The five were preached on the successive Sunday mornings of Decema ber, 188 5, and I hoped they would all have appeared in the same Volume. But though the first was ready in time to stand first in Volume II., the Printers rushed the book through the press so rapidly that, by the time the subsequent four were written out, there was no room for them. Book The Sermon on the Mount

Download or read book The Sermon on the Mount written by Charles Gore and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sermon on the Mount: A Practical Exposition There is no plant in the spiritual garden of the Church of England which at the present moment needs more diligent watering and tending than the practical, devotional study of Holy Scripture. The extent to which spiritual sloth, or reaction against Protestant individualism, or the excuse of critical difficulties is allowed to minister to the neglect of this most necessary practice, is greatly to be deplored. It is surprising in how few parts of the Bible critical difficulties, be they what they may, need be any bar to its practical use. Book Expositions of Holy Scripture

Download or read book Expositions of Holy Scripture written by Alexander Maclaren and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Expositions of Holy Scripture: Ephesians That is Paul's way of describing a church. There were plenty of very imperfect Christians in the community at Ephesus and in the other Asiatic churches to which this letter went. As we know, there were heretics amongst them, and many others to whom the designation of 'holy' seemed inapplicable. But Paul classes them all under one category, and describes the whole body of believing people by these two words, which must always go together if either of them is truly applied, 'saints' and 'faithful.' Now I think that from this simple designation we may gather two or three very obvious indeed, and very familiar and old-fashioned, but also very important, thoughts. I. A Christian is a saint. We are accustomed to confine the word to persons who tower above their brethren in holiness and manifest godliness and devoutness. The New Testament never does anything like that. Some people fancy that nobody can be a saint unless he wears a special uniform of certain conventional sanctities. The New Testament does not take that point of view at all, but regards all true believers in Jesus Christ as being, therein and thereby, saints. Now, what does it mean by that? The word at bottom simply signifies separation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transplanted Truths: Or, Expositions of Great Texts in Ephesians The Scripture is an ancient book. From some standpoints it might be said to be out of fashion. But it has a vitality about it that refuses to be put aside. This is because it contains great, eternal truths and principles that are like perennial plants, that may be transplanted into new soil or removed to new climate and still bear their flowers and shed their native perfume. The truths of the New Testament, when adapted to modern life, do for people just What they did for those to whom they were at first written. All that is necessary is to clothe the ideas in our phrase and apply them to our circumstances, and lo! The old songs of praise and the ancient peace of heart reappear. These sermons are attempts thus to trans plant the ideas that gladdened the heart of Paul and of his Ephesian brethren. The objects of scientific research and exposition are phenomena, facts and forces. With all reverence be it said, Jesus Christ is each and all of these. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from When Jesus Wrote on the Ground: Studies, Expositions and Meditations in the Life of the Spirit Those who know Edgar Dewitt Jones, the man, will keep wishing that all who share with them the in spiration of these published sermons might have in mind the image of the preacher himself. Lucid and heartening as this printed preaching is, it requires the personal presence of the preacher to give it its full power. Such a remark I well know is a commonplace, and it passes usually as a truism. But it is not always true. Preachers there are a-plenty whose written word is discounted by their personalities, just as Paul's opponents declared that his letters were weighty and telling, but his personality weak and his delivery be neath contempt. We know that in Paul's case this was simply the talk of his enemies, for the results of the personal labors of the great apostle are not Open to dispute and the tone Of voice in which he defies his Opponents in the later chapters of his Second Corin thian letter discloses a sense of personal power which a man could hardly have gained save by its successful exercise under many crucial tests.
