This book was released on 2017 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sequence stratigraphic models for low-accommodation settings are not well-formulated and lack documented examples illustrating lithofacies stratal stacking pattern complexities. Presented herein is a detailed stratigraphic analysis of the Upper Cretaceous (Turonian) Ferron Sandstone Member of the Mancos Shale Formation; a fluvial-deltaic succession that primarily accumulated under forced-regressive, falling stage systems tracts during decreasing accommodation. The small (4 km2) study area is located at the connecting point of a 67 km long, depositional strike-oriented and a 30 km long, depositional-dip transect within the western-limb of the Henry Mountains Syncline. Detailed outcrop sections and digital Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) derived Virtual Outcrop Models (VOM) analysis are used to define and characterize the stratigraphic architecture. Correlation of all bodies within the stratigraphic interval display the anatomy of a prograding deltaic system composed of crudely coarsening-upward cycles. This paper focuses on the ‘Critical Interval’, athick, cyclic succession of entrenched distributary channels, reworked delta plain, and transgressive shoreface sandstones that lies above a regionally extensive sequence boundary and separates the lower and upper Ferron members. The moderately incised (5 m), relatively small (150-300 m wide) channel bodies and locally preserved delta plain deposits are interpreted to record two individual sea-level cycles. The incomplete sequences and the facies were influenced by marine-processes and the low-amplitude and high-frequency nature of sea-level fluctuations that characterize Ferron Sandstone Member accumulation. This study provides detailed facies characterization and illustrations of the stratigraphic architecture with implications for deltaic sequences deposited in a low accommodation setting.

Book Geological and Petrophysical Characterization of the Ferron Sandstone for 3 D Simulation of a Fluvial deltaic Reservoir

Download or read book Geological and Petrophysical Characterization of the Ferron Sandstone for 3 D Simulation of a Fluvial deltaic Reservoir written by Thomas C. Chidsey and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2002 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the Ferron Sandstone project was to develop a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, quantitative characterization of a fluvial-deltaic reservoir to allow realistic inter-well and reservoir-scale models to be developed for improved oil-field development in similar reservoirs world-wide. Quantitative geological and petrophysical information on the Cretaceous Ferron Sandstone in east-central Utah was collected. Both new and existing data were integrated into a three-dimensional model of spatial variations in porosity, storativity, and tensorial rock permeability at a scale appropriate for inter-well to regional-scale reservoir simulation. Simulation results could improve reservoir management through proper infill and extension drilling strategies, reduction of economic risks, increased recovery from existing oil fields, and more reliable reserve calculations. This 471-page report describes the geological and petrophysical characteristics of the fluvial-deltaic Upper Cretaceous Ferron Sandstone. The report includes Ferron facies analysis, regional sequence stratigraphy, evaluation of three case-study areas, geostatistics, and a 3-D oil and gas reservoir simulation of the Ferron.

Book Shelf Sand and Sandstone Bodies

Download or read book Shelf Sand and Sandstone Bodies written by D. Swift and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-04-06 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decade of study of the shallow-marine boundary layer has arrived at a synthesis of sediment dynamic principles that can begin to be transferred from the time scales of the rock record (years to millenia). At the same time, the technology of petroleum exploration has lead to a fundamentally new way of examining the deposits of sedimentary basins. This book applies these insights to continental shelf and continental margin deposits, providing an entirely new viewpoint to the subject.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 38 (thesis year 1993) a total of 13,787 thesis titles from 22 Canadian and 164 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 38 reports theses submitted in 1993, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the principles of Sequence Stratigraphy were first published 20 years ago, it was not immediately clear that this concept would revolutionise the way we look at deposition and architecture of sedimentary rocks. Perhaps in retrospect it should not have been so surprising. For the first time seismic data were clear enough that large scale depositional geometries could be resolved; geometries that were not evident from well data alone, and in outcrop work visible only in the largest cliff sections. The observations from seismic data made by the Exxon workers in the 1960's and 1970's were a crucial "piece of the jigsaw" in our knowledge of the way sediments are deposited, and formed the basis for the new paradigm of Sequence Stratigraphy.Gradually through the 1980's the tool of Sequence Stratigraphy was applied to a wide variety of subsurface problems; most commonly large-scale regional reviews of 2D seismic data. Geologists and geophysicists in the oil industry began to realise that here was a way of thinking about rocks that could be used in a true predictive sense. The paradigm implied, that one systems tract should follow another in a predictable way, that observations in one part of a basin had implications in another part, and that undetected play systems could be inferred, and targeted with exploration programs.Sequence Stratigraphy has now gone through a second phase of evolution. The initial concepts have been applied to well and core data. Methodologies have evolved for identifying systems tracts from trends in logs and depositional facies, and from (often subtle) observations in core. The resolving power of 3D seismic data has increased considerably, and we can now see depositional bodies on a relatively small scale, and map their internal character using attribute analysis. Sequence Stratigraphy has entered its High Resolution phase.

