Book excerpt: "Never before have so many buildings been constructed as today, and never has architecture had so many technological and design possibilities at its disposal. And yet there is a sense of unease about contemporary architecture. In their book, Sergei Tchoban and Vladimir Sedov show how in modern times we have lost the balance between outstanding works of architecture and the background structures that surround them, with every building striving to assert itself in relation to all the others - to drown them out if it can. Yet the modern age is certainly capable of developing a harmony of contrasts - it has everything it needs at its disposal. After taking the reader on a foray through 2,500 years of architectural history, the authors arrive at the anomaly of modernism. They show what contemporary architecture must take into account if it is to achieve a satisfactory overall architectural impression that is harmonious in an entirely new way"--Back cover.

Over 200 drawings are organized into 20 sections, each relating to one of CEBRA’s projects. An index containing colour photographs and renders of their works further illuminates how the drawings are translated into reality. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sergei Tchoban is a German architect of Russian origin, who has won numerous awards and who works and teaches internationally. In addition to his architectural practice with Tchoban Voss Architekten in Germany and Moscow-based firm SPEECH, he has created an impressive number of drawings which oscillate between personal artistic expression and urban, architectural fantasies. In 2013, his Tchoban Foundation opened the Museum for Architectural Drawing in Berlin to provide a home for his first-class collection of architectural drawings that span several centuries. Alongside the permanent collection, it puts on three to four temporary exhibitions every year. In this book, Tchoban engages in four discussions with renowned Berlin-based architectural curator Kristin Feireiss, talking for the first time about his fascination with architecture, drawing, and collecting, and how he sees the world, the medium of drawing, and architecture. These discussions are supplemented with an essay by writer and broadcaster Deyan Sudjic, former director of the London Design Museum. Offering uniquely comprehensive and personal insight into Tchoban's thoughts and working methods, this book casts a light on Tchoban's frequent involvement with both Russia and Germany as architect, artist, and facilitator.
