Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sentinels (Farewell Bakassi: Selected Poems and Articles), denotes and connotes knowledge, powered by fervent passions, a lodestone of ideas, ideals and values. It is a confectionary of treasured experiences, going down memory lanes; replete with bitter -sweet recollections; of retrievable and irretrievable losses; delightful, regrettable and treasurable. It is an enriching historical, mythological, mythical analogy -a collection of time-tested tributes, deserving of recall. Sentinels is a chain of past, present and future, powered by fervent research; a passionate narrative. It is an inspirational, coordinated labour of love. I do recommend it highly for all who cherish the power of ideas, values and ideals. Far more than three quarters of Sentinels are made of such very passion-inflamed poems. A few of such emblematic collections can be sampled, here, as foretastes to numerous enticing, appetizing captions. Among these are: "Farewell Bakassi", "The Homestead (To our lost Bakassi)", "The Scars we see (For our Bakassi People)"; all bemoan the Nigeria's reckless loss of the Bakassi Peninsula to the Republic of Cameroons, vis-a-vis the plight of beloved Nigerians, so marooned in a strange Republic, and the human pains and tribulations thereof! In similar veins, and perhaps much more so, Sentinels is a collection of a variety of ice-creamy stuffs or tastes that the lickers would relish long, after every lick, bite, in bits and pieces, all very emblematic of Duke's intimate, vicarious attachments to his families, his beloved state, country and political party, the PDP; some are tributes to his admirers and admirees, friends and iconic personalities and others are patriotic lamentations of traumatic events, avoidable and unavoidable.

Book America s Space Sentinels

Download or read book America s Space Sentinels written by Jeffrey Richelson and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During much of the Cold War, America's first line of defense was in outer space: a network of secret satellites that could provide instant warning of an enemy missile launch. The presence of these infrared sensors orbiting 22,000 miles above the earth discouraged a Soviet first strike and stabilized international relations between the superpowers, and they now play a crucial role in monitoring the missile programs of China, India, and other emerging nuclear powers. Jeffrey Richelson has written the first comprehensive history of this vital program, tracing its evolution from the late 1950s to the present. He puts Defense Support Program operations in the context of world events - from Russian missile programs to the Gulf War - and explains how DSP's infrared sensors are used to detect meteorites, monitor forest fires, and even gather industrial intelligence by "seeing" the lights of steel mills.

Book excerpt: Artillery played an important and perhaps decisive role at the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg. Although many hundreds of books have been published on the battle, few have focused on the artillery. Silent Sentinels fills this flaring gap in the literature. This well-written and illustrated study was designed for both the casual battlefield visitor and the serious scholar. The former will use Silent Sentinels to tour the battlefield, browse existing guns, ponder the many photographs, and learn more about artillery in general; the latter will find the extensive primary sources, diagrams, appendices of numbers and losses, and informative discussion of organization and tactics an indispensable reference resource. Silent Sentinels discusses in detail every gun-type used at Gettysburg, the equipment needed to operate the guns, their organization, and the tactics employed by both Union and Confederate artillery men. In addition to a history of the artillery and how it was used, the author includes chapters on the park’s collection of 436 guns, the pieces on display at the field today, how to identify the different types of cannon, and how to identify the date and place of manufacture. Silent Sentinels concludes with a driving tour of the battlefield, specially designed with the artillery in mind. This lovely historical guide, complete with detailed endnotes and bibliography, will be a welcomed addition to the growing Gettysburg titles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: West Rock and East Rock are bold and beautiful features around New Haven, Connecticut. They resemble monumental gateways (or time-tried sentinels) and represent a moment in geologic time when the North American and African continents began to separate and volcanism affected much of Connecticut. The rocks attracted the attention of poets, painters, and naturalists when beliefs rose about the spiritual dimensions of nature in the early 19th century. More than two dozen artists, including Frederick Church, George Durrie, and John Weir, captured their magic and produced an assortment of classic American landscapes. In the same period, the science of geology evolved rapidly, triggered by the controversy between proponents and opponents of biblical explanations for the origin of rocks. Lavishly illustrated, featuring over sixty paintings and prints, this book is a perfect introduction to understanding the relationship of geology and art. It will delight those who appreciate landscape painting, and anyone who has seen the grandeur of East and West Rock.

Refusing to leave until the President of the United States agreed to support the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, thereby granting women the right to vote, these women endured torrential rains, freezing temperatures, and repeated attacks by mobs of angry men. When the government began arresting the suffragists en masse - forcing them into filthy cells and feeding them rotten food - the women went on hunger strike, refusing to eat until the charges against them were dropped. Their courage and determination in the face of horrendous government repression gained national attention and helped to change the nation forever.

Book excerpt: They say the country of Zeuten no longer has any need for heroes. Quests have been completed, the great Powers have withdrawn from the world, and the Sentinels who guard the last Relics are largely forgotten. Unlike their neighbours in the country of Aestin, whose Invokers wield the magic of the deities in exchange for glory and prestige, they leave the gods alone, and the gods extend the same courtesy to them. When Zeuten's last Sentinel disappears, Zelle, her granddaughter, intends to track her down. Instead she runs into an Aestinian stranger with no memories of his past, who claims to be looking for a long-lost Relic hidden in the mountains by the first Sentinels. To Zelle, the rumours of lost Relics are just stories told to trick gullible travellers, but the hordes of enemies on the stranger's tail suggest otherwise. Armed with nothing but her grandmother's sentient (and temperamental) magical staff, Zelle finds herself tasked with keeping them both alive. Between monstrous beasts, magical storms, and an enthusiastic but inept aspiring assassin and her dragon sidekick, Zelle has her work cut out if she wants to survive long enough to save her grandmother and prevent the destruction of a nation. Maybe Zeuten is in need of a few heroes after all… Keywords: fantasy adventure, magic, epic fantasy, dragons, quest, sword and sorcery, coming of age fantasy
