Book Support Provision to Sexual Assault Survivors in Hospital Emergency Departments

Download or read book Support Provision to Sexual Assault Survivors in Hospital Emergency Departments written by Samantha D. Outcalt and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although much research has been devoted to sexual assault survivors' experiences of receiving negative reactions (e.g., victim blame) from their support network and service providers, few studies have examined the support provider's experience during interactions with survivors. Some research has identified rape myth acceptance as a potential barrier to effective support provision. Three research questions guided the current study: Would rape myth acceptance function as a barrier among other samples of support providers? What other barriers interfere with support provision? What differences emerge between provider and survivor experiences of the same interaction? The current study was conducted in two phases to survey nurses and patients about their experiences in the emergency department (ED) when a sexual assault survivor presents for medical care immediately following an assault. Phase One assessed ED nurses' ( N = 54) past support interactions with sexual assault survivors. Five variables were measured as potential predictors: rape myth acceptance, psychological distress, training and experience specific to sexual assault, and personal history of sexual victimization. Low response rate for Phase Two precluded the planned dyadic analyses of nurses' and patients' reports of the same interaction. Hypotheses were largely unsupported; nurses reported providing positive social reactions more frequently than negative, and expected predictors were not associated with provision of social reactions. Qualitative data and exploratory analyses demonstrate a richer description of nurses' experiences. Recruitment strategies and social desirability effects are discussed among possible limiting factors.

Book Sexual Assault Victims in the Emergency Room

Download or read book Sexual Assault Victims in the Emergency Room written by Stephanie J. Sphar and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: The International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) has declared violence an international public health issue. Violence included "intentional and unintentional injury found in individuals who seek health care following acts of...intimate partner violence (IPV),... (and) rapes or sexual assaults...". The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) defined sexual assault as "penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim". The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey for the United States by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated, "More than one-quarter of women and approximately 1 in 9 men have experienced some form of unwanted sexual contact in their lifetime". EBP Framework: This quality improvement project used the Rosswurm-Larrabee Model for Evidence-Based Practice Change and Kurt Lewin's change theory. Methods: This project's main objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational intervention focused on the social workers in a local emergency department (ED). Providers and nurses int he ED were not educated. The project manager included the administration of the Illinois Rape Myth Acceptance (IRMA) scale, the introduction of the "Emergency Deparment SANE Worksheet for Acute Sexual Assault" developed by the hospital system, and a flowsheet on when to call a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE). Once Internal Review Board (IRB) approval was obtained, an in-service was provided to social workers in a local ED. Participants were comprised of a convenience sample of (n=9) ED social workers. A pre-survey and post-survey data collection design was used to measure the project outcomes. Findings/Results: This project measured the use of the "Emergency Department SANE Worksheet for Acute Sexual Assault" with social workers who provide care in an ED setting for the victims of sexual assault. It also evaluated the social worker's internal bias toward a victim of sexual assault. The project results suggested that using the reporting tool could result in consistent care for the victim throughout the ED in this healthcare system. Conclusion/Recommendations: The ED is often where a victim of sexual assault will first seek care. The project manager developed and intervention providing education regarding a standardized worksheet developed and used through the hospital system for sexual assault victims in the ED that would improve care. The project also served to identify internal bias in social workers will be better able to help the sexual assault victim successfully navigate the ED system.

Book Emergency Department Providers Treatment of Sexual Assault Victims

Download or read book Emergency Department Providers Treatment of Sexual Assault Victims written by Krystel Josephene Tossone and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose: The study sought to address the disparity of sexual assault service delivery in emergency departments using a two part sequential mixed methods study with physicians and nurses. Methods: The first part of the study employed retrospective medical chart review (n = 112) at two ED sites within an Akron, Ohio health system. The second part of the study employed semi-structured open-ended interviewing with 13 ED providers who treated at least two sexual assault patients during the chart review year. Results: The highest offered service is the sexual assault forensic examination (92.7% of patients). The lowest offered service is HIV PEP (0 patients). On average, few providers offered STD testing, pregnancy testing, and HIV testing more than 50% of the time. Providers believed they offered services more often than chart review reported. Reasons for not offering HIV PEP include the cost of HIV PEP to the patient, the lack of patient adherence to the medication due to side effects, and the low risk of contracting HIV. A major sub-theme focused on the perceived impact of the loss of the SANE program two years prior. Generally there is little pattern among themes by service delivery performance. Conclusion: Compared to other studies, compliance with suggested treatment guidelines is lower in some service delivery behaviors. There are perceived multiple levels of impact in service delivery for SA patients. Many providers perceive the loss of the SANE program as detrimentally impactful to service delivery quality. Recommendations for future research and improvements to the current system of treatment are discussed.

