Book Serenity and Severity

Download or read book Serenity and Severity written by Caleb Seeling and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 5, Manifest West Series, Western Press Books Serenity and severity form a classic Western dichotomy with many manifestations. Beautiful growth and renewal follow a terrifying and destructive forest fire. Rain upon a hayfield can be interpreted as grace or judgment from above, depending on the season. The unpredictability of nature provides hikers with a breathtaking view one day and a life-threatening scenario the next. Yet the nature of the West does not only imply the outdoors. The people of the West encounter serenity and severity in all aspects of life, and this duality impacts their identity and shapes their lifestyles, outlooks, worldviews, and values. This year’s collection includes political discussions, philosophical ponderings, and lighthearted humor that are all a part of life in the West. For the fifth volume of Manifest West, twenty-nine writers explore this theme, revealing the duality of Western life through many different narrative trails—including governed environment, overwhelming fires, hiking adventures, and the effect of location on family. Creativity and diversity come to this anthology in both content and form, with flash fiction joining Manifest West’s standard genres of creative nonfiction, short fiction, and poetry. Their combined reflections enable us to see the intense relationship between humanity and nature; sometimes nature directs humans’ lives, to their harm and to their benefit, and other times, humanity abuses the very environment it cherishes as its home. Authors bring their personal styles, voices, and experiences with life in the West to contribute to a balanced and unique interpretation of serenity and severity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though books on Paul's life and writing abound, very few works have examined the apostle's teaching techniques. In this companion to 'Teaching as Jesus Taught,' Roy Zuck probes Paul's pedagogy to discover principles for effective teaching today. According to Zuck, the apostle Paul stands as a master teacher. "Analyzing and following Paul's educational goals and strategies," Zuck writes, "can help us become better teachers of God's Word. Examining his pedagogy can acquaint us with a number of important principles and procedures in teaching." 'Teaching as Paul Taught' explores the many New Testament references to Paul's teaching as well as the historical and cultural context in which the apostle taught. Zuck carefully organizes this extensive material around fifteen key questions regarding the teaching ministry of Paul. Over twenty tables and questions for reflection at the end of each chapter aid readers in following Paul's example. The result is a comprehensive and practical handbook for everyone involved in a teaching ministry.

Book excerpt: The rough and violent areas of K Street were no place a kid should be left alone, but for fifteen-year-old Micah Tate, it was home. It was never a fit for him, but he fought to survive in it as long as he could. He maneuvered through its courtyards and learned to live in it. When Micah's only options in life became to go to prison for a long time, or become the property of the state, he willingly submitted to a new life and direction. Still reeling from the sudden passing of his wife, Mr. Rudolph Pfeiffer, a seventy-seven-year-old fearless, no-nonsense leader hesitantly took in the teen. Micah was tough, but Mr. Pfeiffer was tougher. Micah was not afraid to stand up for himself nor speak his mind, but neither was Mr. Pfeiffer. When their toughness clashed, Mr. Pfeiffer never backed down, and his hardness prevailed over Micah every time. But when their roughness matched, it was the perfect element to build a solid bond between the two of them. Although Mr. Pfeiffer greatly missed and longed to be with his late wife of five decades, he focused on Micah. Despite the infuriating meddling from Micah's past, Mr. Pfeiffer never gave up on him. Despite threats to Micah's future, Mr. Pfeiffer was a shield for him. Micah moved away from K street, but it was Mr. Pfeiffer's guidance, patience, and lessons on unfairness, economic disadvantages, and broken relationships that taught Micah how to live beyond K Street. Beyond K Street: Journey to Redemption reveals the journey of Micah and the young man he became as a result of Mr. Pfeiffer.

Book A Course of Severe and Arduous Trials

Download or read book A Course of Severe and Arduous Trials written by Lynn Brunet and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The artist Francis Bacon (1909-1992) and the writer Samuel Beckett (1906-1989) both convey in their work a sense of foreboding and confinement in bleak, ritualistic spaces. This book identifies many similarities between the spaces and activities they evoke and the initiatory practices of fraternal orders and secret societies that were an integral part of the social landscape of the Ireland experienced by both men during childhood. Many of these Irish societies modelled their ritual structures and symbolism on the Masonic Order. Freemasons use the term 'spurious Freemasonry' to designate those rituals not sanctioned by the Grand Lodge. The Masonic author Albert Mackey argues that the spurious forms were those derived from the various cult practices of the classical world and describes these initiatory practices as 'a course of severe and arduous trials'. This reading of Bacon's and Beckett's work draws on theories of trauma to suggest that there may be a disturbing link between Bacon's stark imagery, Beckett's obscure performances and the unofficial use of Masonic rites.
