Book Sequential Tests of Statistical Hypotheses

Download or read book Sequential Tests of Statistical Hypotheses written by Bhaskar Kumar Ghosh and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to give a systematic account of the mathematical theory in this field as applied to problems of hypothesis testing. The resulting methods are predominantly sequential probability ratio tests. A brief account of classical tests under the neyman-pearson formulation is included. The notion of sequential analysis has been used in some form or other in various branches of statistical inference. We may classify these branches into three broad categories: Statistical tests of hypotheses, statistical estimation, and statistical decision theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering a wide range of disciplines, this book explains the formulae, techniques, and methods used in field ecology. By providing an awareness of the statistical foundation for existing methods, the book will make biologists more aware of the strengths and possible weaknesses of procedures employed, and statisticians more appreciative of the needs of the field ecologist. Unique to this book is a focus on ecological data for single-species populations, from sampling through modeling. Examples come from real situations in pest management, forestry, wildlife biology, plant protection, and environmental studies, as well as from classical ecology. All those using this book will acquire a strong foundation in the statistical methods of modern ecological research. This textbook is for late undergraduate and graduate students, and for professionals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sequential analysis refers to the body of statistical theory and methods where the sample size may depend in a random manner on the accumulating data. A formal theory in which optimal tests are derived for simple statistical hypotheses in such a framework was developed by Abraham Wald in the early 1

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains topics that can be covered in a single-semester course. Only elementary proofs are provided, and thus the mathematics and statistics are maintained at a basic level. Only a course in each of three areas — advanced calculus, probability and statistical inference — is assumed of the student. The book has a chapter on applications to biostatistics and a supplement presenting computer programs for selected sequential procedures. Identified problems are provided at the end of each chapter.

Download or read book Sequential Analysis written by David Siegmund and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-09 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern theory of Sequential Analysis came into existence simultaneously in the United States and Great Britain in response to demands for more efficient sampling inspection procedures during World War II. The develop ments were admirably summarized by their principal architect, A. Wald, in his book Sequential Analysis (1947). In spite of the extraordinary accomplishments of this period, there remained some dissatisfaction with the sequential probability ratio test and Wald's analysis of it. (i) The open-ended continuation region with the concomitant possibility of taking an arbitrarily large number of observations seems intol erable in practice. (ii) Wald's elegant approximations based on "neglecting the excess" of the log likelihood ratio over the stopping boundaries are not especially accurate and do not allow one to study the effect oftaking observa tions in groups rather than one at a time. (iii) The beautiful optimality property of the sequential probability ratio test applies only to the artificial problem of testing a simple hypothesis against a simple alternative. In response to these issues and to new motivation from the direction of controlled clinical trials numerous modifications of the sequential probability ratio test were proposed and their properties studied-often by simulation or lengthy numerical computation. (A notable exception is Anderson, 1960; see III.7.) In the past decade it has become possible to give a more complete theoretical analysis of many of the proposals and hence to understand them better.

Book Sequential Statistical Procedures

Download or read book Sequential Statistical Procedures written by Z. Govindarajulu and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-06-20 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probability and Mathematical Statistics, Volume 26: Sequential Statistical Procedures provides information pertinent to the sequential procedures that are concerned with statistical analysis of data. This book discusses the fundamental aspects of sequential estimation. Organized into four chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the essential feature of sequential procedure. This text then examines the sequential probability ratio test procedure and provides a method of constructing a most powerful test for a simple hypothesis versus simple alternative-testing problem. Other chapters consider the problem of testing a composite hypothesis against a composite alternative. This book discusses as well the theory of sequential tests that is appropriate for distinguishing between two simple or composite hypotheses. The final chapter deals with the theory of sequential estimation. This book is a valuable resource for graduate students, research workers, and users of sequential procedures.

The methods are illustrated through real data examples, and software is referenced where possible. The emphasis is on providing all the theoretical details in a unified framework, with pointers to new research directions.

Book Starting Statistics

Download or read book Starting Statistics written by Neil Burdess and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2010-02-17 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistics: A Short, Clear Guide is an accessible, humorous and easy introduction to statistics for social science students. In this refreshing book, experienced author and academic Neil Burdess shows that statistics are not the result of some mysterious "black magic", but rather the result of some very basic arithmetic. Getting rid of confusing x′s and y′s, he shows that it′s the intellectual questions that come before and after the calculations that are important: (i) What are the best statistics to use with your data? and (ii) What do the calculated statistics tell you? Statistics: A Short, Clear Guide aims to help students make sense of the logic of statistics and to decide how best to use statistics to analyse their own data. What′s more, it is not reliant on students having access to any particular kind of statistical software package. This is a very useful book for any student in the social sciences doing a statistics course or needing to do statistics for themselves for the first time.
