Book excerpt: Service provisioning in ad hoc networks is challenging given the difficulties of communicating over a wireless channel and the potential heterogeneity and mobility of the devices that form the network. Service placement is the process of selecting an optimal set of nodes to host the implementation of a service in light of a given service demand and network topology. The key advantage of active service placement in ad hoc networks is that it allows for the service configuration to be adapted continuously at run time. Service Placement in Ad Hoc Networks proposes the SPi service placement framework as a novel approach to service placement in ad hoc networks. The SPi framework takes advantage of the interdependencies between service placement, service discovery and the routing of service requests to minimize signaling overhead. The work also proposes the Graph Cost / Single Instance and the Graph Cost / Multiple Instances placement algorithms.

Book excerpt: Ad hoc networks, which include a variety of autonomous networks for specific purposes, promise a broad range of civilian, commercial, and military applications. These networks were originally envisioned as collections of autonomous mobile or stationary nodes that dynamically auto-configure themselves into a wireless network without relying on any existing network infrastructure or centralized administration. With the significant advances in the last decade, the concept of ad hoc networks now covers an even broader scope, referring to the many types of autonomous wireless networks designed and deployed for a specific task or function, such as wireless sensor networks, vehicular networks, home networks, and so on. In contrast to the traditional wireless networking paradigm, such networks are all characterized by sporadic connections, highly error-prone communications, distributed autonomous operation, and fragile multi-hop relay paths. The new wireless networking paradigm necessitates reexamination of many established concepts and protocols, and calls for developing a new understanding of fundamental problems such as interference, mobility, connectivity, capacity, and security, among others. While it is essential to advance theoretical research on fundamental and practical research on efficient policies, algorithms and protocols, it is also critical to develop useful applications, experimental prototypes, and real-world deployments to achieve an immediate impact on society for the success of this wireless networking paradigm.

The workshop was organized by Fra- hofer FOKUS with the help of partners of the EU-funded Autonomic Com- nication Coordination Action — IST-6475 (ACCA), and under technical sp- sorship of IFIP WG6. 6 — Management of Networks and Distributed Systems. The purpose of this workshop was to discuss Autonomic Communication—a new communication paradigm to assist the design of the next-generation n- works. WAC 2004 was explicitly focused on the principles that help to achieve purposeful behavior on top of self-organization (self-management, self-healing, self-awareness, etc. ). The workshop intended to derive these common principles from submissions that study network element’s autonomic behavior exposed by innovative (cross-layer optimized, context-aware, and securely programmable) protocol stack (or its middleware emulations) in its interaction with numerous, often dynamic network groups and communities. The goals were to understand how autonomic behaviors are learned, in?uenced or changed, and how, in turn, these a?ect other elements, groups and the network. The highly interactive and exploratory nature of WAC 2004 de?ned its format — six main sessions grouped in three blocks, each block followed by a panel with all speakers of the previous block as panellists and session chairs as panel moderators. The?rstpanelaimedtohighlightthemainprinciplesguidingresearchinal- rithms,protocolsandmiddleware;thesecondpanelinvestigatedgrandchallenges of network and service composition; the third panel had to answer the question “HowDoestheAutonomicNetworkInteractwiththeKnowledgePlane?”. Panel reports were compiled by panel moderators and conclude this volume.

After Toronto, Sydney and Nara, the conference has now returned to Europe. Pervasiveis one of the most important conferences in the area of pervasive and ubiquitous computing. Asinthepreviousyear,wehadtwocategoriesoftechnicalpapers:FullPapers and Notes. Pervasive attracted 157 valid submissions, from which the Technical Program Committee (TPC) accepted 24 full papers and one note, resulting in an overall acceptance rate of 16%. The submissions included 628 authors from 27 countries representing all the continents (except Antarctica). As we can see from these ?gures, Pervasive is a truly global highly competitive conference. A major conference such as Pervasive requires a rigorous and objective p- cess for selecting papers. This starts with the selection of a high-quality TPC. We were fortunate to be able to draw on the wisdom and experience of our 28 TPC members, from the most prestigious universities and research labs in - rope, North America, and Asia. This committee was aided by the input of no less than 238 external reviewers chosen on the basis of their domain knowledge and relevance to pervasive computing. The papers were selected using a double-blind review, with four peer reviews perpaper,adiscussionphaseamongthereviewers,andadiscussionofthepapers in the TPC meeting, which was held in Palo Alto during December 12-13, 2009. We thank Nokia Research Center for hosting the meeting.
