Both Of these eminent men have finished their appointed course on earth but their works continue to be read with pleasure and advantage by good men Of all dif ferent religious parties; and theirs is the high praise Of having been instrumental in turning many to righteousness. Happy should I be, if I could anticipate any similar effects, though far inferior in extent, from the publication Of the following Discourses. Book The Acts of the Apostles Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Acts of the Apostles Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by F. J. Foakes-Jackson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Acts of the Apostles, Vol. 1 The first volume of Prolegomena in this work must, therefore, be occupied with the historical aspect of the question. The background of Acts i.-xv. Is' Jewish, that of the last chapters mainly Gentile. The Christian background is common to both, but its characteristics are rapidly changing. The first volume, therefore, deals with these three points - contemporary Jewish history and religion, the organisation and general mental attitude of the world of the Roman Empire, the evolution of the early Christian preaching and ideas. In the second volume the literary phenomena of the book are the subject of investigation. A third volume will deal with the exegesis of the Text. Although various scholars have contributed to these volumes, the Editors are responsible for the whole, as, in order to give the work coherence, they have not scrupled to rearrange, abbreviate, or expand the chapters submitted to them and they are fully sensible of the patience displayed by their fellow-workers in accepting their suggestions. For the present volume the Editors acknowledge with gratitude the help which they have received from Canon Box and from Professor Wensink, as well as from the scholars whose definite contributions are printed. They are also greatly indebted to Miss Edith Coe for much help in the correction of proof. They have endeavoured to indicate their appreciation of the unfailing kindness and great learning of Professor George Foot Moore by dedicating to him this volume. Among many privileges which they have received in the United States they value his help as second only to his friendship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Credibility of the Book of the Acts of the Apostles: Being the Hulsean Lectures for 1900-1901 The last of the four lectures was delivered in St. Mary's Church at a time of profound national sorrow. I have ventured to retain, as a memorial of an historic Sunday, the words, inadequate as they must appear, in which I referred to her late Majesty, Queen Victoria. At the close of the third lecture it was my duty to speak of the late Bishop of London. The sense of the greatness of whose loss to the Church time does not diminish; these few paragraphs also I have printed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Acts of the Apostles, in Four Books: With Copious Notes Perhaps the manner and style of the work may tend to produce a two-fold effect: first, to invite the attention of all Christians to the study of this inspired narrative; and secondly, to convince the public, that the Catholic Church loves to unlock the fountains of the Scriptures to her faithful and humble children. If I succeed in bringing about this result, my hopes will be crowned, and my labors abundantly rewarded. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Studies in the Acts of the Apostles Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in the Acts of the Apostles Classic Reprint written by Benjamin Bloomfield Loomis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-12 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Acts of the Apostles The constantly increasing interest taken in the study of the English Bible is cause for great satisfaction on the part of all lovers of the divine. Word. There has always been much devotional reading of the word of truth by believers, since here is found the bread of life for the soul. But this reading has been very largely fragmentary, of isolated passages, without reference to the scope of the book as a whole, or their relation to other por tions of the author's writings. Recently, however, the Bible has been studied more in a systematic manner, the inductive method has been applied, and questions of relation, time, place, circumstances, are taken into account, so that more clear and intelligent ideas of its real teaching have been gained. The Bible has been made a text-book in a large number of institutions of learning, and regular recitations are heard, and as thorough preparation required as in any other branch of study. It is for the promotion of this advanced movement that the present volume has been prepared. As its title indicates, this is not a book for mere cursory reading, nor even a book whose contents are to be simply memorized, but it is designed as a guide and aid to the faithful student in acquiring a clear understanding of the Book of the Acts of the Apostles. This work has been prepared as a companion volume to Dr. J. L. Hurlbut's Studies in tue Four Gospels, to be used consecutively with it, and hence follows the same general plan and arrangement of topics. Book The Training of the Apostles Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Training of the Apostles Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Henry James Coleridge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training of the Apostles, Vol. 2 The chief occupation of our Lord at this time, beyond His usual and unremitted exertions in preaching to the people, was undoubtedly the training and the formation of the Twelve Apostles. At the beginning of this volume we find Him selecting them, finally and formally, from the general company of His disciples. This great act of our Lord was followed by the delivery of the Sermon on the Plain, which fills a considerable part of the present volume, although it has not been necessary to treat it at the same length with the Sermon on the Mount, on which it is in the, main founded. It may either be considered in itself, as a monument of the moral teaching which our Lord put forward at this period of His Public Ministry, or it may be regarded as a model which the Apostles might follow, in the adaptation, to different audiences, of truths which had already been taught, but which were too important not to be repeated again and again. Book New Commentary on Acts of Apostles Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book New Commentary on Acts of Apostles Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by J. W. McGarvey and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Commentary on Acts of Apostles, Vol. 1 The composition of my first commentary on Acts was begun when I was about thirty years of age, and the work was published about four years later. The greater part of the writing was done amid the distractions of the first two years of our civil war, and the volume was issued in the autumn of 1863, when men's thoughts were turned away from religion to the events of the mighty struggle. The publication of a commentary under such circumstances was considered so hazardous, that it was not undertaken until the demand for it was tested by a call for subscribers in advance. The response to this call was unexpectedly encouraging, and the volume was issued in the inexpensive form which it has since retained. The sale of the old work, though never very large, has been continuous from the time of its publication till the present hour; and the author has received from time to time most gratifying assurances of the good it has done, both in furnishing needed instruction to many young preachers, and in teaching many other earnest souls "the way of the Lord more perfectly."
