant reforms under way in health care, the opportunity exists now to add value to an independent eye care practice for both the doctor and the patient. The favorable geographic distribution of optometrists in rural and urban locations lends well to the evolving trends of health care in America. Ease of access to care without having to travel long distances lends well to the economics for patients. The difficulty for the independent practice is the paradigm shift required on several levels: from paper records to electronic; from an optical focus to medical, from individual and episodic care to team-based and coordinated care. Add to this the concomitant increase in the complexity of billing and coding and we have a whole new game on our hands, a survival game. The exact strategy to make this shift adeptly does not exist. Vision without execution is hallucination. This guide will serve as a basis for applying some organizational sense to the adventure of creating a new medical model for forward-thinking optometric practices.
