Book Structure and Stratigraphy of Late Quaternary Deposits on the Outer Louisiana Shelf

Download or read book Structure and Stratigraphy of Late Quaternary Deposits on the Outer Louisiana Shelf written by Lamar Burton Roemer and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regional investigation of late Quaternary deposits on the outer Louisiana shelf indicated two principle structural provinces: (1) a western province between West Cameron and Ship Shoal Areas which is highly faulted and structurally controlled by salt tectonics; and (2) an eastern province occupying South Timbalier and Grand Isle Areas which is greatly influenced by the effects of tectonics and sedimentation associated with the Old Mississippi Canyon complex. Vertical forces due to a mobile salt layer at depth, continual basin subsidence, and the incompetence of the overlying sedimentary strata dominate the western structural province where the main locus of deposition was located during Pleistocene time. Growth faults, post-depositional faults, salt dome faults (Radial and peripheral), grabens, horsts, and collapse faults are found in the western province; movement along several of these faults is occurring at the present. In the eastern province little deformation is apparent in the late Quaternary section where thick accumulations of recent sediments are deposited. Thick regional sands are widely distributed across the outer Louisiana shelf. These sands represent fluvial-deltaic sediments that were initially deposited in a series of coalescing deltas during low stands of sea level. As sea level rose these sands were subsequently transported to the north and laterally spread across large areas. Transgressive bars formed during intermittent halts in sea level rises.

Book Seismic Facies and Sedimentary Processes of Submarine Fans and Turbidite Systems

Download or read book Seismic Facies and Sedimentary Processes of Submarine Fans and Turbidite Systems written by Paul Weimer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Frontiers in Sedimentary Geology series was established for the student, the researcher, and the applied scientist to enhance their potential to stay abreast of the most recent ideas and developments and to become familiar with certain topics in the field of sedimentary geology. This series deals with subjects that are in the forefront of both scientific and economic interests. The treatment of a subject in an individual volume, therefore, should be a combina tion of topical, regional, and interdisciplinary approaches. The interdisciplinary aspects are becoming more and more important because most studies dealing with the natural sciences cannot effectively stand alone. Although this thrust may sound simple, in reality it is not, basi cally because each discipline has developed its own jargon and definitions ofterms. Communi cation among disciplines is a major issue and can be accomplished more constructively when people with different backgrounds join together at the same symposium and can read from the same volume rather than confining themselves within the world of their own specialty meetings and journals. Books in this series provide this connective link between disciplines. Each book in this series provides a continuous and connected flow of concepts throughout the volume by the use of introductory chapters that outline a topic to help the reader grasp its problems and to understand the contributions that follow.

Book Late Quaternary Louisiana Shelf margin Deltaic Deposition North central Gulf of Mexico

Download or read book Late Quaternary Louisiana Shelf margin Deltaic Deposition North central Gulf of Mexico written by Casey Ryan Mobley and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study aims to establish a depositional framework for an area of the Louisiana shelf, north-central Gulf of Mexico. The depositional history of the study area is poorly understood, especially within the last cycle of major eustatic fluctuation (18,000 yrs BP -- present). Data sets used in this study include pre-existing and previously unanalyzed two-dimensional, high-resolution seismic profile records (Acadiana 86 and Acadiana 89), geotechnical foundation boring data (Coleman and Roberts, 1988a), and an industry lease block survey report (Cole, 1983). Seismic sequence stratigraphic methods are employed in this study to analyze seismic profile data. Seismic sequence analysis results indicate the presence of five unconformable surfaces and five seismic facies units. Through correlation of seismic profile data with lithologic and chronologic data, it is possible to conclude that these seismic facies units represent shelf-margin deltaic deposition during the last lowstand of sea level (18,000 yrs BP), sourced by the Pearl River.
