Also the late Roi Leeland Hopkins who inspired him to write about church music because of his phrase”I could write a book about the church music departments in the black church. The artist holds a B.S. degree and M.Ed. (Educational Administration)degree from Texas Southern University. While attending Texas Southern University Mr. Bell studied piano with Mrs. Thelma O. Bell and studied voice with Mrs. Ruth Schmoll for three years. Mr. Bell successfully attended the Harvard Principal Academy Institute in 1993. Mr. Bell studied church music at University of Houston in the mid 1990’s. In 2011 Mr. Bell became a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars- Phi Theta Kappa chapter at Houston Community College while pursuing a music degree at Texas Southern University. Mr. Bell sang with the Houston Symphnoy Chorale for two seasons under the direction of Mrs. Virginia Babikian, and Dr. Charles Hauseman during the early 1990’s. Mr. Bell taught for over twenty-five and has been an elementary classroom teacher, music teacher, Chapter I Coordinator, Assistant Principal and Principal all in the Houston Independent School District. Currently is Director of Bel-Lin's Music Studio in Houston, Texas. Mr. Bell’s avocation and passion for church music has been around four decades where he has served in the Houston and neighboring communities, and frequently serves as musical consultant for local, state and regional religious and civic organizations. He also is the author of an semi-autobiography about growing up in Houston entitled Kid’s Can’t Be Kids Anymore. He has recorded two CD recordings of inspirational music. He has composed one major religious easter cantata work entitled ‘Hear The Word of The Lord' premeire ecumenical performance in 1987 at the Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church-Houston, Texas and in 1992 at the Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church-Houston. He also is the composer of many songs sung in the black worship service. His favorite and most well-liked is The Lord Is My Shepherd. He has sung with the Houston Symphony Chorale-Chorus under the direction of the late Virgina Babikian and Dr. Charles Hauseman. He received the National Reading is Fundamental Award...Leaders in Literacy Award in 1994 in Houston, Texas. Those who know the author have often described him as being very talented, inquisitive, very ambitious, a computer whiz-enthuiast, an outgoing fellow, very diligent, and energetic. He always wears an incesasant smile, is quite humorous, and is always willing to help others whenever he can. He is very versatile. Mrs. Elnoir Walton of Houston, Texas, says of Mr. Bell, "the author presents himself as a Christian person who has the love of God in him and reflects this in his conversation and actions. He has a pleasing personality that everyone who is around him enjoys." The author is married to the former Linda Joyce Fuller of Houston, Texas, and is the father of RaKeisha Monet’(Son-Inlaw Cedric) and John (II)Jr.. They reside in Southeast Houston. Mr. Bell enjoys several hobbies for both relaxation and inspiration; they are oil painting, cooking, reading, socializing, and traveling. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sabbath Hymn and Tune Book, for the Service of Song in the House of the Lord Two principal methods have prevailed, to a greater or less degree, in the Service Of Song in Chris tian worship; that of the whole Congregation, and that of a select Choir. The Congregational was the primitive method, and the only one known in the earlier history of the Church. The method of sing ing by a choir came into the Church at a later period, with wealth, power, and worldly greatness, and it has been her attendant rather in temporal prosperity, than in poverty and adversity. At the time of the Reformation, Congregational Singing had become extinct, and the more artistic manner of choirs, consisting mostly Of an inferior order of the clergy, singing in a language unknown to the people, had taken its place. Luther, Calvin, Knox, and others, took early measures to rescue the singing exercises in public worship from the hands of the clergy, and to reinstate it as an exercise for the people. As the abuses of the Romish church had led to the rejection of chanting (the primitive form of Church Song) the Psalms were translated, or hymns were written in a stanzaic form, and adapted to a simple but dignified form of melody, with special reference to the capabilities of the peo ple. The union of the whole assembly in the exercise was regarded as essential. Other liturgical forms were rejected; but this new one of a metrical Psalmody, for the people's simultaneous utterance of praise and prayer, was received with great favor, and almost universally practiced. It was no attempt on the part Of the Reformers to introduce an artistic manner of song, but, on the contrary, a very plain one, a highway of Psalmody, in which the wayfaring man, though a fool, should not err. The Congregational method, thus restored to the churches, was brought to this country by the Prot estant Fathers. It continued to be their only method for about a century and a half. It is not sur prising that during this period, amidst the deprivations which the new settlements experienced, atten tion to song should have been neglected, nor that, neglected by generation after generation, the ability for it should have been well nigh lost. In the early part of the last century the very low con dition Of the singing in public worship began to attract the attention of some of the friends of religion, and measures were taken by a few of the leading clergymen and others for reform. Hitherto all the singing in the American churches had been unisonous, the melody only having been sung; but in 1720 a book of tunes in three parts, Cantus, Medius and Basus, was published by Rev. Thomas Walter. The harmonizing of the tunes in parts undoubtedly grew out of the fact that the more elaborate service of choirs had always taken that form both in the Lutheran and the English church. In the Protestant churches Of Europe generally, metrical Psalmody continues to this day to be sung, as it was originally, in unison, and it is at least doubtful whether parts in harmony for the choir and unison for the congregation, would not still be the best arrangement for Church Song. This new arrangement Of tunes in parts led to 'the formation of choirs. At first, they were introduced only as helps to Congregational Singing, but this gradually yielded, as it had done before, and the new method advanced with sure and steady progress, until towards the close of the last century it had become the almost exclusive method of Church Song. Over-emphasis on clergy is redressed by additional laity, males by females, and "in-church" activities by contributions well beyond the workings of institutional agendas. These almost daily commemorations occupy over 600 of the book's 785 pages, by far the lion's share of its content. Remaining sections address: principles of revision and guides for future revision; liturgical propers for seasons (Advent/Christmas, Lent, and Easter); and new propers for a miscellany of propers usable with individuals (or events) not officially listed in the formal calendar. Two cycles of propers for daily Eucharist are also included, one covering a six week period, the other a two year cycle.
