THE VISION OF GOD THE HERITAGE OF PURENESS. St. Matthew V. 8. "Blessed Are The Pure In Heart, For They Shall See God." We have now passed, dearly beloved, as it were, from under the dark shadow of the Cross, and are already in the brightness of that light which streams from the risen Body of our glorified Lord. A lighter and a more joyous atmosphere seems to be about us. Our thoughts have been of suffering and of mourning; of anguish and of woe; our discipline has been a faint and feeble following of the Man of Sorrows. But lo! His travail is over. Jesus Christ is risen to-day. 'Tis our triumphant holy day. He is no longer crucified, dead, and buried;--but is risen. Voices speak from His tomb, " He is not here, He is risen." Yea, He is alive for evermore, and we may no longer finger amid the trials of His Gethsemane, the horrors of His Calvary, or the silent gloom of His tomb made in the hewn rock. No, we have journeyed with Him in all the times and tokens of His humiliation; we have accompanied Him from Bethlehem to Calvary; we have seen in the Child born amid the discomforts of a stranger's temporary home, the image of a man crucified in the midst of shame and obloquy, and now it is permitted us to connect the Conception and the Resurrection, to trace one unmingled course of Purity from the Annunciation which foretold a Birth, to the salutation which proclaimed a victory over Death. Nor will our theme be found to fail us. The Beatitude we consider to-day is every way as suited to Paschal joy, as those that have gone before have harmonized with Passion-tide. We have disturbed from the sacred order of their original progression, the measured dependence of these benedictions, but we have not, as we trust, done violence to the...

In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. Book The Pursuit of Happiness God s Way

Download or read book The Pursuit of Happiness God s Way written by Servais Pinckaers and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-07-18 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we think of happiness, we have to admit that our idea is at times worldly and self-centered. Jesus in His Sermon on the Mount showed us that true happiness will elude us, however, if we follow that kind of thinking. And, in the form of a series of promises and challenges, which we have come to know as the Beatitudes, He told us how to find perfect happiness--both here and in the hereafter. In a world that is capable of the best and the worst, we all have reason to be concerned about the very possibility of ever finding happiness in our lifetimes. The good news of the Gospel message is that we can. Even more, it teaches a way based not on rules and obligations so much as one founded on love, a way that depends upon and leads to the blessings of God Himself. These pages have been written in the conviction that every seeker should make the Sermon on the Mount the primary source of what will and will not make her happy. In His approach to the question, Jesus insists from the outset that we face up to the inevitable trials of life: poverty, tears, hunger and thirst, and shows us how we can find God--the source and object of our joy--in the midst of them.

Download or read book The Beatitudes written by Christopher J. Mertens and published by Glagoslav Publications. This book was released on 1901 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mankind is created in the image and likeness of God for the purpose of sharing in the Divine Life and participating in the blessedness of the infinite glory and goodness of the Holy Trinity. This Beatific Vision is not seeing God in His essence, but rather seeing God by possessing Him within oneself. Communion with God is attained through the cooperation of the divine and human will, whereby the follower of Jesus Christ puts on Christ through the sacraments of the Church and imitates the life of Christ through the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, to the glory of God the Father. Amen. Jesus describes in the opening words of His Sermon on the Mount all that produces beatitude. The very intent of the Beatitudes is to issue the Father’s divine call for man to enter in the blessedness of the Divine Life. Therefore, the Beatitudes illuminate the pathway to theosis (“deification” or “divinization”), which is a journey of eternal progress in the virtuous life by which a perpetual transformation is made into the likeness of God from glory to glory. The Scriptures and the patristic writings of the Church Fathers provide the theological foundation of this book, the objective of which is to provide a guide for the soul to consciously advance in the spiritual life toward the divine goal of theosis in a step-by-step, concrete way. Dr. Christopher J. Mertens is a deacon in the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America. He serves at the parish of Saint Basil the Great in Hampton, Virginia. He received a master’s degree in Applied Orthodox Theology from the Antiochian House of Studies in partnership with the Saint John of Damascus School of Theology of the University of Balamand in the Republic of Lebanon, under the aegis of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch. Download or read book Life in Tension written by Stephen W. Hiemstra and published by T2Pneuma Publishers LLC. This book was released on 2020-11-12 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When God comes into our lives, we change. Our new identity in Christ comes into tension with our old identity in ourselves as the Holy Spirit works in our hearts and minds. This tension arises between who we were and who God created us to be, between us and God, and between us and those around us. The Apostle Paul calls the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives sanctification. Life in Tension reflects on Jesus' Beatitudes in the context of scripture. The Beatitudes serve as an introduction to the Sermon on the Mount and lay out Jesus' priorities in teaching his disciples. Because the sermon serves as a kind of ordination service for the Apostles, the importance of the Beatitudes for the early church, Christian spirituality, and discipleship today cannot be overstated. Life in Tension is organized as a devotional. Each chapter offers a reflection, a prayer, and discussion questions. Chapters are organized around the nine Beatitudes in Matthew. This revised edition facilitates ease of reading. It has an updated cover, fewer Greek and Hebrew references, and fewer footnotes than the original edition. Some editing to enhance clarity has also been done. Hear the words; Walk the steps; Experience the joy! Key words for this book include: Beatitudes, Christianity, spirituality, Jesus, Bible, devotion, faith. prayer, spiritual growth, discipling, Christian spirituality, devotional, sanctification, and faith. Author Stephen W. Hiemstra (MDiv, PhD) is a slave of Christ, husband, father, tentmaker, writer, and speaker. He lives with Maryam, his wife of 30+ years, in Centreville, VA and they have three grown children.
