Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Serbia's Part in the War, Vol. 1 "What I ventured to say about Belgium, speaking on behalf of the British Government, I say here again, speaking on behalf of the same Government, about Serbia. The first condition of peace is restoration, complete and without reservation. I came here to make no speech. I came here to say that, however long this war may last, British honour is involved in seeing that Serbian independence is completely restored. It is not merely a matter of honour. It is a matter of the security of civilization. What is true about Belgium, the warden of the gateway in the West, is equally true about Serbia in the East. She is the guardian of the gate, and faithfully has she stood to her trust. She has suffered. She had two glorious campaigns, yea, a third, for with her own right hand she defeated the legions of Austria, and had it not been for the overwhelming masses of the Central Powers that attacked her, she would have still kept the gate. But her gallant troops in the hour of defeat have never been broken-hearted. On the contrary, the remnant of her army gathered together - men came from the East and the West, with Serbian blood in their veins and their hearts throbbing with pride in the traditions of their people - and they are still at the door, watching. One day they will win through and will regain their independence. In the name of the men of British blood who are here, we extend once more the hand of fellowship to Serbia, and we say: 'Come weal, come woe; we are not merely friends, but Allies and partners, and we will work together to the end.'" - The Right Hon. D. Lloyd George, M.P., on August 8th, 1917. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: "The Road to War in Serbia is the first serious attempt by scholars from the former Yugoslavia to systematically explore the roots of the conflict and the ideology and propaganda that incited Serbian people to war. Based on years of research, the authors-all eminent scholars of their respective fields, who have lived through these social conflicts-highlight key issues which have date remained unknown or which have been previously neglected." "The issues dealt with include the institutional frameworks of ethnicity and nationalism; the input of the church, science, literature and sports; specific catalysts of the conflict, and the role of the political actors, students, the ruling party and the media." "The Road to War in Serbia will help to understand why and how the violent option of settling disputes and conflicts on the territory of Yugoslavia is being accepted."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Download or read book Serbia s Secret War written by Philip J. Cohen and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To understand Serbian nationalism requires profound attention to history and careful analysis. Cohen accomplishes both through years of studying primary sources never before translated, focusing on World War II and uncovering the foundations of ethnic cleansing. He argues that the Serbs collaborated with the Nazis in contrast to later Serbian rhetoric that claimed the Serbs were victims, "the thirteenth tribe of Israel." This official duplicity veiled the true objectives of the government to create an ethnically pure homeland. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Download or read book Serbia s Secret War written by Philip J. Cohen and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An entire piece of Serbian history is missing. And in the middle of the latest Yugoslav war - Europe's worst blood bath since World War II - Serbian politicians, propagandists, and revisionist historians have made a cynical attempt at replacing the missing piece by rewriting the Holocaust record. They claim that Serbs were not Nazi collaborators in genocide, but purely victims of the same atrocities that befell the Jews; and that Serbian aspirations for a Greater Serbia are not driven by a murderous, nationalistic hatred, but rather are propelled by a victim's desire to lay claim to a safe homeland, a Serbian Promised Land. Thus has the current spilling of blood been justified." "Philip J. Cohen argues that the existence of such a propaganda campaign, emanating from Belgrade, began in the earliest days of the post-World War II era and, since then, has been reflected in the world media, as well as in popular commentary and scholarly analysis. More astonishing is that this campaign has been widely successful, particularly in Israel." "Remarkable for its broad portrayal and penetrating examination of the Yugoslav social and political experience, Serbia's Secret War draws heavily on documents that have been previously unavailable to the West. Some of the written record has been translated and is published here for the first time. Destined to be regarded as an important contribution to the field, Cohen's careful study of the Serbian role in the Second World War will dramatically alter how scholars, policy makers, and the general public view the bloodshed in the former Yugoslavia - and how they will come to understand the reasons behind it."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
