Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past few decades we have witnessed an era of remarkable growth in the field of molecular biology. In 1950 very little was known of the chemical constitution of biological systems, the manner in which information was trans mitted from one organism to another, or the extent to which the chemical basis of life is unified. The picture today is dramatically different. We have an almost bewildering variety of information detailing many different aspects of life at the molecular level. There great advances have brought with them some breath-taking insights into the molecular mechanisms used by nature for rep licating, distributing and modifying biological information. We have learned a great deal about the chemical and physical nature of the macromolecular nucleic acids and proteins, and the manner in which carbohydrates, lipids and smaller molecules work together to provide the molecular setting of living sys tems. It might be said that these few decades have replaced a near vacuum of information with a very large surplus. It is in the context of this flood of information that this series of monographs on molecular biology has been organized. The idea is to bring together in one place, between the covers of one book, a concise assessment of the state of the subject in a well-defined field. This will enable the reader to get a sense of historical perspectiv(}-what is known about the field today-and a description of the frontiers of research where our knowledge is increasing steadily.

Download or read book Fungal Virology written by Kenneth William Buck and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since their discovery 25 years ago, fungal viruses have created a new field of study in mycology and virology. The purpose of this book is not only to serve as a useful reference work but also to provide reviews of the important advances which have taken place since the last books on fungal viruses appeared. An introductory chapter gives a critical overview of fungal virology in the context of virology as a whole and of recent developments in molecular biology. Specialist chapters follow, all written by experts who are currently active in fungal virus research and cover ongoing research areas.

Book excerpt: Viral Ecology defines and explains the ecology of viruses by examining their interactions with their hosting species, including the types of transmission cycles that have evolved, encompassing principal and alternate hosts, vehicles, and vectors. It examines virology from an organismal biology approach, focusing on the concept that viral infections represent areas of overlap in the ecology of viruses, their hosts, and their vectors. - The relationship between viruses and their hosting species - The concept that viral interactions with their hosts represents a highly evolved aspect of organismal biology - The types of transmission cycles which exist for viruses, including their hosts, vectors, and vehicles - The concept that viral infections represent areas of overlap in the ecology of the viruses, their hosts, and their vectors

Download or read book Biocommunication of Fungi written by Günther Witzany and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-05-31 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fungi are sessile, highly sensitive organisms that actively compete for environmental resources both above and below the ground. They assess their surroundings, estimate how much energy they need for particular goals, and then realise the optimum variant. They take measures to control certain environmental resources. They perceive themselves and can distinguish between ‘self’ and ‘non-self’. They process and evaluate information and then modify their behaviour accordingly. These highly diverse competences show us that this is possible owing to sign(aling)-mediated communication processes within fungal cells (intraorganismic), between the same, related and different fungal species (interorganismic), and between fungi and non-fungal organisms (transorganismic). Intraorganismic communication involves sign-mediated interactions within cells (intracellular) and between cells (intercellular). This is crucial in coordinating growth and development, shape and dynamics. Such communication must function both on the local level and between widely separated mycelium parts. This allows fungi to coordinate appropriate response behaviors in a differentiated manner to their current developmental status and physiological influences.
