The books are a collection of texts from various eras of Israelite history, spanning the era of the old Israelite Kingdoms, circa 1000 BC, through the Persian conquest, of circa 539 BC. Scholars have debated the origin of the books throughout their history, and there is no consensus within Rabbinical literature, Christian literature, or modern scholarship. The general Rabbinical view is that the two books of Paralipomena were written by one author, as Divrei-hayyamim, and then translated into Greek. The dominant early Christian view was that the books were written by Ezra the Scribe, circa 350 BC, however, this view was generally abandoned in Western Europe during the Protestant Reformation. Modern scholarly analysis has no consensus, however, the books do themselves indicate the eras they were compiled, nevertheless, the authors remain unknown. Based on the references within 2ⁿᵈ Paralipomenon to the Egyptian king Osorkon I as a Kushite, parts of the book must have been compiled sometime between 943 and 716 BC, when Egypt was part of the Kushite Empire, while later sections of 2ⁿᵈ Paralipomenon must have been compiled sometime after 539 BC, when Cyrus the Great conquered the Babylonian Empire. The surviving Hebrew text of Divrei-hayyamim does, however, contain a reference to the Temple in Jerusalem as the 'Temple of the Gods,' which means the original text of the book has to predate King Josiah's reforms of circa 625 BC, and likely predates King Hezekiah's similar reforms decades earlier. Both Hezekiah and Josiah are recorded as removing the idols of the gods from the temple, which had by all accounts been in the temple since it was built by King Solomon.

Egypt developed into a strongly bilingual country, and in the fourth century CE, when Christianity was on firmer ground in Egypt, the Septuagint was translated into Coptic. The intertwined and prolific relation between the Greek and the Coptic Old Testament is now aptly reflected also in the joint ventures of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities. Since the 19th century, Göttingen was and is the global center of Septuagint research. In 2015, a new Academy project started, which deals with the translation of the Septuagint into Coptic-Sahidic: "Digitale Gesamtedition und Übersetzung des koptisch-sahidischen Alten Testaments". Finally, in 2020, the new long-term project "Die Editio critica maior des griechischen Psalters" started at the Göttingen Academy. Both projects work closely together, and the present volume is one of the results of this fruitful collaboration.

It is believed to have been added in the 2nd-century BC, which is why it is not found in all copies. The 5th-century Codex Alexandrinus includes the Prayer of Manasseh as one of the 14 Odes, appearing directly after Psalms, however, it often appears at different positions within Bibles, and is treated as a separate work by many Christian denominations. The Prayer of Manasseh is unusual in that it is written by one of the 'evil' kings of Judea, who restored Baalism, and restored the statue of Ba'al to King Solomon's Temple. It is a prayer dedicated to 'the Lord' which is a direct translation of the title Ba'al, and may, therefore, be seen as a Baalist prayer. This is something that has concerned Jews and Christians throughout history, which is why it is not universally considered canon by either Jews or Christians. The author of the Septuagint's 2nd Paralipomenon (Masoretic Diḇrê Hayyāmîm) attempted to resolve the question of Manasseh's prayer by adding a story of his repentance and return to worshiping the Lord (Masoretic Yahweh) after being imprisoned by the King of Assyria, however, that story is not viewed as possible by many, as it would have meant that Judea was conquered by the Assyrians, who then incarcerated the Judean King in Nineveh. There are no records of this, however, Manasseh is mentioned as the King of Judea in the Assyrian records, and the two nations appear to have had cordial relations. The fact that the author of 2nd Paralipomenon felt he needed to explain the existence of the Prayer of Manasseh, proves it was in use by Jews at the time, although, it may not be the Prayer that ended up in the Septuagint. Fragments of a Hebrew Prayer of Manasseh have been found among the Dead Sea Scrolls, however, not enough of them survives to determine how much the two Prayers originally deviated.

This volume contains the papers given at the Colloquium, which are concerned both with methodological issues and with the interpretation of specific texts (in practice the majority of the texts in the Septuagint for which a messianic interpretation has been claimed). The papers are very far from all reflecting the same approach, and it has frequently happened that the same texts have been treated by different contributors from very different viewpoints. But the fact such different viewpoints are expressed is a proper reflection of the complexity of the issues involved in the question of the extent of messianic belief in the Septuagint, and of the fact that the question requires a nuanced answer. It is in any case hoped that the varied approaches reflected in the papers will serve to make clear the underlying reasons for the differences between those who take a "minimalist" and those who take a "maximalist" view on the subject of the Septuagint and Messianism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thutmose II was the king of Egypt between approximately 1493 and 1479 BC, after inheriting the throne from his father Thutmose I. It is believed he was 17 years old when his father died, and he became king, however, did not partake in the expedition to Kush to suppress the rebellion that year. The Inscription of Tuthmose II's campaign into Nubia to crush the rebelling Nubians in 1493 BC, was discovered in the late 1800s along the road between Thebes and Philae, which was an island near the first cataract of the Nile before the creation of Lake Nasser flooded the region in the in 1970s. By all accounts, Thutmose II did not participate in the campaign into Nubia, and his herald Ahmose Pen-Nekhbet did not mention the campaign in his autobiography. The inscription must have been written on the return leg of the journey from Kush, as it describes the victory over the Nubians. The inscription begins with the list of titles of the pharaoh, which includes a list of lands that the king rules. This list of countries includes the expected lands of Upper and Lower Egypt, the lands of the Minoans (Haunebu) in the Nile Delta and Sinai, the Lands of Phoenicians (Fenkhu) in Canaan and Syria, and the lands of the Nubians in Kush and the Eastern Desert. This description of Egypt implies that the southern frontier at the time was somewhere north of the sixth cataract. Based on the Autobiography of Ahmose Pen-Nekhbet's descriptions of Thutmose I's campaigns, stretches of both the Yellow and Black Niles were likely subject to the Egyptians at the time as well. Based on the described insurrection in the first year of Thutmose II's reign, supported by Egyptian settlers among the Nubians, it seems likely there was more to the story than was reported in the surviving Egyptian records. If the insurrection was not coincidentally in the first year of Thutmose II's reign, then it was caused by Tuthmose II assuming the throne, which implies one of the southern commanders of the Egyptian army led the insurrection, likely another claimant to the throne as Thutmose I's eldest son and designated heir Amenmose severed in the army as a Great Overseer of Soldiers. It is believed that Amenmose had died before Thutmose I had died, which is why his younger son Tuthmose II assumed the throne, however, given the politics of the Egyptian court at the time, it is possible Amenmose was stationed in Nubia when Thutmose I died, and Thutmose II stole the throne from him.
