Book Sermon Reading Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sermon Reading Classic Reprint written by William Spooner Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermon Reading Van Oosterzee, in his Practice of Theology, complains that the History of the Art of Preaching is only for too many "terra Incognita," but allows validity to the excuse that there is yet wanting a good history of the Art. Furthermore, the exceeding meagerness, in all Church annals, of reference to that institution, dignified and emphasized by the final command of Christ to his Disciples, is like a surprise, disappointment and mystery to the student of Christian history. Therefore, the task of presenting any historic phase of this subject is not an easy one. Hence, I bespeak the forbearing consideration of my readers in this attempt in a brief and imperfect way to tell whence and how the practice of sermons in the pulpit has come to be so familiar with us. Book Christ in the Christian Year and in the Life of Man

Download or read book Christ in the Christian Year and in the Life of Man written by F. D. Huntington and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ in the Christian Year and in the Life of Man: Sermons for Laymen's Reading This volume owes its existence to a letter received by the author, some months ago, from a presbyter in one of our western dioceses highly esteemed in the Church at large and of wide experience in its service. He believes that there is still need of printed sermons to be read in churches, and gives some reasons why the present publication should be made. Although it would not have been undertaken but for his advice and request, he is in no manner responsible for what the book contains. This suggestion having been adopted, it became necessary to accept whatever limitations it imposed both as to matter and method. Preferences which otherwise might be reasonably indulged, as respects topics and their treatment, lines of abstract thought and completeness of discussion, must to some extent be sacrificed. The frequent appearance of italics, a blemish on the pages to the eye of taste, is to be accounted for in the same way. It was also thought that to most readers certain obvious aspects and explanations of the principal Church-seasons might be supposed to be already sufficiently familiar. Let it be stated as according to the author's general conception of preaching that the aim in each individual discourse should be rather to give a sense of reality, in the particular truth there presented, than to exhaust subjects; to create in the hearers as vivid and abiding an impression as may be of some distinct department of Christian doctrine or duty, comprehending only such relations of idea and fact as seem most suitable to that end. Several important topics, pertaining to the domain of Church-instruction, are reserved for another volume. The author ought frankly to add that in allowing these sermons, many of which were written for a parochial ministry, to go to press, he could not bring himself to consider merely their use in lay reading. Book The Gospel and the Age

Download or read book The Gospel and the Age written by W. C. Magee and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel and the Age: Sermons on Special Occasions The sermons contained in this volume were preached, as their title states, on special occasions. They were selected for publication not as possessing, for that reason, any special merit, but because they were the only ones the publication of which was possible for their author. The preacher of what are called extempore sermons - that is to say, sermons not read from manuscript, but delivered from brief notes - cannot reproduce them in print unless they happen to have been taken down at the time by a reporter. Such reports can hardly ever be verbatim, and are for the most part more or less imperfect and inaccurate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unspoken Sermons All things were made by him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. I. 3, 4. IT seems to me that any lover of the gospel given to thinking, and especially one accustomed to the effort of uttering thought, can hardly have failed to feel dissatisfaction, more or less definite, with the close of the third verse, as here presented to English readers. It seems to me in its feebleness, unlike, and rhetorically unworthy of the rest. That it is no worse than pleonastic, that is, redundant, therefore only unnecessary, can be no satisfaction to the man who would find perfection, if he may, in the words of him who was nearer the Lord than any other. The phrase 'that was made' seems, from its uselessness, weak even to foolishness after what precedes All things were made by him, and without him was not anything 'made Z/zczt was made. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Five Village Sermons Hen we read such psalms as the one from which this verse is taken, we cannot help seeing, if we consider, a great difference between them and any hymns or religious poetry which are commonly written or read in these days. The hymns which are most liked now, and the psalms which people most willingly choose out Of the Bible, are those which speak, or seem to speak, about God's dealings with people's own souls, while such psalms as this are overlooked. People do not care really about psalms of this kind when they find them in the Bible, an'd they do not expect or wish nowadays any one to write. Poetry like them. For these psalms of which I speak praise and honour God, not for what He has done to our souls, but for what He has done and is 66mg, in Que. Gas. Book Sermons Addressed to Individuals Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sermons Addressed to Individuals Classic Reprint written by Reginald J. Campbell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons Addressed to Individuals IT is often asserted that sermons as a rule make very poor reading Somehow they seem to lose their human interest when they pass into the printed page and the personality of the preacher is withdrawn. Such, of course, is not always the case, as the sermons of Spurgeon, Phillips Brooks, and Robertson of Brighton clearly testify; but it must be admitted that these are the exception, not the rule. Most sermonic literature is dry reading, or if it be the reported verbatim utterance of the preacher - and this is not literature - the colloquial isms and direct style of address have a tendency to become irritating to the reader. This tendency is especially noticeable if reported sermons are issued in permanent form. With these considerations in view something in the nature of an experiment is being attempted in the issue of the present volume. The sermons included herein are not literature, they are ex tempore speech; they are face to face teaching and exhortation addressed to an audience which, at the time, and to the preacher, consisted as it were of but one individual. They are human documents called forth by living human experiences. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on Important Subjects The command here addressed to the Israelites, is binding upon every impenitent sinner, to whom the Gospel shall be addressed. He is required to perform the same duty, upon the same penalty. It becomes, therefore, a matter of infinite importance that we should well understand, and fully and immediately 'obey, the requirement. Book Revival Sermons Classic Reprint