Book Education on the Management of Sexual Assault Victims for Emergency Department Nurses Increasing Nursing Knowledge and Decreasing Rape Myth Acceptance

Download or read book Education on the Management of Sexual Assault Victims for Emergency Department Nurses Increasing Nursing Knowledge and Decreasing Rape Myth Acceptance written by Lauralie Christianna Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers have found that interactions with first responders may profoundly affect the recovery of sexual assault patients. For those patients who seek medical help, the Emergency Department often becomes the first point of contact. Evidence indicates superior outcomes for victims when they are treated by trained Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners or other similarly trained forensic examiners. Many Emergency Departments do not have these specially trained providers on staff. Despite The Joint Commission mandate that emergency departments have policies and practices for the management of victims of sexual assault; training and/or provisions for dealing with these cases is not uniform and frequently insufficient. Emergency nurses who have not been officially trained for the management of sexual assault victims face obstacles providing appropriate and compassionate care. These obstacles include lack of clinical knowledge as well as acceptance of rape myths. Studies have shown that increased knowledge and decreased rape myth acceptance will improve victims' outcomes. After receiving education for emergency nurses in hospitals that do not offer sexual assault services to address these issues; nurses showed increased clinical knowledge and decreased rape myth acceptance.

Book Recovering From Rape

Download or read book Recovering From Rape written by Linda E. Ledray and published by Holt Paperbacks. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From clinical psychologist Linda E. Ledray, Recovering from Rape is a comprehensive handbook offering emotional support and practical guidance to survivors and their loved ones in coping and overcoming the trauma of rape. If you have been sexually assaulted, you are probably experiencing a mix of fear, anger, and depression. If you are a relative, friend, or lover of someone who has been assaulted, you too may be deeply affected by the incident and by the survivor’s reaction to it. However, working together, survivors and their loved ones can recover and may even be able to turn the recovery into an opportunity for positive change and growth. The experiences of survivors recounted throughout this book reassure readers that others have pulled through. Dr. Ledray helps survivors realize that no matter what they did—wore a low-cut blouse, accepted a ride from a stranger, invited an acquaintance home—they did not deserve to be raped. She guides them from guilt or disbelief through bitterness and despair to the decision to take back control of their lives. In addition, this comprehensive handbook explains what to expect at the police station, at the hospital, and, if necessary, in court. It covers such health issues as incest, STD treatments, and post-traumatic stress disorder, and legal information on prosecution and bail, DNA testing, and rape law. An essential resource, Recovering from Rape helps readers learn the most effective ways of dealing with their feelings immediately following an assault, during the subsequent few months, and beyond.

Download or read book Emergency Care for Children written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children represent a special challenge for emergency care providers, because they have unique medical needs in comparison to adults. For decades, policy makers and providers have recognized the special needs of children, but the system has been slow to develop an adequate response to their needs. This is in part due to inadequacies within the broader emergency care system. Emergency Care for Children examines the challenges associated with the provision of emergency services to children and families and evaluates progress since the publication of the Institute of Medicine report Emergency Medical Services for Children (1993), the first comprehensive look at pediatric emergency care in the United States. This new book offers an analysis of: • The role of pediatric emergency services as an integrated component of the overall health system. • System-wide pediatric emergency care planning, preparedness, coordination, and funding. • Pediatric training in professional education. • Research in pediatric emergency care. Emergency Care for Children is one of three books in the Future of Emergency Care series. This book will be of particular interest to emergency health care providers, professional organizations, and policy makers looking to address the pediatric deficiencies within their emergency care systems.
