Download or read book Antonyms in Mind and Brain written by Sandra Kotzor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-10-07 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antonyms in Mind and Brain presents a multi-method empirical investigation of opposition with a particular focus on the processing of opposite pairs and their representation in the mental lexicon. Building on recent cognitive accounts of antonymy which highlight the fundamentally conceptual nature of antonymy, this book outlines previous literature to draw out criteria for good opposites and establish the state of the art on the question whether the strong connection of certain opposite pairs is primarily of a conceptual or lexical nature. presents a detailed cross-linguistic empirical study combining corpus data, speaker judgements and behavioural experiments for a wide range of central (e.g. big:little) and peripheral (e.g. buy:sell; wife:husband) opposite pairs to establish the contribution of individual factors. proposes a model of the representation of opposite pairs in the mental lexicon and illustrates how the processing consequences of such a model account for the patterns observed in the data. The approach taken in this book highlights the importance of using a number of different methods to investigate complex phenomena such as antonymy. Such an approach forms the empirical foundation for a dynamic psycholinguistic model of opposition based on the conventionalisation and entrenchment of the conceptual and lexical relationship of antonyms.

Download or read book The Etheric written by Ernst Marti and published by Temple Lodge Publishing. This book was released on 2018 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ernst Marti devoted his life to researching the etheric realm--the subtle area between the physical and spiritual. Taking the numerous statements and references by Rudolf Steiner as his starting point, Marti develops our understanding of the etheric world in various fields--from the theory of knowledge to the natural world, music, the realm of color, eurythmy, and medicine. He proposes exciting bridges between the ancient and medieval worldview and the present and future of the natural and spiritual sciences. Having studied the world of the ethers in volume 1, here Dr. Marti explores the world of formative (or morphogenic) forces. Beginning with the sensory qualities of the visible world, he studies the nature of sense perception, the origin of morphogenic forces, and their phenomenology. In three key sections he examines the formative forces of shape, or form, including growth movements in plants and how they relate to eurythmy and the forces of color; the formative forces of life, or the planetary origin of the morphogenic forces of life and the seven life processes and their relation to rhythm; and the formative forces of substance--the zodiac and the planets and the formative forces of metals. In this concluding volume of his seminal work, Marti also offers pertinent comments on the nature of potentization in homeopathic medicine.
Download or read book Mishnah and the Social Formation of the Early Rabbinic Guild written by Jack N. Lightstone and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where do the origins of the rabbinic movement lie, and how might evidence from the early rabbinic literature be made to reveal those origins? In order to shed light on the early social formation of the rabbinic guild of masters, Lightstone brings the theoretical and methodological insights of socio-rhetorical analysis to examine Mishnah, the first document authored by the early rabbinic movement and its principal object of study for several centuries. He argues that the enshrinement of Mishnah served to model, via its pervasive rhetoric, the principal authoritative guild expertise that qualified and marked one as a member of the rabbinic guild. Furthermore, he establishes the social and historical venue in late second- and early third-century Galilee. The author concludes that the social formation of the early rabbinic guild coalesced around the institution of the Jewish Patriarchy, for which the early rabbis served as bureaucratic-scribal retainers. He further suggests that the development of both the Patriarchy in the Land of Israel and the social formation of the rabbinic guild may have been spurred by the imposition of Roman-style urbanization in the region over the course of the latter half of the second and beginning of the third century. Lightstone’s approach is informed by the insights and methods of several cognate disciplines, encompassing literary analysis, sociology and anthropology, and history (including, in the last chapter, the history of material culture). The book will be of interest to advanced students in the history of Judaism, rabbinic literature, biblical studies, early Christianity, and the history of religion and culture in the late Roman Near East.
