Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An alcoholic on awakening is much like a newborn baby—fragile and without any defense against a very sober world. September Remember begins with a terrifying—and darkly funny blackout—the sort of a blackout that pulls you right into the mind of a drunk on the loose. Reading it, I was reminded of my AA friend picking me up in his truck, the uncertainty of that boozy hazy evening. The blackout is not the story of September Remember, but it’s that darkness that will suck you into this story. When published, September Remember was a best seller, and the first known novel that put AA into literary consciousness. It’s been out of print now for over 60 years. The book is full of language and prejudices that are reflective of its time. That was the time of America between the two world wars: more than twenty years before Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, years before women made it out of the kitchen into the living room, and years before new immigrants were only recognizable by the derogatory terms used to describe them. In that way, September Remember can be treated as a historical document that mentions Alcoholics Anonymous, but it is much more than that: its mythology is essentially AA’s, a story of rebirth and redemption.

In this carefully crafted volume, Michael Kort describes the wartime circumstances and thinking that form the context for the decision to use these weapons, surveys the major debates related to that decision, and provides a comprehensive collection of key primary source documents that illuminate the behavior of the United States and Japan during the closing days of World War II. Kort opens with a summary of the debate over Hiroshima as it has evolved since 1945. He then provides a historical overview of thye events in question, beginning with the decision and program to build the atomic bomb. Detailing the sequence of events leading to Japan's surrender, he revisits the decisive battles of the Pacific War and the motivations of American and Japanese leaders. Finally, Kort examines ten key issues in the discussion of Hiroshima and guides readers to relevant primary source documents, scholarly books, and articles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before 1947, when Marjory Stoneman Douglas named The Everglades a "river of grass," most people considered the area worthless. She brought the world's attention to the need to preserve The Everglades. In the Afterword, Michael Grunwald tells us what has happened to them since then. Grunwald points out that in 1947 the government was in the midst of establishing the Everglades National Park and turning loose the Army Corps of Engineers to control floods--both of which seemed like saviors for the Glades. But neither turned out to be the answer. Working from the research he did for his book, The Swamp, Grunwald offers an account of what went wrong and the many attempts to fix it, beginning with Save Our Everglades, which Douglas declared was "not nearly enough." Grunwald then lays out the intricacies (and inanities) of the more recent and ongoing CERP, the hugely expensive Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan.

Though a member of The Church, Antonio finds himself at odd when he must confront his past and is forced to face the one thing he never did: give himself completely to God. By doing so, he realizes the theme behind the Gospel according to John: the road to Heaven is black and white; everything you do, say, think and feel will either take you closer to Heaven or take you closer to Hell... but ultimately, it’s your decision. “Anakim of the Sun: Being Human” was originally published under Author House in 2004 as “the Anakim”, but the story and ownership of the manuscript and characters still belong solely to Dan Gonzalez and were originally finalized in the year 2000 after eight years of story and character development.

After so many unsubstantiated claims and unconfirmed rumors, we now know what happened in the last hours of the life of “the smiling pope.” Finally, here is an accurate account, backed by in-depth research and previously unpublished documentation, revealed by Stefania Falasca, the vice-postulator for John Paul I’s cause of canonization, in The September Pope: The Final Days of John Paul I. This compelling story — completely anchored in the facts, including medical reports, first-person testimonies, and archival investigations — is clear and accessible, and exposes the truth about the seemingly inexhaustible rumors that sprang up around this supposed Vatican secret.

Download or read book Insane Devotion written by Mihaela Moscaliuc and published by Trinity University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-16 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gerald Stern has been a significant presence and an impassioned and idiosyncratic voice in twentieth and twenty-first-century American poetry. Insane Devotion is a retrospective of his career and features fourteen writers, critics, and poets examining the themes, stylistic traits, and craft of a poet who has shaped and inspired American verse for generations. The essays and interviews in Insane Devotion paint a broad picture of a man made whole by the influence of the written word. They touch on the contentious and nuanced stance of Judaism in the breadth of Stern’s work and explore Stern’s capacious memory and his use of personal history to illuminate our common humanity. What is revealed is a poet of complexity and heart, often tender, often outraged. As Philip Levine writes in his lyrical foreword to the volume, Stern is both sweet and spiky, “a born teacher who can teach me to see the universe in an acorn and hear the music of the lost in an empty Pepsi can.”
