Book Alternative Wastewater Treatment

Download or read book Alternative Wastewater Treatment written by A.S. Eikum and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the end of World War II there was a major migra tion of population in the United States and Scandinavian countries to urban areas. As a result of this migration and in part due to the public works moratoria imposed during the war, a major pro gram of sewer construction was instigated, which resulted in the collection and subsequent concentration of large volumes of waste water at single discharge points. As the assimilative capacity of these receiving waters was exceeded, it led to or aggravated existing water pollution problems in these waters. To mitigate this degradation of water quality a massive program to construct wastewater treatment facilities was instigated. In addition, large amounts of money were spent on research to improve the technology of the conventional collection and treatment concept. In contrast, the wastewater disposal problem of the rural home owner received little attention, and in most cases the septic tank soil absorption system (ST-SAS) was the interim solution. In recent years there has been a fundamental change in the population growth pattern in the US and Scandinavian countries. It appears that a great many people are moving back to rural areas where they seem to prefer the suburban or small town envi ronment, yet at the same time want all the conveniences of urban life. The provision of proper wastewater disposal facilities presents a very perplexing problem, because the capital and operating costs of conventional sewers are usually financially impractical for rural areas.

Book Hazardous waste classification

Download or read book Hazardous waste classification written by Wahlström, Margareta and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In European legislation, waste is classified either as hazardous or non-hazardous. Hazardous waste is a waste that due to its (intrinsic) chemical or other properties poses a risk to the environment and/or human health. The legislation for waste classification was revised in 2014 in order to align it with the chemical legislation, the CLP Regulation, but some criteria and assessment procedures for the interpretation of the hazardousness were left open. Waste classification has several implications on the waste management. This report presents challenges in the hazardous waste classification. In this report, the authors express their views on the interpretation of the waste status, especially focusing on the potentially recyclable high volume waste streams. Also recommendations for the assessement of some hazardous properties are included.

Book 2nd IWA Leading Edge on Water and Wastewater Treatment Technologies

Download or read book 2nd IWA Leading Edge on Water and Wastewater Treatment Technologies written by Mark C. M. van Loosdrecht and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2005-04-30 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wastewater and drinking water treatment are essential elements of urban infrastructure. In the course of the last century there has been enormous technical development, so successful that for the general public in industrialized countries this infrastructure is hardly noticed. Nevertheless there is ongoing activity to further improve the existing processes. The IWA Leading Edge Technology conference held in Prague helped to stimulate this development and this book helps disseminate the results. A selection of presentations from the conference are included in this volume. Wastewater and drinking-water treatment are normally considered as two separate fields due to the very different boundary conditions that apply. Nevertheless several issues such as membrane processes, removal of micropollutants and water reuse are of crucial importance to both. This potential for cross-fertilization further enhances the value of this collection of high-quality articles that delineate the leading edge of research and development in water and wastewater treatment.

Book Sludge Characteristics and Behavior

Download or read book Sludge Characteristics and Behavior written by J.B. Carberry and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As requirements for high quality wastewater effluent increase, quantities of sludge generated also increase. Contaminants removed from wastewater concentrate in the sludge and can represent serious environmental insult and health effects if not properly managed. The cost of sludge handling can be estimated to constitute as much as 50% of the cost of wastewater treatment. If properly managed, however, sludge may be considered a resource of value. Unfortunately, very little attention in the scientific commu nity has been given the sludge dilemma either in research or in practice. Sludge properties are presently characterized in various ways which do not permit rational design and operation of sludge management systems. The need for basic information regarding sludge properties and behavior was the impetus for a NATO Advanced Study Institute. The NATO Advanced Study Institute entitled "Sludge Character istics and Behavior" was held July 17-26, 1979, at the Uni versi ty of Delaware, Newark, DE 19711, USA. The excellent program quality was a result of both outstanding lecturers and participants. Twelve countries were represented at the Institute so that both formal, professional discussions and informal social activities crossed a broad spectrum of cultures. Gratitude is expressed to all contributors to this volume. Special acknowledgement must be given to the Scientific Affairs Division of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Without its financial support, this Advanced Study Institute would not have been possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nordic Bioeconomy Initiative, NordBio, was a cooperation program launched under Iceland’s presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2014, with the aim to accelerate the development of a sustainable bioeconomy in the Nordic countries, and to enhance Nordic influence on European and global bioeconomy policies. The NordBio program was based on cross-sectoral cooperation with the involvement of five Nordic Councils of Ministers and three governmental ministries in Iceland. One important result of this cooperation was the establishment of a Nordic Bioeconomy Panel, tasked with developing a common Nordic bioeconomy strategy, expected to be finalised before the end of 2017. This report is the final report of the NordBio program. It contains a summary of the main outcomes of the program, including its projects, the Nordic Bioeconomy Panel, and the closing conference of the program.

