It will tell you what delightful things grew out of their Tea Room, and how the "Patty-Pans flat" was filled with happiness till it overflowed into a larger home. It proves-what you know-that the best times are not always great times. Our Six Girls-and the boys-are busy young folk, and the good things that have come to them they won by courage, perseverance and the merry hearts that are part of innocence and sweetness. More than all, our Six Girls-and one boy-love one another so dearly that they cannot help being successful and happy. We believe-do we not?-that a loving home alone is a real home. Margery, Happie, Gretta and Bob know well that "'tis love that makes the world go 'round." They ask love of those who read the story of their Tea Room which brought happiness to so many, in such unforeseen ways. It is the story of a winter, but a winter all sunshine. Remembering how it was written is it fittingly dedicated to you, dear Gertrude.

Book The Theory of Beauty in the Classical Aesthetics of Japan

Download or read book The Theory of Beauty in the Classical Aesthetics of Japan written by T. Izutsu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Japanese sense of beauty as actualized in innumerable works of art, both linguistic and non-linguistic, has often been spoken of as something strange to, and remote from, the Western taste. It is, in fact, so radically different from what in the West is ordinarily associated with aesthetic experience that it even tends to give an impression of being mysterious, enigmatic or esoteric. This state of affairs comes from the fact that there is a peculiar kind of metaphysics, based on a realization of the simultaneous semantic articulation of consciousness and the external reality, dominating the whole functional domain of the Japanese sense of beauty, without an understanding of which the so-called 'mystery' of Japanese aesthetics would remain incomprehensible. The present work primarily purports to clarify the keynotes of the artistic experiences that are typical of Japanese culture, in terms of a special philosophical structure underlying them. It consists of two main parts: (1) Preliminary Essays, in which the major philosophical ideas relating to beauty will be given a theoretical elucidation, and (2) a selection of Classical Texts representative of Japanese aesthetics in widely divergent fields of linguistic and extra-linguistic art such as the theories of waka-poetry, Noh play, the art of tea, and haiku. The second part is related to the first by way of a concrete illustration, providing as it does philological materials on which are based the philosophical considerations of the first part.

Book Art Life Nature in Japan

Download or read book Art Life Nature in Japan written by Masaharu Anesaki and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 1964-06-15 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The artistic and philosophical heritage of Japan has a special meaning for the modern world. During the present century, Japanese thought and Japanese art have exerted a strong influence on the western mind. Art, Life, and Nature in Japan takes us to the roots of Japanese culture and the origins of this influence. In this brief but deeply meaningful book Masaharu Anesaki provides a panoramic view of Japanese culture, with particular emphasis on the spirit of Japanese art. The book has, in fact, established itself as a classic, and it ranks with such other valuable works of its time as The Book of Tea, in which Kakuzo Okakura deals with a similar theme. Anesaki expresses himself in crystal-clear English to convey a message that is significant today as it was before World War II, when his book first appeared. He advocates peace and a turning inward to the beauty of art and nature. He is as familiar with the Zen philosophy of the samurai and the tea master as with sentiments of ancient court noblemen and the quiet thought of a humble peasant.

Book The Japanese Tea Ceremony An Introduction

Download or read book The Japanese Tea Ceremony An Introduction written by Kaeko Chiba and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-20 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to chado, the Japanese tea ceremony. Unlike other books on the subject, which focus on practice or historical background or specific issues, this book considers the subject from multiple perspectives. It discusses Japanese aesthetics and philosophy, outlines how the tea ceremony has developed, emphasizing its strong links to Zen Buddhism and the impact of other religion influences, and examines how chado reflects traditional gender and social status roles in Japan. It goes on to set out fully the practice of chado, exploring dress, utensils, location – the garden and the tea house – and the tea itself and accompanying sweets. Throughout, the book is illustrated both with images and with examples of practice. The book will be of interest to a wide range of people interested in chado – university professors and students, tourists and people interested in traditional Japanese arts.

Book The Chameleon Poet

Download or read book The Chameleon Poet written by Robert Fraser and published by Random House. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 782 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poet George Barker was convinced that his biography could never be written. 'I've stirred the facts around too much,' he told Robert Fraser. 'It simply can't be done.' Eliot wrote of his 'genius'. Yeats thought him the most interesting poet of his generation. Dylan Thomas envied his power over women. War trapped him in Japan. In America he conducted one of the most celebrated love affairs of the century. He fathered fifteen children in several countries, three during one battle-torn summer. By the 1950s he was the toast of Soho. Barker was Catholic and bohemian, frank and elusive, tender and boisterous. In Eliot's phrase, he was 'a most peculiar fellow.' Robert Fraser's biography offers both a portrait of a talented, tormented and irresistibly entertaining man, and a broad cultural landscape. Around the central figure cluster painters like Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Johnny Minton and the 'Roberts' Colquhoun and MacBryde; writers such as Dylan Thomas, Walter de la Mare and Elizabeth Smart, whose By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept hymns their liaison; the lugubrious humorist Jeffrey Bernard. After closing time at the Colony Room, Minton declared, they had to sweep up the jokes.

Book Art Of Japanese Gardens

Download or read book Art Of Japanese Gardens written by Loraine E. Kuck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-06 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flowering of Far Eastern culture and philosophy as seen through the remarkable gardens they gave rise to. This classic work was one of the first to reveal the full meaning and symbolism of the gardens of China and Japan, and to treat them as serious works of art and material culture, rather than as quaint and pretty plantings. In spirit, the art of these gardens is akin to landscape painting; in form it is close to sculpture. Yet it is really quite different, a unique art based upon the choice and arrangement of natural materials in the creation of a scene that has the power to transform and inspire the viewer and gardener. Loraine E. Kuck begins her study with the naturalistic gardens of early China, progressing on to the gardens of Japan. She relates the development of gardens to the personalities who made them, to the historical background, to Eastern religion and philosophy, to the political events which shaped the culture of each period, to the arts in general and to painting, architecture and the tea ceremony in particular. Above all, her account brings alive a world in which mosses hold the warm promise of spring and hope in their velvet depths; in which the juxtaposition of pools and rocks invite meditation; where sunny slopes convey the calm of centuries and in which flowering cherry trees are viewed by moonlight, with tall lanterns throwing soft light on masses of flowers seen against the starry darkness of the sky. The work includes chapters on Heian gardens, the gardens of the Fujiwara period, the princely gardens of Tokugawa times and Zen landscapes, along with sixty-four pages of illustrations, including many rare photographs. Practical and inspirational, no other work so perfectly captures the spirituality, beauty and complex simplicity of these gardens that link heaven and earth.
