Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book-the fourth volume of a series on Can cer Markers-is intended to provide an updated "status report" on today's use of cancer markers in the diagnosis and monitoring of can cer, with an emphasis on cancer markers detected in the serum. It has been 7 years since the publication of the last volume in this series. The 1980, 1982, and 1985 volumes covered the development of cancer markers, not only in their roles of unraveling the basic biology of can cer, but also as increasingly important players in the management of patients with cancer. During the last 7 years we have seen the applica tion of a number of markers identified by monoclonal antibodies, as well as the beginnings of the use of genetic markers defined by mo lecular probes. Measurements of oncogenes in tissues or cells prom ise many applications for the future, but as yet, these genes have not shown to be useful as serum markers of cancer. The commercial interest in serum markers for cancer, particu larly for the diagnosis and monitoring of tumor patients, is indicated in Chapter 24 by Owen, where the total worldwide market for cancer markers is projected to increase from $148 million in 1988 to $232 million in 1993. The degree of research interest in cancer markers is reflected in the fact that in 1988 a separate category for tumor mark ers was added to Index Medicus.

Book Histological and Serological Tumor Markers and Gene Expression and Their Clinical Usefulness in Cancers

Download or read book Histological and Serological Tumor Markers and Gene Expression and Their Clinical Usefulness in Cancers written by Dan Hellberg and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number of commercially available antibodies for the detection of biological markers, tumor markers, by immunohistochemistry or serological methods in cancer are rapidly increasing. Results in different studies are often contradictory and the usefulness of single tumor markers in different cancer types is unclear. An increasing number of studies on genetic "fingerprints" are being reported. This book represents the most comprehensive and up-to-date publication on histological and serological tumor markers, also commenting recent genetic studies. Sixteen major cancer types and an additional chapter on HIV-related cancers are reviewed by more than 40 authors. These are cancer of the breast, lung, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, colon, rectum, anus, skin, brain, prostate, penis, ovary, uterus, uterine cervix and HIV-related cancers. The authors are active and respected researchers, experts in their fields. Tumor markers will be evaluated for clinical usefulness in diagnostics, prognosis and therapy. Definitive present usefulness is given for the specific cancer types and their purpose of use. Tumor markers that are still being evaluated but of possible future clinical importance are discussed. The index will make it easy to find a particular tumor marker and compare studies on different cancer types. The book is meant to inspire clinical and laboratory management as well as planning research and evaluation of results. Thus, oncologists, pathologists and other physicians who are involved in patients with cancer will find it useful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to diagnose cancer by simple measurement of a serum or tissue' 'marker" has been a goal of medical science for many years. There is ample evidence that tumor cells are different from normal cells and pro duce substances that can be detected by currently available immuno chemical or biochemical methods. These "cancer markers" may be se creted proteins, enzymes, hormones, fetal serum components, monoclonal immunoglobulins, cell surface components, or cytoplasmic constituents. The purpose of this book is to present the current status of our knowledge of such cancer markers. The first tumor marker identified by laboratory means was Bence Jones protein. In a series of lectures delivered to the Royal College of Phy sicians in London in 1846, Dr. H. Bence Jones described studies on a urine sample sent to him with the following note: "Dear Dr. Jones-The tube contains urine of very high specific gravity. When boiled it becomes slightly opaque . . . . etc. " Dr. Jones found that heating of the urine after addition of nitric acid resulted in formation of a heavy precipitate; acid ad dition may have been required to bring the urine to pH 4-6 at which Bence Jones proteins are more likely to precipitate when heated. This urinary pre cipitate was associated with a bone disease termed "mollities ossium. " [H. Bence Jones, Papers on Chemical Pathology, Lecture III. Lancet 2, 269-274 (1847)].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confronted with a myriad ofT's, N's and M's in the VICC TNM booklet, classifying a malignancy may seem to many cancer clini cians a tedious, dull and pedantic task. But at a closer look at the TNM Atlas all of a sudden lifeless categories become vivid im ages, challenging the clinician's know-how and investigational skills. Brigit van der Werf-Messing, M.D. Professor of Radiology Past Chairman of the International TNM-Committee of the VICC Rotterdam, July 1982 Preface In 1938 the League of Nations Health Organization published an Atlas Illustrating the Division of Cancer of the Uterine Cervix into Four Stages (J. Heyman, ed., Stockholm). Since this work appeared, the idea of visual representation of the anatomical ex tent of malignant tumours at the different stages of their develop ment has been repeatedly discussed. At its meeting in Copenhagen in July 1954, the DICC adopted as part of its programme "the realization of a clinical atlas". How ever, the time to do the planned book of illustrations was not ripe until the national committees and international organizations had officially recognized the 28 classifications of malignant tu mours at various sites as presented in the third edition of the TNM Booklet edited by M. Harmer (TNM Classification of Malig nant Tumours, 1978). This was all the more important since publi cation of the Booklet was followed in 1980 by publication of a Brochure of Checklists, edited by A.H.

Book Cancer Biomarkers in Body Fluids

Download or read book Cancer Biomarkers in Body Fluids written by Gabriel D. Dakubo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-29 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to measure and monitor cancer biomarkers in “body fluid biopsy” should greatly impact oncologic practice. “Biomarkers in Proximal Fluids”, the third of the “Cancer Biomarkers in Body Fluids” series details cancer signatures in none or minimally circulating body fluids including saliva, sputum, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, exhaled breath condensate, nipple aspirate fluid, gastric and pancreatic juice, stool, urine, and prostatic, peritoneal and cerebrospinal fluid. These fluids are enriched with biomarkers, especially those emanating from cells of the proximal tissue. Chapter 1 examines the global burden of cancer and the need for regional efforts at primary prevention, early detection and patient care. Chapters 2-12 address tissue-specific biomarkers in associated body fluids. The tumor interstitial fluid as a microenvironment rich in cancer biomarkers is detailed in chapter 13, while chapter 14 looks at the human body fluid microbiome and its evolving role in cancer. Commercially available assays using proximal fluids are examined at the end of the respective chapters. This book complements its predecessors and is equally useful to oncologists, cancer researchers, clinicians, medical students, nurses, diagnostic laboratory and pharmaceutical industry personnel.
