Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on the Seen and Unseen AT this season we are particularly called upon to consider that great Union of the Seen and Unseen, the mystery of the Holy Incarnation, by which is understood the first coming of Christ in the esh. This doctrine, we may be assured, lies at the foundation of the Christian religion; and must therefore be a matter concerning which it is of the greatest consequence to us all to have a sound knowledge and a right faith. Book The All Seeing Unseen Eye of God and Other Sermons

Download or read book The All Seeing Unseen Eye of God and Other Sermons written by Matthew Newcomen and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2013-07-24 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a compilation of Newcomen’s most rare sermons. The sermons reflect a life dedicated to experiencing and understanding the bible, spiritual truth, and experimental Christianity. His preaching is eminently biblical, energetic and powerful. They clearly display the peculiar ability Newcomen had to capture the attention of a church congregation in order to teach them the great truths of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. His first sermon covers, “The All-Seeing Unseen Eye Of God” which is a fantastic exhortation to holiness taken from Hebrews 4:13, “But all things are naked and open unto the eyes of him, with whom we have to do.” God knows every person who ever was or will be, all their works, all their speeches, and all their thoughts, and such things are always present in the mind of God. This should prompt us to fear and revere God. This sermon alone is worth the cost of the volume. It is best exhortation on this subject matter in print. “The Craft and Cruelty of the Church’s Adversaries” is a powerful polemic against Roman Catholicism, Arminianism and Libertinism which deters Christians to the true faith found in Jesus Christ alone. He explains Nehemiah 4:11, “And our adversaries said, They shall not know nor see, till we come in the midst among them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.” He shows how the church is at war with the wicked designs of men who would tear down the work of Jesus Christ. Also included is “Jerusalem’s Watchman,” “Walking Worthy of the Gospel,” and a funeral sermon on Acts 13:36. This work is not a scan or facsimile and has been made easy to read with an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Download or read book The Invisible Things and Other Sermons Classic Reprint written by J. Sparhawk Jone and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Invisible Things, and Other Sermons Rome, refers to the universal decay of morality and contrasts the elevation and excellence of the Gospel with the practices of paganism. He also intimates that the Gentiles could have done better and acquired cleaner, clearer, and more just ideas concerning God and His moral government had they used their moral sense with care and fidelity. He does not by any means say that the Gospel is superfluous, or that man has by nature all the data and materials he requires; but only that, Without the Christian reve lation, the heathen world might have done better in the Sphere of religious conceptions and of practical conduct. Paul looks upon the world at large from the standpoint of a Jew; and although his own com patriots were no paragons, there had yet been a moral elevation, simplicity, and purity of doctrine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from We Would See Jesus: And Other Sermons These sermons were stenographically reported and, aside from the correction of obvious minor errors inevitable in rapid Speaking and reporting, they appear just as they came hot from the preacher's heart. I have not wanted to have them marred by a too critical revision by either the author or the editor. He has had very little time for corrections, and I have had no disposition to make changes or Suggest emendations. The sermons, then, appear as preached. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unspoken Sermons Let us then look at the passage as I think it ought to be translated, and after that, seek the meaning for the sake of which it was written. It is a meaning indeed by no means dependent for its revelation on this passage, belonging as it does to the very truth as it is in Jesus; but it is therein magnificently expressed by the apostle, and differ ently from anywhere else - that is, if I am right in the interpretation which suggested itself the moment I saw the probable rhetorical relation of the words. All things were made through him, and without him was made not one thing. That which was made in him was life, and the life was the light of men.' Book The Eye for Spiritual Things

Download or read book The Eye for Spiritual Things written by Henry Melvill Gwatkin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eye for Spiritual Things: And Other Sermons Christ our Saviour came to destroy nothing at all, save the works of the devil. The knowledge of God is not to be earned by sacrificing reason to feeling, or feeling to reason, by ascetic observance or by orthodox belief: it is given freely to all that purify themselves with all the force of heart, and soul, and mind. Further, the only power that can bring feeling, thought, and will into harmonious action is the personal influence of Christ - which St. Paul sums up in faith. From that personal influence all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed, though the doers be those who never heard His name; and to its transfiguring power, if it be rightly received, no limit can be set even in this life. Book excerpt: "I bring you news of a living reality that changes everything. Jesus has come; Jesus will come. Whatever your own personal darkness, it has been and will be overcome." Means of Grace is a weekly devotional culled from the sermons of beloved pastor and theologian Fleming Rutledge, organized according to the framework of the liturgical calendar. Each entry, compiled and edited by Rutledge's friend Laura Bardolph Hubers, begins with a biblical passage and ends with a short prayer. Those familiar with Rutledge's work will recognize both her genuine empathy for human experience and her deep reverence for God. Anyone longing for the wise pastoral guidance of an adept veteran preacher--one who views Scripture not as bland "life lessons" or "timeless teaching" but as "the living God present and acting in the story of redemption"--will find here a meaningful companion through the seasons of their spiritual journey that they can return to year after year.

Book The Blind Man s Creed and Other Sermons Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Blind Man's Creed, and Other Sermons It gives an added interest to the event that the blind man was the first confessor in the new kingdom. He was that sort of person that we should suppose our Lord would have found it particularly pleasant to do something for. He was ready to do what he could for himself, if what he could not do for himself the Lord would do for him. And so when he was told to go and wash, he went without making any words about it. Unlike Naaman, Willingness was one char acteristic of him. Sturdiness was another. He spoke his mind, even though it cost him the accusation Of heresy and the verdict of excommunication. His thoughts were distinct, and, therefore, his utterances were so. One thing I know: I was blind; now I see. Crisp thinking makes crisp speaking.
