The scope was wide, ranging from molecular biology through in vitro and in vivo pharmacology to new drug tools and their clinical signifi cance. There were three invited review lectures, by J. M. Palacios, D. I. Wallis and A. Kaumann, and S. Peroutka gave the first Serotonin Club Irvine H. Page Lecture. The rest of the oral programme was put together by the Scientific Organizing Committee based on volunteered research contributions. The invited review lecturers, the platform speak ers and selected poster contributors were invited to write up their contributions for inclusion in this volume. Most complied and this book is the result of their efforts. When instructing the authors prior to the meeting, we emphasized that selected new data should be put in the context of the literature findings. In this way we hoped to achieve topicality yet preserve the review perspective which facilitates its appreciation by the non-special ist. It was truly a pleasure to read the interesting papers which resulted and to prepare them for publication. We believe they convey to a remarkable degree the spirit of what was generally felt to be a highly stimulating exchange of information on matters serotonergic which took place in Basel last July.

Book excerpt: Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, often cited as 5-HT) is one of the major excitatory neurotransmitter, and the serotonergic system is one of the best studied and understood transmitter systems. It is crucially involved in the organization of virtually all behaviours and in the regulation of emotion and mood. Alterations in the serotonergic system, induced by e.g. learning or pathological processes, underlie behavioural plasticity and changes in mood, which can finally results in abnormal behaviour and psychiatric conditions. Not surprisingly, the serotonergic system and its functional components appear to be targets for a multitude of pharmacological treatments - examples of very successful drugs targeting the serotoninergic system include Prozac and Zoloft. The last decades of research have not only fundamentally expanded our view on serotonin but also revealed in much more detail an astonishing complexity of this system, which comprises a multitude of receptors and signalling pathways. A detailed view on its role in basal, but also complex, behaviours emerged, and, was presented in a number of single review articles. Although much is known now, the serotonergic system is still a fast growing field of research contributing to our present understanding of the brains function during normal and disturbed behaviour. This handbook aims towards a detailed and comprehensive overview over the many facets of behavioural serotonin research. As such, it will provide the most up to date and thorough reading concerning the serotonergic systems control of behaviour and mood in animals and humans. Book excerpt: Serotonin (5-HT) was isolated and chemically characterized nearly four decades ago, and is now generally accepted to function as a neurotransmitter and neuromodulatory agent. Early research focused on the measurement of concentrations, synthesis, and metabolism of 5-HT, and only recently has the focus shifted to characterization of 5-HT receptors. Gaddum and Picarelli first sug gested in 1957 that the effect of 5-HT in the guinea pig ileum is mediated by two pharmacologically distinguishable receptors; however, the possibility of dual5-HT receptors was not explored systematically or successfully until the past decade. It is now clear that more, perhaps many more, subclasses of 5-HT receptors exist. The purpose of this book is to provide an up-to-date report on 5-HT receptors. This is a difficult task considering the astonishing speed at which research in this field is expanding. As the first of what we can expect to be a steady stream of monographs focusing on 5-HT receptors, the book confirms that we are in an exciting time in the history of 5-HT. For those of us who have been work ing on 5-HT for many years, our dream of equal progress and recognition with the more extensively studied catecholamines is finally being realized. We now have a Serotonin Club that held its first international scientific meeting in 1987, and several more international meetings are in the planning stages.

The organiz ing committees felt at the onset that the field of serotonin research had grown so rapidly that it would be impossible to cover every aspect of it in individual symposia. Thus it was felt that certain areas of research had to be omitted due to time constraints, and we extend an apology to the researchers in areas not included in these proceedings. Rather it was hoped to provide a balance overview of the field, starting with the anatomy of serotonergic systems and proceeding to the level of the serotonergic receptors at the cell membrane, and then inside the neuron to discuss the regulation of serotonin bisynthesis and integration within indole mine systems. The functional aspects of serotonergic transmission focused on the emerging role of this amine in the processing of nociceptive information, singly or in tandem with other neurotran smitters or neuromodulators. A separate symposium dealt with a variety of animal models suitable for the analysis of the role of serotonin in behavior, and finally led to the evaluation of serotonin metabolism in the study of abnormal human behavior. The editors would like to dedicate these proceedings on /Serotonin - Current Aspects of Neurochemistry and Function/ to two pioneers in this field, Dr. Irving Page and Dr. Maurice Rapport.
