Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on the Life of Christ Christ aside as a supernatural creation on whom, as on a pivot, the divine administration over the race centers, history is a chaos, Without light, without order, Without any intelligible end. On this subject I propose to dwell more fully in a subsequent discourse, when I come to bring the theory Of natural develop ment under review. And I state it now merely to in dicate the position of Christianity as recognizing the whole history of the world previous to Christ as de signed to refer to his coming. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on the Passion of Jesus Christ We can never at all realize or even have any idea of the meaning of the great, the stupendous fact which the Church today commemorates, unless we know and keep before us, Who it is that suffers on the cross. Hence I begin our instruction with asking - Who is it that hangs, agonizing and suffering, on the hill of Calvary? It is Jesus Christ, at once God and Man, the Eternal Word and Wisdom Of the Godhead, the very Figure of His substance and the Splendor of His glory; He before Whom the worlds tremble and the Angels are not pure. It is He Who from the beginning was in the Father; in Whom and by Whom and through Whom all things have been made; the Second adorable Person of the Blessed Trinity, and no less. Let this truth sink deep into your souls; for without it Calvary has no meaning. If Christ were but a mere man, His Sacrifice would not be that which it claims to be, and which it is our hope and security and salvation that it is. Book The Life of Christ in the World

Download or read book The Life of Christ in the World written by Arthur Brooks and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Christ in the World: Sermons "And God said. Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters." - Genesis i. 6. It is not difficult to understand the conception X which was in the mind of the writer of this verse. In it he ascribes to God that wonderful balance between the forces of earth and sky by which the two are kept from invading each other. The method by which God accomplishes this is the interposition of the solid expanse of heaven, by which the waters are separated from the waters, and the proper distinction of region carefully preserved. It was a most natural conception for one who, in the dawn of knowledge, looked up and saw the blue vault of heaven above his head, with the stars shining as gems in its solid expanse. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ Our Life: Sermons The wisdom mentioned in our text does not relate to the extent of our knowledge, but to its kind. It is not an expansion of learning already gained, but attention to the sphere of life and conduct which is demanded. It is that wisdom of which the fear of the Lord is the beginning. It has its seat in the heart. This is the repeated declaration of the Word of God. Not only is it distinctly stated in the book from which our text is taken, but we find it in the Book of Psalms. And in Job we read, Behold the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom. To Solomon, indeed, there was one living illustration of the truth Of his teaching to which he could recur, the mem ory of a father Whose heart was perfect toward the Lord his God; but the life of David is open to us, as it was to him, and we have further means of apprehending this truth in the history of men who. Download or read book Sermons on the Christian Life Classic Reprint written by George Burgess and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on the Christian Life The publisher of this volume has been anxiously desirous to promote, by such means as his position might place in his power, the habit of reading for direct religious edification. He has believed that, both in the private chamber and in the family circle, especially when any are deprived, wholly or partially, of the privileges of the sanctuary, no other books will quite supply the place of printed sermons; and he has regretted that, in our country, so few volumes of this class are offered to the public. In the hope that the taste of thoughtful persons may not be yet at settled variance with what was formerly esteemed so favourable to the growth of individual and domestic piety, he determined to enter on the publication of several volumes from living preachers of the Church, if their consent could be obtained, and if the first results of the enterprise should not be mere discouragements. Download or read book Sermons on the Second Advent of the Lord Jesus Christ Classic Reprint written by Hugh McNeile and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on the Second Advent of the Lord Jesus Christ In committing these Sermons to the press again, after the lapse of thirty years, the Author is more and more confirmed in his convictions, that the revealed truth of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ is the grand desideratum in the present conflicts of the true Church of God in this land. Members, and prominent members, of our National Church have departed more and more from "the simplicity of Christ" as rescued from the traditions of men by our Reformers, and expressed in the natural grammatical meaning of our Thirty-nine Articles. This departure has been on both sides, and to extremes. On the one side, to the meretricious arts and contrivances and ornamentations of "the strange woman," who is content to remain without her absent Husband; and on the other side, to the philosophic pride which is "willingly ignorant" of what the lord Jesus is, and did, at His first coming; and asks, with scoffing scorn, "Where is the promise of His coming" again? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Larger Life: Sermons and an EssayThe title of this collection of sermons has been happily chosen. It admirably indicates their motive and character. There is the larger life in Christ as well as the higher life in Him. As the one mounts voluntarily to heights of self-renunciation in His service which are over and above the level of His mere command, so the other pene trates more deeply the mind and will of God in Him, sees the marvellous depth and scope of the Truth He taught in all its endless applications, and rejoices to live and act in this wider outlook and range as they cannot who only narrowly believe and blindly obey.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Church has retained the proclamation of this Gospel, and will retain it until the end of time. Nor can we perform any better service than to pro claim everywhere, in the church, from the pulpit and at home, this fact of the sacrifice of God for the redemption of all mankind. Download or read book The Finality of Christ and Other Sermons Classic Reprint written by W. E. Orchard and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Finality of Christ and Other Sermons "For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that ye through His poverty might become rich." - 2 Cor. viii. 9. There is a tremendous theology involved in this simple statement which we cannot evade. It does not say that Jesus was poor, but that He became poor: it was a piece of voluntary renunciation. But when was Jesus rich, and when did He become poor? There is no possibility of referring this act of renunciation to His earthly life; it can only refer to the act of the Incarnation by which He surrendered His heavenly glory and His Divine majesty, and adopted not only human life, but a life of poverty. Here we have the doctrine of the pre-existence of Jesus indubitably implied, a pre-existence which for the moment St. Paul is content to define as one of richness. And what a light it throws upon St. Paul's use of the word grace. It stresses its condescension, its voluntary and spontaneous choice, the artistic beauty with which the act of renunciation was made. We need all the fulness which the word holds in New Testament usage to bring out what it here contains. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The objects of scientific research and exposition are phenomena, facts and forces. With all reverence be it said, Jesus Christ is each and all of these. In his historic appearance and abiding influence he is a phenomenon to be observed and explained; in his actual life and works and the effects still produced by him he is a fact beyond dispute; and in the great changes and results consequent upon his appearance and life he is a force to be reckoned with.