Book Facies Architecture of the Upper Sego Member of the Mancos Shale Formation Book Cliffs Utah

Download or read book Facies Architecture of the Upper Sego Member of the Mancos Shale Formation Book Cliffs Utah written by Eric D. Robinson and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Late Cretaceous upper Sego Member of the Mancos Shale exposed in the Book Cliffs of east-central Utah is a 30 m thick sandstone wedge that overlies the Anchor Mine Tongue of the Mancos Shale and underlies coastal plain deposits of the Neslen Formation. Although this sandstone has been interpreted to be comprised of transgressive valley fills, recent detailed facies architecture studies of the underlying lower Sego Sandstone suggest these deposits may instead be regressive deposits of tide-influenced deltas. This study maps facies associations, the geometry of lithic bodies, and key stratigraphic surfaces in order to define the architecture of a 12 km long cross section of the upper Sego Sandstone. This broadly depositional dip-oriented cross section exposes a vertical stack of three sandy intervals, truncated by a high-relief erosion surface, and capped by a shell rich lag. Sandy intervals are interpreted be an assemblage of forward stepping successions of tide-influenced delta lobes. Interval 1, dominantly highly marine bioturbated sandstones which thin landward over kilometers, is cut locally by an erosion surface overlain by tidal bed sets. It is capped by a localized transgressive shell lag and then a thin continuous marine shale. Intervals 2 and 3 are composed of stacked tidal bar deposits that successively coarsen upward and thicken basinward. Interval 2 is overlain by thin marine shales, whereas interval 3 is capped by a pronounced oyster shell lag ravinement surface. A high-relief erosion surface that extends from the top of the upper Sego sandstone down into the Anchor Mine Tongue Shale, is overlain by coarser-grained amalgamated fluvial channel deposits and is interpreted to be a incised valley fill. Erosion surfaces at the base of sandy intervals, thicken and decrease in marine bioturbation within successive intervals, and the valley cut into this succession reflects episodic forced regression of a deltaic shoreline.

Book Sequence Stratigraphic Analysis and Facies Architecture of the Cretaceous Mancos Shale on and Near the Jicarilla Apache Indian Reservation New Mexico their Relation to Sites of Oil Accumulation

Download or read book Sequence Stratigraphic Analysis and Facies Architecture of the Cretaceous Mancos Shale on and Near the Jicarilla Apache Indian Reservation New Mexico their Relation to Sites of Oil Accumulation written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of phase 1 and phase 2 of the Department of Energy funded project Analysis of oil- bearing Cretaceous Sandstone Hydrocarbon Reservoirs, exclusive of the Dakota Sandstone, on the Jicarilla Apache Indian Reservation, New Mexico was to define the facies of the oil producing units within the Mancos Shale and interpret the depositional environments of these facies within a sequence stratigraphic context. The focus of this report will center on (1) redefinition of the area and vertical extent of the ''Gallup sandstone'' or El Vado Sandstone Member of the Mancos Shale, (2) determination of the facies distribution within the ''Gallup sandstone'' and other oil-producing sandstones within the lower Mancos, placing these facies within the overall depositional history of the San Juan Basin, (3) application of the principals of sequence stratigraphy to the depositional units that comprise the Mancos Shale, and (4) evaluation of the structural features on the Reservation as they may control sites of oil accumulation.
