Book excerpt: In the Spring of 2017, activist, journalist and hip-hop artist Marcel Cartier was given exclusive access to the structures set up in the predominately Kurdish areas in northern Syria. Over the course of more than a month, Cartier travelled across the terrain known as Rojava, experiencing the radical grassroots revolution that is sweeping the region. He spoke with commanders of the People’s Protection Units (YPG), visited women’s organisations, saw the cooperatives and communes in action that have transformed the concept of democracy, and found his understanding of revolution challenged and reinvigorated. Unique in its access, emotion and humanity, Serkeftin: A Narrative of the Rojava Revolution, is a beautiful account of a contradictory and complex process that is fundamentally changing society in the midst of the 21st century’s most brutal civil war. Meaning ‘victory’, the Kurdish word ‘serkeftin’ captures the spirit of optimism in the catastrophe that has engulfed this beautiful country since 2011 and has simultaneously brought the possibility of freedom ever closer.

Book Berxwedan Writings on the Kurdish Freedom Movement

Download or read book Berxwedan Writings on the Kurdish Freedom Movement written by Marcel Cartier and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-04-28 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than four decades, the Kurdistan Workers? Party (PKK) has taken on the Turkish state while fighting for an alternative to capitalism and national oppression. However, it has only been in the past few years when war threatened to fragment Iraq and Syria that the Party's ideology of democratic confederalism and women's liberation has come to international attention. Today, organisations across the four historic parts of Kurdistan advocate a solution to the region's problems based not on the nation-state, but on grassroots democracy and pluralism. ""Berxwedan: Writings on the Kurdish Freedom Movement"" looks at the events that occurred throughout 2018 in relation to this movement for radical change. These include Turkey's invasion of Syria and subsequent occupation of Afrin, the re-election of Recep Tayyip Erdogan through suppression of Kurdish voices, and the complicated and ever evolving relationship between the YPG and the United States.

Book The Kurds in Erdogan s New Turkey

Download or read book The Kurds in Erdogan s New Turkey written by Nikos Christofis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the AKP government since 2002 during which time the state’s approach to the Kurdish Question has undergone several changes. Examining what preceded and followed the failed putsch of 2016, it explains and critiques that situates the Kurdish Question in its broader context. It stands out with the main objective to avoid any ‘policy-oriented bias’ through an interdisciplinary and multi-thematic approach. The volume discusses the state and policies in the Kurdish region of Turkey, as well as counter-hegemonic discourses that seek to reform existing institutions. Some chapters focus on the domestic aspects and gender perspectives of the Kurdish Question in Turkey, which focus has been taken over by recent developments in Syria and the Middle East in general. Other chapters include a range of new aspects of Turkish society and politics, and the international aspects of Ankara’s policies and its implications not only inside Turkey but also internationally. Taking both domestic and foreign policy aspects into account, the book offers a set of innovative explanations for the state of crisis in Turkey and a solid basis for thinking about the likely path forward. Scholars, researchers and post-graduates, interested in political theory, Kurdish and Middle East politics will find this book invaluable.

Book The Falling Rate of Learning and the Neoliberal Endgame

Download or read book The Falling Rate of Learning and the Neoliberal Endgame written by David Blacker and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2013-12-13 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current neoliberal mutation of capitalism has evolved beyond the days when the wholesale exploitation of labor underwrote the world system’s expansion. While “normal” business profits plummet and theft-by-finance rises, capitalism now shifts into a mode of elimination that targets most of us—along with our environment—as waste products awaiting managed disposal. The education system is caught in the throes of this eliminationism across a number of fronts: crushing student debt, impatience with student expression, the looting of vestigial public institutions and, finally, as coup de grâce, an abandonment of the historic ideal of universal education. “Education reform” is powerless against eliminationism and is at best a mirage that diverts oppositional energies. The very idea of education activism becomes a comforting fiction. Educational institutions are strapped into the eliminationist project—the neoliberal endgame—in a way that admits no escape, even despite the heroic gestures of a few. The school systems that capitalism has built and directed over the last two centuries are fated to go down with the ship. It is rational therefore for educators to cultivate a certain pessimism. Should we despair? Why, yes, we should—but cheerfully, as confronting elimination, mortality, is after all our common fate. There is nothing and everything to do in order to prepare.

Book No Local

  • Author : Greg Sharzer
  • Publisher : John Hunt Publishing
  • Release : 2012-04-27
  • ISBN : 1780993323
  • Pages : 189 pages

Download or read book No Local written by Greg Sharzer and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04-27 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can making things smaller make the world a better place? No Local takes a critical look at localism, an ideology that says small businesses, ethical shopping and community initiatives like gardens and farmers’ markets can stop corporate globalization. These small acts might make life better for some, but they don’t challenge the drive for profit that’s damaging our communities and the earth. No Local shows how localism’s fixation on small comes from an outdated economic model. Growth is built into capitalism. Small firms must play by the same rules as large ones, cutting costs, exploiting workers and damaging the environment. Localism doesn’t ask who controls production, allowing it to be co-opted by governments offloading social services onto the poor. At worst, localism becomes a strategy for neoliberal politics, not an alternative to it. No Local draws on political theory, history, philosophy and empirical evidence to argue that small isn’t always beautiful. Building a better world means creating local social movements that grow to challenge, not avoid, market priorities.

Book The Breakthrough

Download or read book The Breakthrough written by Charles Graeber and published by Hachette+ORM. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Follow along as this New York Times bestselling author details the astonishing scientific discovery of the code to unleashing the human immune system to fight in this "captivating and heartbreaking" book (The Wall Street Journal). For decades, scientists have puzzled over one of medicine's most confounding mysteries: Why doesn't our immune system recognize and fight cancer the way it does other diseases, like the common cold? As it turns out, the answer to that question can be traced to a series of tricks that cancer has developed to turn off normal immune responses -- tricks that scientists have only recently discovered and learned to defeat. The result is what many are calling cancer's "penicillin moment," a revolutionary discovery in our understanding of cancer and how to beat it. In The Breakthrough, New York Times bestselling author of The Good Nurse Charles Graeber guides readers through the revolutionary scientific research bringing immunotherapy out of the realm of the miraculous and into the forefront of twenty-first-century medical science. As advances in the fields of cancer research and the human immune system continue to fuel a therapeutic arms race among biotech and pharmaceutical research centers around the world, the next step -- harnessing the wealth of new information to create modern and more effective patient therapies -- is unfolding at an unprecedented pace, rapidly redefining our relationship with this all-too-human disease. Groundbreaking, riveting, and expertly told, The Breakthrough is the story of the game-changing scientific discoveries that unleash our natural ability to recognize and defeat cancer, as told through the experiences of the patients, physicians, and cancer immunotherapy researchers who are on the front lines. This is the incredible true story of the race to find a cure, a dispatch from the life-changing world of modern oncological science, and a brave new chapter in medical history.
