Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons, Essays, and Extracts, by Various Authors: Selected With Special Respect to the Great Doctrine of Atonement "Very considerable controversies have been agitated respecting the manner in which unconverted sinners should be addressed in the gospel ministry. And though this is most certainly a very important article, yet there is a great want of unanimity of sentiment respecting it. Perhaps injudicious views of several Calvinistic doctrines have had an unhappy influence upon the minds of some. It must be owned there are characters in the ministry, and such as are zealous for the leading truths of the gospel, who in the pulpit have little or nothing to say in a way of direct address to the unconverted part of their auditory. Nay, some go so far as to contend that this is no part of their work. - How such can reconcile their creed with the example of Christ, the commission he gave to his disciples, and the practice of the apostles, to say nothing of the conduct of the prophets of old, it is not our province to determine. While that text, "Go preach the gospel to every creature," stands in our bibles, we must beg leave to think and act very differently. It is readily owned, that the discourses before us do not immediately handle this subject: yet they discuss a question most intimately connected with it. In the introduction, after remarking the impotence and helplessness of men in themselves, and their entire dependance upon divine grace for salvation, the preacher observes, that "there is a difficulty in the minds of many, how to reconcile this total helplessness of sinners with the sincerity of the gospel call, or with the justice of men's being condemned and punished for their impenitence and unbelief." Several ways in which some have endeavoured to solve the difficulty are pointed out, and their insufficiency shown. Book The Extent of the Atonement

Download or read book The Extent of the Atonement written by David L. Allen and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extent of Christ’s atoning work on the cross is one of the most divisive issues in evangelical Christianity. In The Extent of the Atonement: A Historical and Critical Review, David L. Allen makes a biblical, historical, theological, and practical case for a universal atonement. Through a comprehensive historical survey, Allen contends that universal atonement has always been the majority view of Christians, and that even among Calvinist theologians there is a considerable range of views. Marshalling evidence from Scripture and history, and critiquing arguments for a limited atonement, Allen affirms that an unlimited atonement is the best understanding of Christ’s saving work. He concludes by showing that an unlimited atonement provides the best foundation for evangelism, missions, and preaching.

Book Theologies of the American Revivalists

Download or read book Theologies of the American Revivalists written by Robert W. Caldwell and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2017-03-04 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, revivals—and the conversions they inspire—have played a significant role in American evangelicalism. Often unnoticed or unconsidered, however, are the particular theologies underlying these revivals and conversions to faith. With that in mind, church historian Robert Caldwell traces the fascinating story of American revival theologies from the First Great Awakening through the Second Great Awakening, from roughly 1740 to 1840. As he uncovers this aspect of American religious history, Caldwell offers a reconsideration of the theologies of figures such as George Whitefield, Jonathan Edwards, John Wesley, Joseph Bellamy, Samuel Hopkins, and Charles Finney. His scope also includes movements, such as New Divinity theology, Taylorism, Baptist revival theology, Princeton theology, and the Restorationist movement. With this study, we gain fresh insight into what it meant to become a Christian during the age of America's great awakenings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Limited atonement is not the only Reformed model of atonement "Hypothetical universalism," or "unlimited atonement," states that Christ's death is sufficient for the guilt of all people yet is only effectively applied to those with faith. This tradition, typified by the French Reformer Moïse Amyraut, has continued among Anglicans and Baptists for over four centuries, yet has been underexplored in Reformed systematic theology. Unlimited Atonement fills a gap in resources on atonement theology that begin with the unlimited love of God. Editors Michael F. Bird and Scott Harrower draw on the specialties of each of the ten contributors, addressing themes such as: • the biblical and historical sources of the soteriological position known as Amyraldism • distinctive features of Anglican atonement theology • Introductions to every book of the Bible to help you approach the text • hypothetical universalism, election, and the Baptist theological tradition • other prominent advocates of unlimited atonement • the issues of systematic theology at stake • atonement theology in preaching Unlimited Atonement is the most comprehensive analysis of Amyraldism to date, providing a resource for theology and Bible students and teachers in an esoteric stream of Reformed theology. Bird and Harrower provide a starting point for anyone who wants to understand the sources and merits of Amyraldism.

Book This Is My Doctrine The Development of Mormon Theology

Download or read book This Is My Doctrine The Development of Mormon Theology written by Charles R. Harrell and published by Greg Kofford Books. This book was released on 2011-08-05 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal doctrines defining Mormonism today often bear little resemblance to those it started out with in the early 1830s. This book shows that these doctrines did not originate in a vacuum but were rather prompted and informed by the religious culture from which Mormonism arose. Early Mormons, like their early Christian and even earlier Israelite predecessors, brought with them their own varied culturally conditioned theological presuppositions (a process of convergence) and only later acquired a more distinctive theological outlook (a process of differentiation). In this first-of-its-kind comprehensive treatment of the development of Mormon theology, Charles Harrell traces the history of Latter-day Saint doctrines from the times of the Old Testament to the present. He describes how Mormonism has carried on the tradition of the biblical authors, early Christians, and later Protestants in reinterpreting scripture to accommodate new theological ideas while attempting to uphold the integrity and authority of the scriptures. In the process, he probes three questions: How did Mormon doctrines develop? What are the scriptural underpinnings of these doctrines? And what do critical scholars make of these same scriptures? In this enlightening study, Harrell systematically peels back the doctrinal accretions of time to provide a fresh new look at Mormon theology. “This Is My Doctrine” will provide those already versed in Mormonism’s theological tradition with a new and richer perspective of Mormon theology. Those unacquainted with Mormonism will gain an appreciation for how Mormon theology fits into the larger Jewish and Christian theological traditions.
