Book Yugoslav Folk Music Serbo Croatian folk songs and instrumental pieces from the Milman Parry collection

Download or read book Yugoslav Folk Music Serbo Croatian folk songs and instrumental pieces from the Milman Parry collection written by Bela Bartok and published by Suny Press. This book was released on 1978 with total page 1981 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This four-volume work is the most substantial and thorough analysis of Yugoslav folk music ever to be published in the English language. In addition to the editorially corrected reprint of the seventy-five Parry Collection transcriptions, first published in 1951, are the 3,449 facsimile reproductions from Bartók's collection of published and unpublished Yugoslav folk song materials. There are, too, instrumental transcriptions from the Parry collection and other sources, hitherto unpublished, and the prodigious Tabulation of Material, amassed from the data inherent in the source melodies, which appears in Vol. II also in facsimile form. Of equal importance is the reprint in Vol. I of the author's index of Serbo-Croatian refrains, which he originally placed in the third volume (Texts) of Rumanian Folk Music for comparative purposes. The editor, Dr. Benjamin Suchoff, provides introductory narratives in which the historical aspect and the chronology of the various manuscript versions are treated. With the assistance of the foremost present-day Yugoslav ethnomusicologists, he has added detailed chapters on related materials that supplement and update Bartók's findings in Yugoslav Folk Music. Dr. Suchoff has also constructed various tabulations, in accordance with Bartókian procedure followed elsewhere, as an aid to the reader. Of special interest will be the computer-derived lexicographical index of themes in Vol. II, which he prepared by extracting the incipits from more than 8,000 melody sections of different content-structure.

Book The Oriental Music Broadcasts 1936 1937

Download or read book The Oriental Music Broadcasts 1936 1937 written by Robert Lachmann and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes CD of the broadcasts (2-disc set) Book URL: https://www.areditions.com/rr/rrotm/otm010.html The ethnomusicologist Robert Lachmann (1892¿1939) wrote and presented twelve radio programs entitled Oriental Music, which were transmitted by the Palestine Broadcasting Service between November 1936 and April 1937. The programs, which formed part of Lachmann¿s pioneering project to establish an ¿Oriental music archive¿ at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, included live performances of traditional music representing the different ethnic and religious communities of Palestine, performances which were simultaneously recorded onto metal disc. This edition presents Lachmann¿s scripts with musical transcriptions of performances, transcriptions and translations of the sung texts, and selected digitally restored musical recordings (provided on the accompanying set of compact discs). The introduction and editorial commentaries explore Lachmann¿s radio lectures as they relate to his body of research on ¿Oriental music¿ and to wider concerns of scholarship, politics, and ideology. This edition will appeal to scholars of Middle Eastern cultural history and ethnomusicology, and especially to those interested in the history of sound archives, recording and broadcasting, the intellectual history of ethnomusicology, and the history, theory, and aesthetics of Middle Eastern music.

Book B la Bart k

Download or read book B la Bart k written by David Cooper and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-28 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This deeply researched biography of Béla Bartók (1881–1945) provides a more comprehensive view of the innovative Hungarian musician than ever before. David Cooper traces Bartók’s international career as an ardent ethno-musicologist and composer, teacher, and pianist, while also providing a detailed discussion of most of his works. Further, the author explores how Europe’s political and cultural tumult affected Bartók’s work, travel, and reluctant emigration to the safety of America in his final years. Cooper illuminates Bartók’s personal life and relationships, while also expanding what is known about the influence of other musicians—Richard Strauss, Zoltán Kodály, and Yehudi Menuhin, among many others. The author also looks closely at some of the composer’s actions and behaviors which may have been manifestations of Asperger syndrome. The book, in short, is a consummate biography of an internationally admired musician."

Book New York State Folklife Reader

Download or read book New York State Folklife Reader written by Elizabeth Tucker and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York and its folklore scholars hold an important place in the history of the discipline. In New York dialogue between folklore researchers in the academy and those working in the public arena has been highly productive. In this volume, the works of New York's academic and public folklorists are presented together. Unlike some folklore anthologies, New York State Folklife Reader does not follow an organizational plan based on regions or genres. Because the New York Folklore Society has always tried to “give folklore back to the people,” the editors decided to divide the edited volume into sections about life processes that all New York state residents share. The book begins with five essays on various aspects of folk cultural memory: personal, family, community, and historical processes of remembrance expressed through narrative, ritual, and other forms of folklore. Following these essays, subsequent sections explore aspects of life in New York through the lens of Play, Work, Resistance, and Food. Both the New York Folklore Society and its journal were, as society cofounder Louis Jones explained, “intended to reach not just the professional folklorists but those of the general public who were interested in the oral traditions of the State.” Written in an accessible and readable style, this volume offers a glimpse into New York State's rich cultural diversity.