Download or read book Revival Sermons Classic Reprint written by Daniel Baker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revival Sermons My feeling toward my father, and ever Since I can remember, has been such, that I have at times feared the Apostle would have condemned it as an inordinate affection, and yet there is this excuse for me, that every member Of his household, our ser vants even, sinned in the same way, if not to the same degree. Certain it is, that the disease Of which my mother died, was my father's, death, for she never held up her head after that befell and hastened to rejoin him within a very few months. Wherever he was known, and according to his degree Of acquaintanceship, he was beloved. Because with all, as with his own family, it Was distinctly a Christian affection which he inspired, and there fore an affection the deepest and most durable of all. When I prepared his Life and Labors, for the press I endeavored to guard myself, and him, from any excess of love and, perhaps, the large circulation to which that volume has attained, in the Old World and the New, as well as the absence of any criticism in the matter, is proof that the self-control was sufficient. In my Story of Carter Quarterman my father, under the transparent disguise of Dr. Quarterman, is portrayed with a freer hand, yet even there I have regarded Truth as more sacred than the one I loved only a little more, at last, than how many thousand! Indeed, if one should speak with precision, they may scarcely be called ser mons. They were prepared weekly during a year for the editorial page of the Philadelphia Press. They are an attempt to speak to that large, and it is to be feared, growing class of men and women who are not hostile to religion, but who are out side the circle oi Christ's Disciples. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Sermons: To Be Read in Families and Social Meetings Several years have elapsed since the author promised to a few friends, that, if life and health should be continued, he would endeavour to prepare a volume of sermons on practical subjects, to be circulated by the Presbyterian Board of Publication. Incessant occupation in professional duties, occasioned the postponement of the fulfilment of this promise from time to time; until recently, when he was informed that the Board of Publication were desirous to put such a volume into circulation; especially for the benefit of families who were deprived of the opportunity of attending on the preaching of the gospel. At first it occurred to him, that for the purposes of the Board, such a volume had better be composed of a collection of sermons contributed by different ministers of our church. But upon reflection, he was persuaded that it would be found difficult to get the proper persons to furnish discourses on the topics which might be prescribed. And he has observed, that when the sermons of several persons are included in the same volume, there is a disposition in many readers to make invidious comparisons between the authors; and while some discourses are highly valued, others are neglected. Upon the whole, it seems best that every author should make his own book; and to obtain a desirable variety, more volumes of sermons than one should be put into circulation. The author being aware that books of sermons are not in as much demand as publications of another kind, would not have consented that the Board of Publication should run the risk of an edition of this volume; but this objection was obviated by the generous proposal of the friends referred to above, to bear the whole expense of stereotyping the work. There is also one of another character: No. XXX., for Whitsunday, was not strictly speaking a sermon at all, but was one of a series of addresses, delivered during a Retreat of the Companions of the Love of Jesus. To those to whom every word of his is precious, it is hoped that this selection may be acceptable; and that others, who have not yet come within the influence of his teaching, may be led, by the specimen here given, to desire more, that so, although his living voice is no longer heard among us, his teaching may spread year by year, in ever-widening circles, till time shall be no more, and the Church's work on earth shall be ended.