Book Global Atlas of Excreta Wastewater Sludge and Biosolids Management

Download or read book Global Atlas of Excreta Wastewater Sludge and Biosolids Management written by United Nations Human Settlements Programme and published by UN-HABITAT. This book was released on 2009 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excreta and wastewater sludge are resources. Finding ways to put them to their best uses is part of developing sustainable human communities. But if not managed properly, excreta and sludge can be dangerous to human health and the environment. How to integrate theses opposing concepts is an ongoing worldwide challenge. This Atlas provides examples of how this challenge is addressed around the globe. The 59 reports provide insights into the similarities and differences in the management of excreta, wastewater, and biosolids in 37 countries. This compilation of information includes specific information from 19% of the member states of the United Nations, and includes representation of diverse countries and the full spectrum of management programs.

Book Water and Sanitation Services

Download or read book Water and Sanitation Services written by Jose Esteban Castro and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-04 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Substantially reducing the number of human beings who lack access to clean water and safe sanitation is one of the key Millennium Development Goals. This book argues and demonstrates that this can only be achieved by a better integration of the technical and social science approaches in the search for improved organization and delivery of these essential services. It presents a historical analysis of the development of water and sanitation services in both developed and developing countries, which provides valuable lessons for overcoming the obstacles facing the universalization of these services. Among the key lessons emerging from the historical analysis are the organizational and institutional diversity characterizing the development of water and sanitation internationally, and the central role played by the public sector, particularly local authorities, in such development. It also explores the historical role played by cooperatives and other non-profit institutions in reaching rural and peri-urban areas, as well as the emergence of new forms of organization and provision, particularly in poor countries, where aid and development agencies have been promoting the self-organization of water systems by local communities. The book provides a critical exploration of these different institutional options, including the interaction between the public and private sectors, and the irreplaceable role of public funding as a condition for success. The book is divided into two parts: the first reviews theoretical and conceptual issues such as the political economy of water services, financing, the interfaces between water and sanitation services and public health, and the systemic conditions that influence the provision of these services, including the diversity of organizational and institutional options characterizing the governance and management of water and sanitation services. The second section presents a number of country or regional case studies, each one chosen to highlight a particular problem, approach or strategy. These case studies are drawn from Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe, covering a wide range of socio-economic and political contexts. The book will be of great interest to advanced students, researchers, professionals and NGOs in many disciplines, including public policy and planning, environmental sciences, environmental sociology, history of technology, civil and environmental engineering, public health and development studies.

Book Wastewater Treatment Plant Dynamics and Management in Constructed and Natural Wetlands

Download or read book Wastewater Treatment Plant Dynamics and Management in Constructed and Natural Wetlands written by Jan Vymazal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-04-22 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At present, constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment are a widely used technology for treatment of various types of wastewaters. The International Water Association (then International Association on Water Pollution Research and Control) recognized wetlands as useful tools for wastewater treatment and est- lished the series of biennial conferences on the use of wetland systems for water pollution control in 1988. In about 1993, we decided to organize a workshop on nutrient cycling in natural and constructed wetlands with the major idea to bring together researchers working on constructed and also natural wetlands. It was not our intention to compete with IWA conferences, but the workshop should rather complement the series on treatment wetlands by IWA. We believed that the exchange of information obtained from natural and constructed wetlands would be beneficial for all participants. And the time showed that we were correct. The first workshop took place in 1995 at T?ebo? in South Bohemia and most of the papers dealt with constructed wetlands. Over the years we extended the topics on natural wetlands (such as role of wetlands in the landscape or wetland restoration and creation) and during the 6th workshop held at T?ebo? from May 30 to June 3, 2006, nearly half of 38 papers presented during the workshop dealt with natural wetlands. This workshop was attended by 39 participants from 19 countries from Europe, Asia, North and South Americas and Australia. The volume contains 29 peer-reviewed papers out of 38 papers which were presented during the workshop.
